- Can you grow strawberries in a hydroponic system?
Yes! They are growing like weeds! I guess this is a good thing...seriously though, I found a neat way to propagate strawberries easily in a hydroponic system. I have a NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system in my basement where I grow vegetables and now strawberries. This setup seems to work great so far. I plan to post a follow-up video once these get further along. I may even use this method to grow starters for planting outside in the spring.
My kids are going to be so excited to pick all these strawberries, which will be good because I am probably going to need a lot of help!

I have some runners and it seems like a lot of people have problems with strawberries; MB sells a strawberry NPK 9-12-34 but it says mix in 100 gallons;
I’m new at hydroponics with strawberries……. What NPK do you use for smaller strawberry plants, per gallon ? I also made some liquid calcium; how much would you add ?
Tried strawberries...got more leaves than berries. I had to scratch the experiment too soon and never got back to it. Try tweaking your nutrients if your not getting enough berries. I need to get back to strawberries soon. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks, the ph matters a lot. I will post a followup video soon, starting to get lots of berries and I now have about 35 plants... all from just 4. I was having trouble until I got my PH down to the 5.5-6 range. I will keep an eye on nutrients, but using same blend I have always used for everything else and it seems to be ok so far.
If you don't mind me asking, where do you get the top that you use for the plants? More specifically the form pieces.
Do you cut those from something or purchase them as they are?

Trying to find a way to do this with reusable media (i.e. not Rockwool; maybe clay pebbles) or none at all (only pucks)... Did you try any of that? I noticed you went without media for the mother plant, so I'm curious 'bout the runners. Thanks for the great explanation!
I didn't try another medium, but I am sure they would work fine. You will need something though, I tried just net pots and the runners did not establish. The mature plants I bought were grown in sand, I washed off the roots and put in net pots, no rockwool, and they are doing awesome. Good luck!
Hello. I'm new to all of this, I want to do this outdoors. Was wondering a few things. #1 I assume my irrigation water outlet will be better than tap water from my house. #2 is water temperature that big of an issue? I bought black PVC pipe with my mind thinking the dark pipe will attract more light (I'm in evanston wyoming 50 miles from utah) I just dont want it to ruin my plants. Should I use the white PVC and not the black ABS pipe? #3 when it comes time to call it a season how can I keep these guys alive thru the winter so I can start them up again during the spring? Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you and be safe
I would think your irrigation water would be fine if it doesn't have chemicals in it. Just test the pH and get it in line with the plants you are trying to grow. I have noticed the strawberries are much more sensitive to pH than lettuce. If you are outdoors, I would think that black pipes would be a bad idea just because you don't want the water to get to over 80 degrees F in your hydroponic system. Regarding keeping them alive through winter, I would recommend having a setup like mine in a basement or some other space safe from winter temperatures. The plants are easy to move in a NFT system, just pull them out of the PVC pipe and move them indoors. I would think you would want to have a matching system indoors to the one you have outdoors (or move the system inside if possible), just because of the way the roots grow and adapt to whatever system you are using. I am no expert, but have learned a lot through trial and error :)

Thanks for sharing. Can you share what fertilizer concentration per gallon and NPK that worked best for the strawberries. Also, I transplanted a few plants grown in soil from my garden to the hydroponic and now the leaves are turning purple, have you had this issue?
Using a three part fertilizer I put in about 450 milliliters (almost 16 oz) per 40-50 gallons of water. I also then add 2 oz of PH down for my water (I have very hard well water). If you are sure the leaves don't have a fungus (purple spots), I think you could be experiencing leaf scorch. IE, make sure you don't have the light too close to the plants, and keep your day/night cycles to 12/12 or 14/8 to see if that helps. Hope that helps! Thanks!
@@driftlessinwi Thank you for info. My lights are too strong indeed. Also, when I transplanted my plants (absolutely healthy) I noticed some roots were brown from the soil and not root rot. I now use beneficial bacillus in my water anyway to suppress any potential root rot Bactria there. Side note, researching the literature about strawberry nutrients, it appears they need far more NPK than what the general hydroponics nutrients provide. Some nutrients sold for Strawberry are 10-24-32 npk. Which makes me wonder if you could get even better results with that. Thanks Again.
Thanks for the tip. I am thinking about trying another nutrient solution. They do decently well now and I am getting a quart of strawberries every 2-3 days. Now if only I could get rid of spider mites once and for all! :)
@@driftlessinwi for spider mites and other mites I use Neem oil. I tested it in my garden but not in hydroponics though.

Should have an updated video this week... about 35 plants now from 4. Several of the propagated plants have berries and the original 4 plants have a lot of berries starting. PH is key
