A friend of mine and I have been getting back into the water after a pretty long hiatus and trying to keep up with the trends is like trying to keep a desktop computer up to date. With that said a couple of resounding messages come through- dive with what you're comfortable with- but consider the impact of your choices to your safety and that of your buddy so that you can be prepared to use YOUR setup (the one the diver is using) in an emergency. While I'm not tech rated by any stretch, I do find the simplistic, reliable and compact systems in your basic rigs to be advantageous for a number of very practical reasons so as I make my adjustments I do enjoy watching your videos so I can practice my routines with your methods demonstrated in videos like this one. Certainly any smart diver will consider your techniques tools for the tool box that can be used to replace, integrate or supplement their other techniques. I'm working through an independent / solo diver program... any personal insights about solo diving experiences that might not be offered in the material? Just a curiosity. Why not watch for IP drop when testbreathing? Yes the tank valve is verified but still. Good to know? Presenting the longhose why not present is as it is donated. Mouthpiece pointing forward and hand on hose. No practical application but it looks better J
IP drop won't necessarily tell you if the tank valve is open part way. You will only find out deeper and when the tank pressure drops. I know from experience: at 20m and 130 bar I felt increased resistance at the end of each breath. When I looked at my gauge I noticed it dropped to zero then returned to 130 bar. That didn't not happen at 200 bar tank pressure on the surface.The valve was open about 1 turn, after I trusted had another person to open it for me. Fortunately I realized what had happened and was able to continue the dive without further incident.

Yes. focus is on the receiver. the donator took a breath befor donating and has PLENTY of time to get the backup that is right underneath the chin - even without hands that is possible. So Eyeconatct - donate - make sure receiver is ok, think of ourself again :-)
You're good guys, but I am not a big fan of giving your primary in out of air situation, It doubles the risk as you have to find yourself too (the octopus). What about if it fails you or you're in tight gap cave diving...
Then you’ve got 2 full lungs of air, can calm your buddy down and if your secondary reg is total shit you can buddy breathe. If your buddy grabs your octo and it doesn’t work…you’re going to have a panicked diver and you don’t want that….
Ah yes, restriction in cave diving applied to recreational configurations. Not like the long hose was devised so 2 divers could share gas whilst exiting from a right spot in single file, oh wait, it was. The backup regulator is on a necklace, with the correct hose length and sized necklace it sits under your chin. 1.) Donate gas 2.) Once regulator has reached your buddy/team members mouth, insert backup. This should take less than 5 seconds. As opposed to having to look for a regulator on your person that you cannot confirm a.) is in the place you put it if it's held in a plastic clip/hose holder, and b.) if it's working. That said, if you're cave diving you should have redundant gas source(s).

Idea is that someone out of air may panic as they approach you out of breath and simply GRAB the one in your mouth, you then just switch to your short hose below your chin. It's a logical assumption and provides a nice hose length to allow comfortable space once the out of air diver calms down and also allows you to go single file through narrow passages.

Same here dude! I had pretty much perfect trim the moment I jumped in water, just from watching the right stuff on youtube. Getting it right from the start is priceless! Now go get some dives, because some things are only learnt through experience.

In a rec setting without a canister light you'll just need to manage your hose by keeping it tucked away in waist area, that's the most problem I've had, it just floating up a little but it's easily corrected.
Ok this might be stupid but I don’t get how you ascend. You don’t touch your bc and you can’t be finning to the surface because you still have horizontal trim... It’s pretty cool. I hope I’m not missing something obvious
When using a light with the belt mounted battery, is there a reason you have the cable going across your body to the opposite hand? Personal preference?
Hi. This is because the entire setup is a system - everything works together. On the left side I have the stage (when I have stages) so the light canister goes on the right side. My instrument is right as I use my left hand for bouyancy control. Furthermore my right hand is the one I need to work and donate. So the light goes left.
At 5:30 and 9:00 you remove your primary light and use a double ended bolt snap rather than the bolt snap which is already attached to the light. Why is it done in this way?
Hi Ian, when I would use the fixed Boltsnap the light would shine forward and blind my partner. With the little loop on the cable and a double ender, the light shines down - I have light to work and no blinding will happen. We cal it "temporary storage" I also use this when i write in my notes etc.

whats benefit of 7 foot hose on reg? do you give that to a person in need of you Octopus and you use the short one?

Just take a larger breath than usual and let it out slowly and you will naturally ascend due to the added buoyancy. No need to fin!
