I'm just impressed that in 1982 surfing was mainstream enough to have Al MIchaels commentating, even if it was just a highlight show.

Micheals style looks exactly like his son Mason. What a trip

Been surfing since 1962, still have my Wardy 9'6" with scars from South Beach Pier, Haulover Pier and Canaveral Pier. Surfed two 'canes.

This brings back memories. I was out in the water (and on land) filming this day. Got this footage in my film Totally Committed - which Michael certainly was this day!

Hey there Michael, say- how’d ya hurt your hand?
“.....oh, well, uh, ya see, a coupla days ago uncle Eddie and I were kicking the shit outta some haole up at Off The Wall for gettin outta line and uh....OH, uh, I mean I was at a friend’s house and put too much weight on it and uh, cracked...yup...hurt too...😬😶🤙”
But seriously- cool video. As a lifelong surfer I enjoy watching stuff like this. It was before my time, but as most surfers know, the 70’s and 80’s (and even thru the early 00’s with AI/BI/Volcom/Kaiborg etc all running around) were the salad days on the North Shore, for many.
Heavy waves, heavy dudes, Heavy substances, and even heavier egos makes for some interesting stories through the years.

mark richards was sabotaging competition and for good, most epic "competition" ever with ho doing a disable payback time, and shaun thomson as our worst sell out persona all desperate and lost getting instant karma. 1987 north shore movie's final seems like a reenactment of this day with the three characters with the underestimated, the sell out and the self-disenfranchised

Michael got into a fight in a bar the night before--that's how he broke his wrist.

How far surfboards have come from them days, they all look awkward and trying to control a barge, compared to the evolution n technology surfboards have come. And don't think for a second I'm talking about the surfers, I'm NOT!!! they are are legends of surfing, it's just the purely the tech of boards and how much more advanced they are these days, and it's like comparing theses 70s 80s boards to the 50s 60s

Boards sure have changed for the better. I got my first board as a ten year old in 1970, a 6 foot 3 inch single fin. Unbelievably slow.

MIchael Ho's style holding up even today. Mark Richards' style on the other hand is absolutely hideous.

Just out of curiosity, what are the biggest waves you've surfed???
