I respect Chris as a movie critic so much because he can actually appreciate all the small details and elements of movies that modern day critics tend to overlook or disparage.
I honestly don't even care for RT anymore when Chris gives way better insight into films.

You do realise that Chris Stuckmann is a certified Rotten Tomatoes critic, right?

For as long as art criticism has existed there’s been a divide between what is considered “good” and what audiences enjoy. The two can meet happily, but what satisfies the masses often does so at the cost of originality, depth, and genuine quality. Critics are often called out for being out of touch with the general public by trashing popular films and praising independent features with a smaller audience. Every reviewer has their personal creed about how they rate a film and what their recommendations are based on, but as I see it they fall into some pretty common guidelines. Did I enjoy this film? Would someone else of a different age enjoy this film? Does this film have anything to offer beyond simple enjoyment? And does this film accomplish what it set out to?
Audience members however have a very different method of assessing the film and it is far less standardized. I know an unfortunate number of viewers who partially evaluate a film on its trailer, which the filmmakers have absolutely nothing to do with. Many of them assess a film based on their expectations and how well the film meets them, instead of how well the filmmakers meet their own goals. Typically a moviegoer will also incorrectly relate a film to the previous films of a star as though they had an influence on the storytelling beyond their own performance. But outside all of this there’s a large issue when it comes to general public evaluation of art: they are less intelligent and less educated than reviewers.
There are some key differences between Cinemascore, which appears to be growing in popularity in the last year, and imdb (or other online user sourced) ratings. Let’s pick something where we can drop a very wide net. Iron Man 3 is far and away the top grossing film of this year and it scored a certified fresh rating of 78% from Rotten Tomatoes from 271 reviews. When you look at who they classify as top critics that score drops to the barely positive 65% from 46 reviews. Cinemascore typically asks 400-500 theatre patrons to review a film and Iron Man 3 scored an A (A+ is the highest possible). From a much larger pool of 216,268 votes on imdb Iron Man 3 scored a 7.6/10, which is pretty close to its RT rating. Now, not only does imdb draw from a larger pool but it is not targeted at demographics. Cinemascore goes to about 15 locations for each film and targets audience members of broad ethnic groups, genders, and ages to guess which groups this movie hits and misses with. One of the biggest problems with both of these viewer rating formats however is that all of these people chose to see this film. Something about it appealed to them to the point that they decided to see it which inevitably raises the chances that they will enjoy it more than a reviewer who watches every major release.
When looking at The Smurfs 2 the 13% RT score appears to vastly clash with the A- Cinemascore, however in truth since the first film was rated about the same from critics and it should be no surprise that the viewers who enjoyed the first film (the only reason one would see this one) would enjoy the sequel. Planes was a direct to DVD film that gained enough traction that Disney decided to release it in theatres, earning 23% on RT and an A- CS. These families knew what they were buying. Their children were entertained for 90 minutes and walked away smiling, and that’s not what reviewers are paid to evaluate. Their job is to tell the adults with children, or adults who have no children, or teenagers who still enjoy animated films, or even the cinematically savvy pre-teen whether or not this film will be worth their time and money (not if it makes a good babysitter). Cinemascore is a marketing tool, and in my opinion a terribly flawed one, used to determine how word of mouth will spread about a film and how audiences of broad backgrounds are reacting to it on opening weekend.
Now on to Rotten Tomatoes, a useful and reprehensible tool in determining what films to see. It’s pretty easy to watch as the first few reviews roll in for a film to see critics sway in one direction or another. If you’re not a top critic you are risking your job by going against the grain on a film, and if you are a top critic you put your credibility on the line (as Roger Ebert often did) by praising something most hate. A bandwagon or groupthink mentality quickly forms particularly when turning on a film. Also there’s a good deal of resentment in the media toward big budget studio releases. When reading the reviews for some of the summer films this year (particularly The Lone Ranger) it seems critics revel in the failure of the filmmakers and the studio. Some even use obvious biblical allegory. And understandably it’s difficult to remain impartial when you see great films sidelined for mediocre ones year after year. But reviewers often fall prey to some similar issues as the common viewer. Far too many reviews for Elysium commented on how it fell short of expectations following District 9. Elysium is its own film and had it come before District 9 would it be a better film? Were they to expect nothing from this director or this film how many more positive reviews would it have? Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a kind of surprise you with a new unknown director effect that will undoubtedly lead to both Rupert Wyatt’s subsequent films and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to fail to live up to that surprise impact. It doesn’t mean they are less good, it just means they need to be viewed with an open mind. So, I’d recommend looking beyond the star rating, percent, grade, or what have you to actually read a review and judge for yourself what aspects of the film you are looking for and what is there. Attempt to walk into a film with an open mind and leave your expectations behind you.
Cinemascores rarely generate an F, which tells you right there that the general public is afraid to score a film too low. On imdb the scores are anonymous, impersonal, and takes one click to vote, and thus allows for the real hatred of a film to be let loose. Only eight films have earned an F, half of which were positive on RT. Many of these low ratings I blame on trailers misleading audiences. Solaris (2002) and Killing Them Softly were both liked by critics but hated by the 400-500 viewers in the midwest. Personally I enjoyed both of these films but feel the trailers show a completely different, action infused, high tension thriller that does not reflect the real film. Similarly Bug scored an F in spite of its “fresh” RT score, as viewers were led to believe this simple story based on a play was about killer microscopic genetically engineered parasitic insects when it was in truth about people suffering from schizophrenia. I believe had this film been given its proper audience instead of an advertising trick to get a strong opening weekend crowd it would have done better. As I’ve said before, do your research and don’t trust trailers.

