- We visit the famous DoBell Ranch southeast of Holbrook, Arizona (just outside of the Petrified Forest National Park) to collect stunning pieces of petrified wood, including the much sought-after "rainbow" petrified wood. The DoBell Ranch is one of the oldest rockhounding dig sites in the USA, having been opened in 1936 by Francis DoBell. DoBell Ranch, which is located adjacent to the Petrified Forest National Park, provides a legal way to collect Arizona petrified wood for a small fee.

When using Muriatic Acid to clean your fossils, be sure to wear gloves and eye protection, and avoid breathing the fumes. Always add acid to water, and never add water to acid, and always do your cleaning OUTDOORS. To neutralize your acid bath, use generous amounts of baking soda (until the solution stops fizzing), and then allow at least a few more hours. Once neutralized, pour out the old solution, and then soak your fossils (petrified wood) in fresh water and allow to soak for a few more hours, overnight is best. Never clean fossils containing calcium in Muriatic Acid, as the strong acid will attack your fossil. Use weaker acids, such as Vinegar to clean calcium-based fossils (most fossils in limestone). Only use Muriatic Acid on silica-based fossils, since the Hydrochloric Acid cannot dissolve the silica.

So, your video was recorded in 2018, and it is now June 29, 2024. I called one of the Dobell family members about 4 months ago and asked several questions regarding the cost of material, camping, and the size of pieces one may collect.
He said you can take whatever size you can afford and fit in your vehicle. Good answer! I live in Tacoma, Washington, and plan to drive there, probably later this summer. Nice video, thanks. Don Wilson.
I live about 20 miles from there... we find petrified wood everywhere! Pretty awesome place to call home! I have the high desert and green forests with lakes and streams 20 minutes in opposite directions.
Well if you left and went south on 377 you went through Heber and then Payson towards Phoenix. Heber is where I grew up!
If I am back in the area I would love to drop by and do some more collecting! Leave the light on for me. :)

Thanks for the mention guys. I'm loving your videos. Beautiful color in that pw. The creek stain is what gives our pw it's color. I made the mistake of soaking some in CLR. It cleaned it great but there wasn't much color left after that. It is still beautiful though. Thanks again Randy.

Bought 2 250lb tree pcs there cheap. Rhonda is a very nice and sweet lady and will deal with you. The kids there will knock their self out helping you. Went 3 years ago and going back this summer after we dig fossil fish in Kemmerer Wyoming and Trilobites in Delta Utah.

i want to go there so bad. i creek hunt for arrowheads here in ne kansas and find small petty wood pieces often but very rare do i find colorfull pieces. thanks for your video!!
And deep down under the mud flood you'll find large pieces of the tree...
I have some land about 20 miles due south of the forest & posted a few similar pieces on reddit and was told they weren't actually petrified wood just agates and jasper.

That's beautiful stuff right there. I would love to get some of that. But I live as far as you can get in Eastern Canada.
Canada has some nice gems as well. Check over Caver461 here on TH-cam, great Canadian hunting locations.
And these pieces look like they're from cedar... And look at different size grains of sand you'll see that those are also petrified wood...and these are pieces of giant trees... You can see more in the dakotas... Only these are of a different type of tree found in the Dakota's...
The agetized wood is the best or the jasper wood.
What ratio of acid to water do you recommend for cleaning pieces up?
Petrified wood is almost always silica-based, so muriatic (HCL) works, but please be careful. Follow all label precautions.

For you all that want to visit The Petrified Forest park - Don't, I repeat don't even try tp pick any petwood up and hide it, to take with you// and think you got away with it, because you won't!!

Yes, thank you....please DO NOT collect illegally at the park. There are plenty of other locations where you can legally collect. Let's preserve this wonderful park and treasure for future generations to enjoy

Not sure why, but unlike Rhonda, I have never had much of an interest in Petrified wood or Fossils, but I am a rockhound nut for rocks and minerals - not sure why...
Trilobites and Petrified Wood have always been in my top favorite fossils. My interest in fossils stems from my upbringing in central coastal California. We had fossil shark's teeth in Santa Cruz and I loved sifting for them from a very young age which then led to more fossils and other types of rockhounding. Thanks for dropping by.
