    Ugh I'm not going to waste too much time explaining why trancing is a
    terrible thing to do to your rabbit, but it is formally known as tonic
    immobility which is a state of paralysis utilized by prey animals to feign death. It shouldn't take a
    neuroscientist to figure out why this isn't healthy. It raises the heart
    rate, presses internal organs onto the spinal cord, and is a vulnerable
    position for your rabbit to be in. If you own a rabbit, you need to be
    responsible and understand that your rabbit is not a toy for you to
    position as you please. There are plenty of other ways to groom your bun. I simply distract mine with food in his play pen and groom him while he's eating, bunny butt and thumpers included.

    • @waterbottlecompany
      @waterbottlecompany 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nina Dawson firstly, you should bond with your bunny. You calling it ‘a little bitch’ makes it seem as if you don’t like or even hate your rabbit. You should start with petting your bunny to ‘trick’ it into thinking that when you are just petting your bun, not brushing it. In general you should be more understanding towards your bunny because they are prey animals and are easily scared.

    That "trance" position is a survival instinct the rabbit use when trapped by a foe. By fully relaxing the body the rabbit can trick the foe to believe that the rabbit is dead, and then release it's grip. When released, the body goes into fleeing mode (raised heart and breathing rate, stress). Therefore, you should avoid putting your rabbit on the back too often.

    Rabbits should not EVER be placed on their backs, and tranced. Do your research first!!! It puts them in a tonic state that can potentially kill them from a heart attack. This video shows great grooming techniques, but trancing should be avoided at all costs. An educated rabbit owner would not do this or cause anymore stress then necessary to their pet.

    • @LoriWolfcat
      @LoriWolfcat 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correction! MOST rabbits don't like it and it's stressful for them. Just like MOST rabbits hate to be picked up. But there are some rabbits who love to be picked up just like there's SOME rabbits who like lying on their backs. MOST rabbits HATE baths, while others love baths. You can't just say "rabbits" or "All rabbits hate this," or "Rabbits love this!" because you would look like a fool. Not EVERYONE loves, or hates EVERYTHING, so keep that in mind next time.

      Lori Wolfcat You must be a rabbit breeder. I own 5 rescued house rabbits (dumps from breeders because they didn't meet show standards) and foster rabbits for the local humane society. None of the rabbits I have ever encountered had a need to be given a bath too,flipped onto its back and tranced for nail trims, scent gland cleaning or brushing them out. A butt bath should only be given if the rabbit can't clean itself. My rabbits are all healthy and litter trained, HATE being picked up but loved to be pet. I see no need to cause undue stress to my pets because of ignorant suggestions. Do what you want with your own rabbits.

Look it up. If you lay your rabbit on the back regularly for cuddles and such, stop it. Rabbits generally do not like to be picked up either because of their natural instincts. It's okay to lay a rabbit on its back for when you have to cut their nails, but not for cuddles. They do not like it!

  • @doneveringham5997
    @doneveringham5997 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    She's doing right; supporting the bunny in this position is very important.
    The reason it's not good to force a rabbit in this position and give them time to trust is that; Rabbits have very weak stomach muscles. When they are placed on their back, their stomach changes position much like ours and puts significant pressure on their little heart thus reducing their heart's efficiency to pump. Their brain receives less oxygen and they slip into a trance. They are not really sleeping, rather in borderline shock. It is safe and relaxing for them provided they know you are there and they trust you. You need to reinforce this trust by providing constant support. It may take some time, but let them develop that trust at their rate.
    It's very important to support them when in this prone position, so that when they wake up, they do not snap their spine and/or receive back damage from panicking.
    Mature rabbits will learn this position to be very relaxing after someone helping them with it. But young will not and are very fragile.
    Wild rabbits develop the use of this skill not for relaxing as they rarely can, but to hide from their predators. They use it to "Play Dead." Most if not all predators will not eat an already dead animal.

    WOW, I'm impressed with that relaxed trance, but I agree with the other posters-I could NEVER get Tyler into a relaxed position like that. I cannot even get him on his back, he kicks and freaks out. In fact, in order for me to trim his claws, I have to swaddle him in a towel, making sure his eyes are covered, snuggle him like a baby, and gently pull each paw out, slowly, one at a time, in order to clip them all, and it's still hard to do it even with all that.

    Poor those rabbits and bunnies from people like her. They don't know how to care for bunny well. At first, you don't put bunny on its back, because as people mention here in comments, it can kill them, second, you don't need to clean a bunny really, because they are enough capable of cleaning themselves, except when they have a bunny partner by their side and they groom each other however they like. Since they get scared easily and then they just stand there like a rock and playing dead, or they run as fast as they can, they should be left alone, not to pick them up, not to clean them with water or brushes, because they don't need it, they can care for themselves alone, but you can give them food and pet them just like bunnies will do the same to each other. My bunny is healthy, well, happy, jumping around, I didn't even took him to the vet, there's no need for it, because even he doesn't need one but prefer to live a calm, normal and happy life and I try to make him to feel like he's home. The more you take bunny to the vet and use products on him or her, the more sick they will be and unhappy, just like people, that go often to doctors for any type of accident, sometimes is good, but sometimes is too much. Nature is here for us and provide us enough resources to survive, just we should know how to use it well. Bunnies accommodated to natural life in the forest, they are wild animals and they get sick less there than in houses where some of them are limited in what they can do but in a forest they are free, even if there's predators, it's their normal life and they even see us as predators if we don't care for them well. Never try to pick up a bunny if he or she doesn't want, it shows how unhappy they will be, just you don't see it. Never use water on them to clean, don't lay them on their back if they don't want, and clean them from their back.. They can do it all alone.