Another problem with Cinemscore is they only surveyed the very first few bath of cinemagoers that went to see the movies and don't re-update their rating for subsequent watch (which is the majority of cinemagoers). It is to be expected that those that are most excited about the movie would be the one that rushed to see it in theatres and more likely to gave it more favourable scores.
The problem with IMDB rating on the other hand is it is rather useless when it comes to new releases ( especially high profile ones).Any "Fanboi "or "Hater" can easily set up multiple accounts and spam absurd ratings, even before the movie is released .
As for RT, I find most people don't even understand how its rating system worked.

Honestly, and this is gonna sound pretentious... It's too creative. People have gotten way too used to everything in hollywood being done a certain way and as soon as someone tries to step outside of that Avengers/Paranormal Activity zone they get bashed for it. I've just been noticing this concerning trend lately that people no longer appreciate original content. They only want the next sequel or reboot or remake. That's what makes money.

We need to support these unique films so we can get more of them. I'm tired of popcorn, generic american flicks. I'm ready for these kind of films. This movie was godawful.
And I don't mean "It was too weird for me" or "I didn't get it and it went over my head". I mean it tried a lot of things and it failed in a lot of them, objectively.
      Spoilers, obviously.
I think a really great example of what's wrong with this film is encapsulated in the ending. Specifically, where Lockhart runs (literally) into the car full of executives as he's escaping with Hannah. One of the first things they say to him, looking up at the fire, is "What have you done?" - what? What the fuck. That's not at all what someone would say in this situation. Not only would they not assume the fire up there was his fault - because there's absolutely no reason for them to believe that - they would have more pertinent questions, like "Are you okay? We just hit you with a car and you're bleeding and fleeing from a flaming castle." And then they ask about Pembroke, presumably because they assume he was staying in the castle that is now clearly burning down. Lockhart tells them "He's gone". No more explanation than that, which is stupid, there's a million things to explain, but whatever. They more or less accept this stupid response, and their response to this is to command him to get in the car. As though he would have any reason to *not* get in the fucking car. As though if they weren't just like "You're clearly injured, get in the car and we'll take you to a doctor, then we'll worry about sorting everything out" he would have any reason at all to refuse this completely rational suggestion. But he does refuse it, because now the executive is a badly written cartoon, and he demands that he get in the car, reminding him that he was sent here to perform a task, as though that has ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH HIM GETTING IN THE FUCKING CAR. But he's suddenly a shitty cartoon because now Lockhart can refuse him in what might be the most hamhandedly out of place instance of someone thinking "If he does this then it could seem meaningful, even if none of it makes sense" that I've ever seen in a movie. They filmmakers wanted him to have a chance to reject his corporate life, to have absolution, which the movie also hamhandedly shoved down the throats of the audience earlier. So they have to make his bosses - all of them, all at once - show up coincidentally as he's leaving so he could have this moment at the end of the movie.
And the movie is full of shit like this. Like the filmmakers had scraps of ideas of what could make a good movie, and they just crammed the story into these set pieces to express those ideas, even if they made no sense in regard to each other or even within the context of themselves.
I really hope people don't support this film. I have no idea what happened, here. Something, somewhere down the line went terribly, terribly wrong. I don't know if it's a case of one person going unchecked and running wild a la George Lucas or if it's more like there were too many cooks and too many ingredients all trying different stuff that the studio couldn't handle a la Suicide Squad. Either way, this was bullshit. This was a two and a half hour waste of time. Absolutely nothing of substance was said nor expressed. Nothing cohesive or consistent made it to the final product of this film. And it's a goddamned shame, because Dane DeHaan is better than this. He deserves better than this.

