  • Join me in some easy to do mindful hand embroidery suitable for beginners and advanced embroiderers and make a beautiful landscape inspired by a photograph or from your own imagination. These are easy to do and lots of fun; I used a recent trip to the Norwegian Fjords for my inspiration but you can adapt this technique to any image you like, a holiday memory or a place you would like to go!
I show you where to get fabrics from, how to choose them, how to layer your landscape and how to work the stitching.

After loving hours and hours of your videos and finally getting back to embroidery at the age of 77, this landscape slow stitching one has really spoken to me. I’m someone who has to touch fabric or just stare at it. I’ve just been in my closet looking at things I know I will never wear again and are too out of style to donate. Pieces of them will now come alive in a landscape!

Nice video. To anyone who doesn't have much of a selection of embroidery threads I thought I'd share my tip. My local thrift had a bin of old embroidery kits for 25 and 50 cents each but nothing that looked cute to actually stitch. I bought ten of them and when I got home I took out all the thread and tossed the rest and it gave me a big bowl of thread with nice variety. A few did have some nice fabrics also and I just turn them over and do my designs on the back.

Hi my name is Janet November and I live in Pennsylvania. I am 68 years old and my Mother taught me to embroider when I was 12 years old. I got away from it for a while but I am back at it and loving every moment. This video is a true inspiration. Your work is beautiful. Thank you for sharing all of this with us here on TH-cam. My 2 youngest granddaughters 8 - 9 have started to embroider and I am thrilled.

Looking for unworn/old clothes in the wardrobe/closet is a great free resource. I've managed to find lots from the charity shops. I personally only buy adult clothes as I feel I'm depriving a family if I buy children's clothes especially in this cost of living crisis.

I've had an idea for a landscape piece from a favorite photo and I've attempted to start it. But it just wasn't coming together right. I think a slow stitch method (if you can call it that) is the answer.

I went to a museum about an hour away from me that had embroidery and sampler pieces from the 1700's and later. Only one piece was from the U.S; the rest were from Europe. There was a gold work piece there that was beautiful. I took lots of pictures. The curator said the museum considers the collection their most prized possession. It is a smaller museum. The landscapes you did are pretty.

Thank you Sarah, really enjoyed this video and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday. I do hope ginger cat was speaking to you when you returned or are you still in the dog house so to speak. You have had me looking in charity shops the past few weeks with a different focus and I have picked up quite a few bits and bobs lately . There is something satisfying about deconstructing small garments like ties and the satisfaction of finding small pieces of interesting material. I am on leave from work the next 2 weeks and I intend to slow stitch for some of this time so this video was timed beautifully.

Hi Sarah, it's lovely to see a new video from you after your well deserved break. I'm in the middle of a piece of goldwork with beads and cabochons for a deadline next week (!), so it was great to rest my eyes for a while and enjoy your slow stitching. I think a bit of sorting through old holiday photos, fabrics and threads sounds like a real treat for my next project. Regarding finding odds and ends of fabric if you don't have a stash, I have bought several sample fabric books from a local store that makes curtains and upholstery - they are really glad to get rid of them for a few pounds and I've had some gorgeous fabrics in them.

Thank you Sarah, glad you both had a nice holiday, sounds like a very inspiring trip, and just love the two lovely landscapes, I've always wanted to see how this kind of thing is done, and once again am in awe and envy of your buttons, beads and trimmings stash - divine little sheep and moose!!. Usually it seems I am the sort of person who to try and 'let go and relax' to stitch something actually causes me to get very stressed instead!, it must be that lack of planning that you've mentioned previously yourself, however having recently worked on the background scene to 'Gerald' the bear, I did find it was extremely liberating to not have a clue how to put something together and just throw stuff at it instead, so your excellent influence and teaching is very much rubbing off, thank you
