- Haven't had much chance to fly my new Night Radian as the weather has been terrible. Did manage to do a few flights, but on the 5th flight something went wrong and it got destroyed in a crash. 2020 sucks so far.

I suspect the crash wasn't the elevator servo, but instead the wing twisting at high speed.
It was at 75% throttle in a 45* dive, and it did the very charecteristic gradual roll to the side and no elevator authority. The only way to get out of it is to cut the throttle and hope you have enough height to slow down and pull up.
You can even see the extreme flutter just before it hits the ground on the pilot pov video.
The radian just can't handle that kind of flying, its a pretty well known 'problem' with them, and I've crashed a few times because of it (although not that bad). I've had 4 radians now, with various modifications, and none of them like flying fast.
The broken servo most likely happened in the crash.
I think you'd be suprised though, it looks very repairable.
That's a interesting theory, and you could well be right. I only suspect servo failure as it seems odd that all the other electronics survived bar that 1 servo. For some reason, now that servo doesn't work, pitch control on the radio has been routed to the rudder, which means any attempt I make to move the elevator instead moves the rudder. If that was happening in the air, then no matter what I did on the radio, all I would have been able to do was control the rudder, which at its extremes could have made the radian want to try and roll. Your theory is perfectly viable however, and annoyingly will probably never know for certain
Giz FPV that sounds like a faulty board if the elevator output goes to the rudder, those Matek f411's are a very strange beast, very problematic, had loads of problem with mine including the spiral of death like this crash, I'd think very carefully before putting that particular board in your new plane if you didn't change the outputs in iNav.
My Matek F411 is now retired for this reason, just too untrustworthy in comparison to its big brother the 405 which is in my ARWing and has never crashed it.
Yeah, I suspect the elevator servo got damaged on impact with terra firma, which isn’t uncommon with nose-first crashes.
Sorry for your loss. I also have a night radian. It's running a Frsky R9 Slim+ with a Foxeer Cat starlight camera. I enjoy flying at night. Over lighted parking lots. I also have a vario module plugged into the R9 Slim receiver. Very nice to thermal and soar while FPV.
I am not surprised by your conclusion. I just bought a night radian and the elevator was stripped out of the box. Made a modification to use metal gear servos and now I will be more at peace in the air. I’m sorry this happened to you.
Yeah, unfortunately it seems the stock electronics on these things are trash. Had I known that in advance I would have replaced the servo's before flight. I hope you have more luck than I did :)
Oh man, I love my Night Radian. It was my first store bought RC plane in 8 years. And the first in a line of store bought planes over the last couple of years. When I saw it in the hobby shop, I immediately wanted to get more involved in the hobby, instead of flying my old beat up Champ trainer from 8 years prior, so I scratch built several aircraft before getting the Night Radian a year later. I’m sorry to see your mishap. Maybe you could have bought spare parts, like a spare fuselage, servo, and wing set. That’s all that appeared to be damaged on the video.
Good to see you back Giz as for 5th flight I feel your pain . Cant wait for your Skyhunter mini as i am in the process of finishing up my Skyhunter 1800 just have a few more 3d printed upgrades to go I mostly copied your style of Plane I hope all is well with you and yours
You should still try to rebuild it, my Tundra came home in five pieces once and that was put back together and flies just the same today, you're not flying hard enough if your not repairing at least one thing after each flight, so I'm told lol.

Omg , I know it doesn't help but I know exactly how you felt. All that work and testing and to watch it fall is like watching one kids come up missing. Sorry brother. Let's move forward and get that next build on. I'd also like to see how you mapped the LEDs in the configurator. I can do simple but that was a piece of art. Really loved it. God bless

Crazy. The exact same thing happened to my Radian Pro many years ago. The elevator just stopped working mid flight and the plane took a nose dive 😯

That's probably the worst servo to lose. I suppose you can get away with the loss of any other servo on 4ch plane but not the elevator.
Are you using a seperate BEC for servo's and LED's? Had the same problem when attaching an extra 5th servo for pan on the Matek, I got jitters when moving all servo's. Think the broken servo is caused by crash, not in flight (not easy to break gear in the air, or it should of been weakened in an early crash)
I too had an elevator servo fail, fortunately I caught it on the ground. Replaced with a metal gear servo.

Same thing happened to me a few day's ago, i was casually flying my bixler the all of a sudden it started falling and the reason for that was aleron servo stopped working in mid flight and thats how my bixler ended up in trash i also took the electronics

I've had the same problem on my zohd dart... a servo died mid flying. Although the airframe is still good to fly, my runcam split mini2 and my f405 mini died... never trust the stock servos on zohd model they said...

That’s not destroyed!! Get the UHU Por out..... Good luck with the mini Skyhunter. I had a lot of jello on mine with the camera on the nose. CCD FPV camera was ok but the rolling shutter HD Runcam was useless. It was motor induced vibration but despite motor changes and prop balancing I never got rid of it completely.

Wow , FPV Three channel glider . I have been wanting to try , im new to fpv and was not sure if it would work without Ailerons . Do you have to use a particular FC ? I have a Cyclops storm , do you think it would work ? Three channel ?

Did you tape or glue your tail together? This plane is known for its tail coming apart mid flight if the tail is only taped on. Sorry about your plane.

I just stopped buying E-flite products after this. Quality just isn't very good by modern standards
looking for some real help i have a zohd dart my 3rd one you know how that goes but i have inav set up working great other than when the plane is in stabilized or horizon mode the plane rocks back and forth at 5 degrees each way i have tried auto tune for an hr lowed the P gain to 0 nothing seems to be working never had this problem with any of my models need some help please
What FPV equipment do you use on it?
did you get a chance to test the return to home setup? trying to figure out the settings for a radian as well without all the lights

I think you're right about the servo. Front end crash forces wouldn't typically cause such a jam. The Parkzones are little POS'! Mine are sloppy on a brand new, 3 week old NR 2.0. I just bought new Hitec HS-55's for $11/ea and they're really solid and stout analog servos.Haven't installed them yet but originally intended to put flaps on the NR 2.0 on a second set of wings I bought using the same servos. Just tore out the original LED controller and installed a WingNut circuit board for control from the Tx.
You used an f411wing, mine browned out and crashed my dart about 4 times before I sorted it out. It's a shitty fc.

Giz, guess what if you build it right as im sure you will, then you will love the MSH, watch out for low speed turns as she will want to stall on you, keep a bit of speed in the turns, i have a sunnysky x2216 1400kv on mine 3000mah 4s and 8x4 prop, LOTS of grunt, and best of all loads of space for LED`s, i have COB led`s all over mine th-cam.com/video/bU4alciT0sQ/w-d-xo.html