The majority of film critics are just terrible anymore. Stuckmann is an exception, I don't always agree with him, but many of the critics' reviews just don't make sense, they want something different, then they bash it. I'm looking forward to seeing this as I love weird, different films.

To be fair, just being original is no defense against things like "the movie has no plot" etc. Honestly, i don't get either side of the arguement. Why do you want something that hasn't been done before ? Do you innovate every day ? Does that make what you do less viable and important ? I want to be entertained, i want to be soaked into the world that is being depicted and i don't want to be taken out of the immersion every few minutes, if a movie can manage that, it's already above average for me. "But it was the first movie filmed entirely by a chimpanzee, they truly did something new there"; "Yeah ? Did that help the movie in any way ? No ? Then it probably was a dumb idea and i don't care, thank you !"

I haven't seen a cure for wellness, so I can't comment on that but I feel like Chris has this problem of saying "Oh, this movie is original and different so you have to go see it and I know a lot of people will hate it but I'm going to give it a high grade because it's original."
He's done this with a couple movies and every time I've walked away hating the movie. Just because something is different and original doesn't take away from whatever flaws it may have. Being an original concept doesn't give a film permission to just to off the rails, or be slow burning to the point of boredom, or be so trippy half the audience can't figure out what's going on without a two hour companion piece.
Yes, I want original films, but I also want them to be good, not just different.

I understand what you mean. I hope he genuinely liked the movie and is not affected by it being an "original" concept even though as a movie it might be complete shit. Then again, I think it's very good to reward people who are trying to make original films even though they might not be that great. If people don't give original films a chance the big studios will keep on pumping out Marvel films.

I'll admit I liked the movie, I didn't love it, but I liked it for what it was and respected it's originality as you did. I won't give any spoilers but I liked how it tried to veer off the road from a psychological thriller to what almost reminded me of an insane gothic romance kind of plot.. I won't get into that, you'll just have to watch the movie. The execution just didn't sit well with me and almost reminded me of a sort of B rated "thrown in" ending. That's what it reminded me of but the execution even though it missed the mark a little, didn't miss it by much I thought; I still felt like "well wow" after the movie was over. I won't give it as much credit as you but I do think this film deserved at least a little higher of a score from critics. I feel if they shaved off the time to two hours, took out a few unnecessary scenes and focused on the ones they had and made them just as impactful or more, and polished up the ending a little more, it could have been significantly fresh with its originality. You're score is perfectly fair in my opinion as well

  • @capnmo6718
    @capnmo6718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +178

It was a little more than luke warm. It's an interesting story and gives us beautiful cinematography, but it's wonky in places. It relies too heavily on exposition. What bothered me most was the psychology that moves the narrative is completely abandoned by the climax. The movie just gives up on itself. I was fully invested in the first hour or so, but things just start to unravel. It was a fine movie, far from excellent.

    • @quintessenceSL
      @quintessenceSL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Kinda have to agree. The ending's fire parallels to the burning of the sister was very heavy-handed, and missed the inferences that played so well in the beginning. There also could have been contrasts with the doctor's quest vs. the patient's delusions (in a sense both are going for a type of immortality), that instead are kept mostly as a plot devices.
And worst of all there was only one really compelling scene in the movie (the bar), where you get a sense of how out of place Hannah is and how dire the circumstances are.
I think most people are so hard on this movie is that it had the potential to be truly great, but just sort of collapsed in on itself.

