I remember walking through the ranges in my bright orange buffalo camo, two kea saw me from a mile away and came to see what’s up (must like orange). Anyway, I flipped some big rocks for them to have a peck around and kept walking. They followed me up a mountain and stopped with me up the top. As I sat resting, one of them (within arms reach) looks at me and I look at them. The kea then picked up a small rock with its beak and threw it to the side, continuing to stare at me and waiting. That cheeky bugger!
Thank you! A video on some of those guys will likely be coming the week after this one, as I think more people will likely vote for an extinct bird rather than an extant one. :)
Incredible bird, very smart. So Kea fashioned themselves some sheep fat, from time to time. I din't know that. Naughty naughty. Kea cookiecutter, like that little shark, the pirate - cookiecutter ;-)
Very interesting video although you are concentration on New Zealand birds when it comes to intelligent birds it would interesting to contrast New Zealand's Kea with Falkland Island's Johnny Rook, Striated caracara and the Australian Magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen, Eurasian Magpie, Pica pica, South American Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco, the Noth American Common Raven, as well as the Congo African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus and the Timneth Grey Parrot, Psittacus timneh.
Citation needed. Overall it’s beneficial for kea. Kea are susceptible to 1080 where they re habituated with human presence and food. Breeding success increases with 1080. I’ve seen no research showing impact on fungi. In fact fungi species break down 1080. 1080 wasn’t used on the islands with kakapo. So either your misinformed or purposely lying. I’m not sure which.

Martin Harris I stand by my comment. I’m not sure where I said 1080 has never been used. It wasn’t used with kakapo on the island. Given the curiosity of parrots and the extreme protection they are under we would never allow even one to die. Perhaps you need to do some more research on 1080 and it’s benefits. I suggest reading the reassessment document from the NZ EPA. There is also a large body of work in google scholar freely available. Unless you’re one of the deniers. Who refuse to read it, then so be it Also the full body of research work on 1080 shows the benefits outweigh the risks. Except of course there are individual species considerations that need to be made. Namely kea. Who are more likely to eat it and more likely to eat it when habituated with humans. But even then the benefits for kea are increased breeding success. NZ has used poison drops on multiple islands and reestablished wildlife. I see no issue with that. Show me the science that proves me wrong on 1080 and I’ll read it. The fungal disease is likely made more worse due to the lack of genetic diversity. Links to 1080 are bogus. Antis will claim it kills everything. Yet you provide evidence of breeding success or studies showing no impact on invertebrates and you get called a liar or shill. Go figure.
Pretty much! This is an older video, so I didn't get into too much depth, but they are such fascinating birds that I should honestly redo this one, but I'll have to see on that.

He wanted you to flip more big rocks for them :
A few Kea tore up the top of a jeep when we were driving through Fjordland. They were very naughty. I was stunned how curious they were
They can certainly be very crafty! It’s incredible how witty and intelligent they can be.
I hope this was worth the wait, sorry for being gone for nearly a month!
I love them so much. I hope we can save them.
We're killing them with 1080. They will soon be extinct.
Martin Harris please stop the pseudoscience lies. Overall 1080 still benefit breeding success.
@@Hamwcam Give me some figures and stats Hamish. It's Ok to make that claim but it's better to back it up with some ammunition!
Cheers, Martin
Martin Harris you’re the one that claimed we are killing them. And other than the rare event of deaths. That’s not the case

This was awesome mate! Well done! Looking forward to the recently extinct New Zealand species!

I know it's cruel but to think of parrots killing sheeps, I just laughed XD
The Kea is like the carrion crow of New Zealand.
love them too; they are freakishly clever
Not even teammates in COD modern warfare could demonstrate such partnership smh
lol

Don't worry, I didn't copy anything from Ben g Thomas in the slightest, this was all planned out weeks in advance :)

Wing-High, Gooftah!
Just great.
The poison 1080 not only kills Kea, it affects fungi in the soil and specifically the fungi causing deaths and injuries in Kakapo on Codfish Island.
1080 does far more good than harm though.
There is no better options for pest control.
