The Disused Cwm ( Nant ) Prysor Viaduct on the former Bala & ffestiniog Railway
The structure consists of nine stone arches carrying a single bi-directional track over which passenger trains ran from 1882 to 1960, with freight trains lasting until 1961. The viaduct was the most substantial single structure on the line. It is sharply curved, necessitating the provision of a check rail in its active railway days.

Be fantastic to reopen this railway to bring the trains back to Bala. A Welsh "Settle & Carlisle" in waiting!

It's a stunning viaduct. You captured it beautifully.

Magnicent piece of railway architecture. Your video does it justice with some superb panoramic views, and evocative images. What a rail journey that must have been!

The correct name is Cwm Prysor the word Cwm means valley as does the word Nant one is used for a V shaped valley the other refers to a U shaped valley. The viaduct was situated on the Branch Line from Bala Junction (which was on the Llangollen Line Junction to Morfa Mawddach (built as Barmouth Junction) Main Line) and ran to Blaenau FFestiniog.
It is quite a sight when snow is on the ground, after the viaduct the line clings to a shelf for a long time on its way to Trawsfynydd where the old station building and goods shed survive. Good attempt at the pronunciation and a very good video.

What a beautiful viaduct, all lonely and lost out there! And to think that there must be so many more, too. Keep on exploring, Ant!

Great presentation, big thanks! I always dream that one day there will be a heritage line reopened, going from Blaenau Ffestiniog (where the Conwy valley existing line terminates, and the Porthmadog to BF heritage line terminates [caernarfon to Porthmadog has been reopened too!] to Trawsfynydd then over Cwm Prysor) to Bala. Bala in turn has a short lakeside heritage line, and potentially could reopen its old line eastwards from Bala to Corwen, where the Llangollen heritage line currently terminates.
As has already been said, Nant is the stream below, and Cwm is the small valley it runs through.
And I think the drop at the west end of the viaduct is subsidence.
    Thanks again. Cheers.

Great to see this viaduct again. The last time was from the road in my dad's car about 65 years ago and much has changed. There were no trees just empty moorland with the railway seeming miles from anywhere and completely exposed to the elements. Super video!

Hello Ant - greetings from Poland.
That was a fantastic video. Thanks so much for producing it. The camera work, drone footage and your commentary were brilliant. Being there in October, showed Snowdonia at her best in all those wonderful colours. Well done old friend - one of your best

I have a book with all the stations on that line , to think how popular the line would have been for tourisim, but we don't seem to be able to imagine that far! if it's loosing money close it, of course now where the line comes up out of Bala there is a massive lake covering the old line that ran through Llangollen down to Blanau Ffestiniog and beyond., on it's spectacul;ar route.

Deja vue here Ant, it was impressive the first time!!!!! Thanks for walking that, it still looks pretty much the same as it did in the late sixties - apart from the green trackbed!!!👍🏻👍🏻

  • @Scots_Diesel

a wee and possibly unique idea for your videos of viaducts in the future.
If you worked out roughly the height from the track bed to where the average humans head was, as they're sat in a train carriage, and angled the drone so it would look like the person's looking out the carriage window, then fly the drone along the viaduct, and edited it to look like line speed, you could create, for viewers what looks like the first rail journey across a viaduct in decades.
It would depend on height, crossing speed and position on the viaduct, but with your great skill as pilot and camera man I'm sure you could find a way to make a unique shot like that work, perhaps effics such as black and white, scratches on film post production whisps of steam.
    Just an idea.
    Cheers for the excellent content.

"Cwm" means valley, "Nant" means stream, Prysor being the name of the stream that runs in the valley, so I guess you can take your pick!
