- The year: 1982 at the most prestigious surfing event on Earth, The Banzaii Pipeline Masters on the North Shore of Hawaii. Every year this iconic contest makes lifetime memories, creates heroes, and takes casualties, as this playing field is one of the most dangerous in the surfing world.
What made the 1982 event one of the most classic and still talked about today,? Two legendary moments: Micheal Ho's dynamic performance and victory, surfing with a cast on a broken wrist, and a young, scared 17-year-old Martin "Pottz" Potter's perfect 10 on a second reef bomb.

The Best classic surfers !!🏄♂️🦈😎
I remember sitting on the beach at Pipe and watching Michael Ho tear apart back door with a broken wrist in a cast.. one of my greatest memories..
I was probably still in the womb at this pipemasters
I learned to surf just a little after this contest. Michael Ho’s backside railgrab stance got me into my first waves
Epic. One of the greatest surf contest victories of all time.
Hans, Willy.. cast of legendary characters sprinkled throughout 👌
My first winter on the NS. Was epic seeing this live for the first time. Was a honor later on making Mikes Boards at Lost and Brets !! ❤🤙🏼
Ho called that backside barrel 10 feet, here in Cali that’s triple overhead 🤙🏼
Wow mark richards was incredible
why? what did he do in this comp which was outstanding?
6:36 i would say this opening ride in his section is enough to convince me makes the drop stays in the pocket during the right time and cuts out without getting hit by the lip. And he was a shaper as well lets not discount that his boards are still on the used market i was surprised he could surf too
@@travisguide4516 he is supposed to be surfing INSIDE the tube, similar to Michael Ho and Hans Hedemann. Back then, they scored 10 rides and Mark's strategy was to not fall of & catch a lot of waves. He was a weak tuber rider compared to his generation. What is incredible is the wave at 7:21. This is obviously a perfect 10 point ride.
You should do a episode about the hawaiian surfers in the 70s. Like Eddie aikau surfing big waves in waimea bay, buddy boy kaohi with dick brewer in the shortboard revolution, the aipa team riders, gerry lopez and more
Great idea!!
Its hard to get good footy before the 80s ive always wanted to see something in 82 what a treat
👍🍺
Soundtrack. That first song? Killer surf punk sound. Anyone?
Yeah Man: Another Dream "Forever in Darkness" 1982
Nice look🏄♀️..

YES!! We need some of those P.T. Wave Watch shows!! Loved those.
Looked like 3 ft
Pottz.... Not a decent person.
Mo Ho.... One of the best and THEEE BEST I've ever seen free surfing at Sunset. It's like nobody is out when there's 500 guys..... Riding from behind the peak to Val's and never fell once in two and a half hours. He is THEEE BEST.
Why is Pottz “not a decent person “?
@HLsab
Surfed with him several times.... Easiest answer: He doesn't act like many of the other professionals in the water like Brad Gerlach, Christian Fletcher, Brock Little (rip), Ronnie Burns (rip), Barton Lynch (SUPER nice), and many more.... barking at amateurs over waves that aren't even good. He was top 16. He could get the best wave of the set on a 6' day at Rocky "community hole" Point.... but is barking about 3 footers to guys that had no clue.
boy have i been the boy barked at before it sucks
with a cast..insane!!!
Potter nose must have been red raw