Chris, just because something is original and "not like anything else" than doesn't automatically mean it's good. If critics automatically gave good reviews to completely original films for being just that, it would be dishonest and it would be unfair criticism.
Imagine if you gave something like Nine Lives or Norm of The North a pass just because they aren't based on something that already exists. That's a silly concept.

I liked this movie up until the ending when all this culminated to a fist fight with this epic blockbuster-y score. The reveal of what all this was about, the reason for the entire place was so absurd and ridiculous. It almost undid all the greatness that had come out of the first two hours. Also, what does it take for Lockhart to leave this place? Normal people would've been gone very early, but instead of getting the hell out of there he's exploring and researching this place and screaming, "where's Penbrook?!" the entire time. He (spoilers) literally got out at one point, and was free in the town, yet he gets back in the car and goes back because he is just idiotic. I still however really liked this movie for those first two hours, and think is worth checking out. Not because it's an original movie (original movies come out every single weekend, there's been like 30 already this year) but because it's one of the most well done mystery films I've seen in years. Even if the answer to the mystery isn't all that great.

Brandon Torres I don't think Lockhart is a normal person though. There were quite a few small hints throughout the movie that should make you question who was actually the insane one. Also a lot of small inconsistent details that seemed deliberate like him getting his teeth back for example. The sickness might have been man-made, but that doesn't mean he wasn't sick.

Love how you described this film, I absolutely loved it!! How you have an unbiased opinion I respect very much. It was undeniably overwhelming and the amount of care they put into the editing and the sound touches and just very small details you don't get a lot and was astounding to me, I loved how strange and almost unworldly it was and exactly how you said "what's going on with my life" the more and more I think about that movie the more I love it, simply because it is very different and it gives you almost a sense of a reality touch, and kind of hits close to home when it comes to how realistic the scenario they started the movie out with is. Over all in a nut shell was an awesome experience and I loved the fact that dragged it out so long because it allows them to put in that much more of a good finished product. B+ I think it deserves an A just because of how well thought out this really was!!

It's so different than every other movie we see out there. It stands alone as it's own original film with a blend of a couple different genres. I loved it 👍🏻

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Chris is correct, every shot and sound is so lush with information and it was hard to keep up. however, the directing is so good that you are sure the answers were placed somewhere in the movie. I personally want to watch it again to see if it can fill in the gaps. It is too finely crafted; the filmmaking should not be underestimated.

This film still looks really interesting and I love movies that mess with your head so I'll have to make my own opinion when I watch it myself and see if these critics are right, the imdb ratings usually seem fairly accurate to what I would rate most movies though so I'm not expecting anything great.

Actually as I've read through most of the critic's reviews, no one has disliked it for being original. In fact almost every critic has said they would've liked it a whole lot more...except it's waaaaaay too long. I'll admit midnight last night I had a shot at seeing this or The Great Wall and chose Great Wall just because this is almost as long as a Lord of the Rings movie. And really if you're going to be that long I do feel then that you had better be blowing us away otherwise it's just dragging it out for pretentiousness' sake.

I just saw this today and I was absolutely blown away. I never once felt bored watching this because it was paced in such a way that allowed to me to think about what was happening, but just as I'd think I'd come to a conclusion it would throw something else into the mix. In terms of atmosphere I thought this film was perfect. As the film went on I felt as if I were falling more and more into a dream, which I feel was intended given by a similar thing happening to the protagonist. I feel like the symbolic imagery is almost on par with films like American Beauty and not to mention the important social commentary this film provides. I understand that a lot of people aren't as open minded as I am, so I feel like a lot of these deeper messages will be looked over because of the overall strangeness and sickeningly disturbing imagery present in the film. There is one moment where a character is revealed and cgi is used that took me out of the movie a little bit, but apart from that I was entranced from the first shot to the last.

Hi Chris ! I'm from France, I'm 42 and love your insight on movies. I just saw "A cure for Wellness" on bluray and agree with every word you said. This film is brillant, original, beautifully shot and I think it's sad most people can't appreciate its qualities. I can clearly feel an influence from old school Universal films towards the end (Dracula, Frankenstein , Phantom of the Opera) a bit of Kubrick and also Dario Argento (the moutain setting reminds me of the beginning of Phenomena). Keep up the good work !

