People are misinforming you in the other comments lol this always happens when discussing 2pac vs big. Pac and Biggie were friends at first, Pac was helping him gain exposure and letting him perform in his shows. Further down the lane, Pac ended up in the same studio as Big (by coincidence), he was there to record a track for somebody that he and Big both knew. It was a set up, he was shot 5 times when he got there. He then went to prison after being set up and falsely accused for sexual assault.
While in prison, Pac is figuring out who was responsible and Big releases Who Shot Ya which was just bad timing. Pac felt like Big was being a coward and had abandoned him as he was afraid of the guys who had 2pac shot which were notorious people from his neighbourhood (they were also extorting Puffy who Big is signed to).
A lot of other events took place too to ignite the beef like Snoop and his crew getting shot at that people seem to leave out and of course Pac getting with Bigs wife but there's too much to get into.
Pac died in Vegas after punching a gang member and Big died in LA most likely due to people being upset over Pacs passing.

The hook of this song is a parody to Junior MAFIA's - "Playa's Anthem", Biggie sings the hook to that song, so he used the tune of that hook for this diss song. Junior MAFIA was a group by Biggie that had Lil Kim, Lil Cease, Nino etc as the members. The fake money reference is a mockery of one of Junior MAFIA's songs "Get Money." 2Pac while in jail was told that Biggie and Puff knew about the guys that shot him 5 times at Quad Studios, so he was mad that Biggie didn't inform him; hence the diss. There's a different version where at the end he insults more people including Jay Z and Nas. Faith Evans denies ever having sex with 2Pac though. Mobb Deep wasn't pleased with 2Pac dissing New York and the member of Mobb Deep who had sickle cell is Prodigy, who's also dead now. 2Pac had beef with so many people before he died.

That was when I was in Africa and everywhere you go you could here dudes blasting it off in their car stereo. So, I'll be surprised if an adult says they haven't heard it. It was and still is the most popular diss track where I came from. Even if you hate rap you would here it being played everywhere you go, even on public transport. On the other hand, it was only 2 weeks ago I heard Ether by Nas. To be honest, I never knew that song existed. I waz searching online for the greatest diss tracks of all time and saw it listed there, then I had to search for it on TH-cam and to be fair, as I type I don't even remember what the beat sounds like, but I think he had some strong lyrics

Tupac was so relentless after being shot up, convinced that BIG and Puffy were behind the set up. His anger added to the strength of his ability to shape such powerful lyrics crafted one of the harshest and most devastating diss tracks recorded. He is so on point and focused that each word is like a punch to the face, I felt bad for BIG. Few diss tracks have been able to match the ferocity of "Hit'em up". That's a career ending song for whoever is at the receiving end.

This song and video just shows how human and how young Pac really was. Pac had a gentle soul, we can see this from his poems, keep ya head up, changes, dear mama. But there is only so much someone can take. Of course if your trusted friends shot you 5 times, if you were framed for rape so that you would be forced to sign with a certain record company, you would be angry. This song is all about that uncontrollable anger and the fantasy of revenge. Pac didn't hold back, he's emotions will forever live on, whether positive or negative. He's not perfect, he's not God, but he's human, and I'm sure we see a little of ourselves in him. We don't get to do it so publicly though......

    my dear 💜
and to the lady named 'Lisa' mentioned @ 6:08 Thanks so much for suggesting that KSO starts -- with listening to 'Dear Momma' first (definitely was a very good recommendation to start with)
2Pac was very creative, talented, & versatile....
and in no way should -- he be limited to and viewed from just one angle 💯

Legends have it too say until this day rappers who really from ny is still scared to go too cali . Lol this song right here will expose if you really gangsta or not
This song will bring Tupac back alive in our hearts. He made sure people don't forget when he dropped this
2pac is incredible and years later diddy can't play the song they never recovered. The song it self made them traumatize. Tupac is the truth i will always respect him for that. 20 more years after and this still will be the best diss track
Vaseline by ice cube is not powerful as Tupac hit him up. How the hell Tupac controlling and making people scared beyond the grave that crazy. If anyone was involved with Tupac death or anything like that this song will haunt them they start shaking when they here it. This song is the most powerful song in rap. An its like you can't laugh you just have that OMG look on your face. I am glad I witness this ❤
