  • Kemi Badenoch accused a Labour MP of being a “liar” in a heated clash over the language used to describe transgender children.
    The equalities minister was warned about the use of “unparliamentary language” after she clashed with Kate Osborne, who she accused of lying.
    During an appearance at the Women and Equalities Select Committee on Wednesday (13 December), the Cabinet minister became angry when Ms Osborne accused her of previously using “inflammatory language that likens children and young people coming out as trans to the spread of a disease”.
    Ms Badenoch said: “That is a lie and I think you should withdraw that statement. That is a lie. You are lying.”

    Why didn’t the chair ask the Lab MP to corroborate her statement instead of going on about the type of language used?

      Probably because the chair just doesn't want to get into it, and I can't blame her. Kemi probably shouldn't have used the word "liar", but she was absolutely right to demand the MP cite her sources.

      Badenoch referred to it as an epidemic. Epidemic is a word used to describe a disease. While she could argue it was used as a metaphor- such as in 'epidemic of locusts', it is clearly language which is calculated to be derogatory and dog whistling. And it worked- look at all the far right barking going on in response to this video.

      She was within her rights and she was accurate that it was a false statement and a lie. But it's probably not wise as it's personal. Better to call it a false statement, if there are too many of them. Ask that the get sources for all statements and reconvene a later date.

  • @grumpyoldman-uk
    @grumpyoldman-uk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    Kemi actually used the word epidemic. The thick labour MP though that referred to disease. Dictionary meaning is "an outbreak or product of sudden rapid spread, growth, or development". The use of the word is often associated with the spread of a disease, but that is not its actual true meaning. Eg there can be an epidemic of knife crime.

    • @billydeeuk
      @billydeeuk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not defending the Labour MP, who was clearly going for a “gotcha” moment and hadn’t even thought to bring the quote with her in case the Minister or even the Chair asked her to cite her sources - however “epidemic” does have negative connotations (even the example you used, an “epidemic of knife crime” is hardly a desired thing).
      There is a genuine point to be made as to why the Conservative government used language that is provocative at best, inflammatory at worst, to discuss the rising numbers of children identifying as transgender (particularly when Badenoch clearly has strong personal views on the matter), but that Labour MP chose to come at this not with the surgical, clinical approach a select committee SHOULD take (they exist, after all, to dig below the surface of govt policy) but rather making a nakedly party political point by quoting her out of context

    • @grumpyoldman-uk
      @grumpyoldman-uk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@billydeeuk What Kemi had actually referred to was there being an epidemic of schools telling gay children they are transgender. You are right - this was an attempt at a "gotcha" moment by the Labour MP and she came out of it very, very badly. Epidemic is indeed commonly regarded as a bad thing and associated with disease, but that is because the wider meaning has been hi jacked. For me the bigger issue here is that the government (somewhat late) have produced much needed guidance for schools on the back of the Cass Review which Labour are reining back on.

      @@gamerknownit’s an accurate word for the context, this is a social contagion disproportionally affecting kids with conditions such as autism and anorexia. If you think children being given puberty blockers (which commonly cause tumours), hormones and cutting off healthy parts of their bodies (leading to sterilisation and lifelong complications from the surgery) when the evidence shows the majority, if given time, will grow past their gender dysphoria is a positive thing I respectfully suggest you need to re-examine your position. No one is saying trans people don’t exist or shouldn’t have rights and the absolute freedom to live how they choose but there are also valid concerns over child protection and women’s safety to be considered too. I’ve noticed the people who shout the loudest over being inclusive tend to be the ones trying to exclude everyone else.

    What the hell is going on here ? Badendoch used the word epidemic correctly !
    These are the definitions of the word “ epidemic “
    1. An outbreak of a contagious disease that spreads rapidly and widely.
    2. A rapid spread, growth, or development:
    Notice the second definition fits precisely with what Badendoc is saying and is not strictly relevant to a disease . You can have an epidemic of bad ideas .
    If autistic girls and gay children who previously grew up with autism in the same sex at birth continued on life identifying with their sex , suddenly started to identify other than their birth sex , then that explosion could be likened to an epidemic .
    There has been something like a 4000% increase in young people being referred for trans related care .
    That’s an explosion akin to an epidemic similar to definition two .
    The minister is therefore actually lying .

    • @hughwilliams5995
      @hughwilliams5995 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The second meaning is a metaphorical one. The original meaning is the first. The metaphorical purpose here is to describe something both growing exponentially and very bad- like a disease epidemic. As for 'the minister lying'- I think you haven't understood select committees (either).

Ms Badenoch (I'm not on first name terms) has made it her stock in trade to attack what she sees as a 'Woke Identity Culture' in which Trans people appear to have a special place both on the right and the left. Her words have been carefully abusive and ad hominem in style and she uses her intelligence to ensure that the maximum number of her canine followers respond violently to her whistle. Invoking disease is an excellent ploy for her just as invoking 'invasion' is good for her campaign to pull the ladder up on immigration. @@spalding1968

      The "epidemic" (not disease) she referred to was an epidemic of people telling "young gay children" that they are trans, and telling them that they should go on hormones etc. The use of the (daft) term "epidemic" was an allegation about the rise in TELLING kids this, not a rise in the number of gay or trans kids themselves. I'm not sure if she ever backs up this claim with data, either in parliament or in committee, but if we're going to attack her for saying a dumb thing, we have to attack her for the dumb thing she actually said. Here's the actual parliamentary session:

    I love the way they use the phrase, "Unparliamentary language" or behaviours when even in Parliament they behave like rowdy children in a playground and resort to name calling all the time. The phrase Unparliamentary language or behaviours would imply that there is a high standard that one should hold themselves too, but many rarely do. The chair was more focused on this said language than the fact it seemed and by all accounts appears to be a baseless slur on Ms Badenoch's name.

    • @LucyOLastic
      @LucyOLastic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Who is "promoting"? The point here is plain. claiming there is an "epidemic of gay children being encouraged to change gender" is likening it to an outbreak of disease. No one said she used that word "disease" but her statement works adequately to imply it. It's as crass as calling the mass migration of boat people an "invasion." She needs to tone down her language. It's an overstatement at best.

    OK, how about using the word SLANDER. You cannot make untrue statements about what someone has said, when they did not, and not be accountable. This is a fashion that is illegal in law and should not be seen especially in a parliamentary committee where it may be recorded as fact. Badenoch was correct to forcefully challenge what is a slander. This woman put that out as evidence as a direct quote. Show us the evidence that the quote is true. We see too much of this in society today.

  • @onlylexus

    The word 'disease' does not mean exactly the same as 'epidemic' they are not entirely consistent with one another and NOT interchangeable in their use. Epidemic can mean widespread in the sense that anything at all can be widespread, that meaning may not include the widespread of a disease and that should be known by the ignorance of Kate Osborne and her poor accusation. I agree with Badenoch in the sense that she may consider the spread of the Trans ideology and its terrible fall out on society may be an "epidemic". What is wrong with that? Osborne is ignorant!