BUT: To me this movie had outstanding visuals, soundscapes and many more awesome stylistic devices, but the story? The plot was paperthin and see-through, I knew what was going on after 30 Minutes and the movie kept going for 2 and a half hours of trying to confuse me about what is going on here... when in the end it was kinda exactly what I thought, because it is a thing that many many storys told before. Still: Very watchable movie!

I`m not the same person anymore but it caused some flashback to the time when directors like David Lynch and David Cronenberg transformed me into a "fanatic" movie enthusiast. (Similar like M. Night S. did for Chris.) And for me "Twin Peaks" was forshadowing the "Golden Age of TV".

Really interested in seeing more Dehaan so I'll probably head the recommendation.
I do have a bit of a problem with your point about critics being hypocritical about wanting more original films. If I'm tired of having hotdogs and hamburgers all the time and want something new and original, throwing chopped squid on my plate doesn't entirely solve my issue. There are a whole host of others factors that go into what someone wants out of something new or original. Just throwing something new at someone because that was the only preference they made known regardless of quality, comprehensiveness, pacing, ect. doesn't mean critics are necessarily being unreasonable or hypocritical if they take issue with the movie.
I think it should also be noted that original films like Enemy, The Tree of Life, or anything from Shane Carruth's have pretty high critical scores on rotten tomatoes. I see it as more of a case by case sort of thing rather than critics universally not appropriating more adventures endeavors.

I saw the trailer for this movie & immediately knew I'd at least appreciate Dane's performance & the aesthetics - Im a sucker for a movie you can sink into! Unlike some people when it got to the third act - I fell in love. You're completely right that it's not perfect but something about this film & the way it pulls you in *chefs kiss*

I feel a cult classic coming! This is such a good movie. It would of been better if it was boiled down to about 1 hr and 40 minutes. Still can't hold back the good, and bad (You'll know why when you see the movie. It still haunts me.) of this film.

    SPOILERS
I really don't like when movies or shows have a character hallucinating without an explanation, especially without elements of the supernatural, like why did Lockhart thought the sauna had no doors? Why did Hannah appeared to teleport when she was first shown? Why did Lockhart saw eels while in the tank? I get that it gives a "creepy vibe' to the movie or whatever but it just took me out of the movie. (I know the doctor "explained" the illusions saying its just the toxins leaving the body but isn't that just pseudo science? How did the Lockhart and Pembrocke survived being in water without breathing ? So many unanswered questions and a twist that was predictable since the start, really didn't enjoy this movie.
Also, Lockhart goes from being brainwashed to normal to brainswashed and back to normal again wtf?

The water was contaminated by eels, so he was drinking little doses of poison everyday. This is why he was having hallucinations & his body was growing weaker, then he didn't want to leave after a while.

... the outter edges of your shirt-pockets mesmerize me everytime you move.
I don't know if it's because my screen-resolution is so small, but... daaaamn... so trippy!

Nick Is Dank Get Out was great, it's surreal and not focused on the jump scares but more of getting under your skin. Literally left the screening an hour ago and was impressed.

The cinematography and art direction of this movie are gorgeous. It's worth seeing for that alone. I first sensed that many of the shots felt like Kubrick homages, and then I could clearly see the influence of the Shining, but after awhile I noticed more subtle Kubrick references or easter eggs, that could easily go unnoticed. There was almost a word for word Dr. Strangelove homage, when one of the characters started talking about "the Purity of our precious bodily fluids", mimicking the line Ripper gives to Mandrake, in DrStrangelove. Like Chris, I also got a strong Shutter Island vibe from this film. Both the general premise and the beautiful set design, with it's period set architecture, and clinical sterile feel. You'd think these comparisons would be a negative, but somehow the movie still feels unique and original too.

I really liked it tbh, and it didn’t come all that unexpected with the whole backstory of the place being the first thing we learn about it. The whole movie you get these shutter island/shining Post-horror psychological thriller vibes, and then at the end it unmasks itself (see what I did there?) and shows that at its core it’s really a retelling or an homage to the classic monster stories, Dracula, Frankenstein, even some lovecraft-vibes... and since I like both, it was just the perfect whole package for me.