      Hey there. I'm a long time rabbit owner, and have read up on the matter. I wont pretend to be an expert, but I have consulted experts, most of whom agree that trancing a rabbit in the way that is show. In the video can be quite dangerous for the rabbit. Admittedly, this is sometimes induced by vets in extreme circumstances, but it shouldn't be done lightly, or without a damn good reason.
      Rabbits are prey animals, and the state that is induced when they are tranced is a form of fear induced defense mechanism. They may look completely relaxed, because they are literally playing dead. The fact that this state is fear induced should worry you since indeed it's not unheard of for rabbits to die from shock and fear, including induced trancing.

    When I had a rabbit, I would hold them flat against my chest, head up, and stroke their ears. When they seemed relaxed I would then lean forward, settling the bun on my lap on his back. I could then get him into a relaxed state. This worked with my bun and several other rabbits.

    DO NOT PUT YOUR RABBIT ON IT'S BACK!!! It is EXTREMELY dangerous. This animal is in a total state of fear and IS NOT RELAXED!! Rabbits are preyed animals in their natural habitat and will enter this trance like state in order to play dead and escape capture. The only movement you will see is it's nose twitching because of the panic. It's heart is racing an may well die of fright. This disgusting video needs to be removed without delay!!!

      I don't think you know what a scared rabbit looks like. Stop overreacting, and get a grip. She is not hurting that rabbit in the slightest. The rabbit is obviously relaxed, or else it would have tried to escape while it was on it's back. Please stop acting like a terrified little child, and learn what a REAL rabbit does.

      e smith Here's a thought. I'm pretty sure the woman is keeping track of the rabbit's heart rate. People aren't stupid. Just because she doesn't specifically tell you every little thing doesn't mean she's endangering something. And typing in all caps doesn't prove your point. It just makes you look like an overly dramatic jack ass who can't get a grip and move on. It's just a fucking video. Not everyone is going to be an expert.

    • @MacyPooh196

      e smith People aren't going to do things 100% correctly every single time. When people have children, I'm pretty sure they don't do everything right the first time around. The same goes for pets. You act like because she does this, or because I disagree with you that I don't know what I'm talking about. If you're going to correct someone how about you not act like a stuck up jerk and tell them politely.

    *TO EVERYBODY who thinks it's all right to turn a rabbit on its back.* Have you ever seen a rabbit on its back in nature? A rabbit laying unconsciously on its back in nature is a *DEATH SENTENCE*! Therefore it's *not normal* to turn this animal and cause him this state of trance.

    OMG why do you put a rabbit on its back? You should know, as a groomer, that he's going into a tonic immobility state and cannot move because he's like hypnotized but still feels and hears everything but not be able to move. Thats abuse, as simple as that! And you show people how are trying to learn grooming that its oke to put a rabbit on its back and it is not.

    Yeah it does, because it's in a trance. Some animals (fairly rare) can be put in a physical trance by altering the posture of the animal in a certain way (usually upside down). Bunnies love it because it calms them down and the absolute worst thing for any rodent, is stress.
    Sharks are the most impressive animals that can be put in a total body trance-state. Just google "shark trance upside down".
    It really genuinely is mind blowing to watch (and do!). Plus it doesn't harm the animal.

    Pet stores sell dry shampoos for chinchillas, hamsters and rabbits. Get that instead of bathing him. If fleas are a problem, there are some cat flea repellants that work (I can't remember which ones at the moment). Bathing rabbits, or even getting their undercoat drenched in water, causes their body temperature to drop and can easily develop hypothermia.

      I'm sorry this is not true.
      I have two bunnies, one is quite short tempered, the other one is shy and very fearful. Neither of them like to stay on their back because that is a very stressfull position and makes them feel harmless. I had to turn them upside down few times for various serious issues [stitches after an operation] and i know that they tend to react very differently when i flip them over but they both relax at one point and go to a trance like state - which is not natural or positive for them.
      That just means: no bun likes to be put in that position. It's stressfull and should be avoided.
      Do that only if you have no choice and you have to check something important. Other than that please avoid it.

    Instead of arguing about if putting your rabbit on its back is healthy or not & agree ALL BUNNIES ARE DIFFERENT. I spoke to a vet technician & she works with many bunnies. Its perfectly healthy, however not all rabbits will be able to do that or like it. This constant arguing is unnecessary.

  • @Jop3lius

    'bunny trance' is actually extremely stressful for your rabbit, just because they dont move doesnt mean they are relaxed because they think they are dead.

  • @TeenyTeh
    @TeenyTeh 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @1MikalaB Hi 1MikalaB, you're right that this trance position is the rabbit is "playing dead". Rabbits do this when they get caught by a predator so that the predator, thinking the rabbit is dead, will loosen it's grip on it - it's then that the rabbit can try to escape. Trancing is NOT recommended to be done everyday (as say a bonding experience), but might be necessary to clean/ groom your rabbit or perform health checks on it if it doesn't stay still in other positions.

  • @TeenyTeh
    @TeenyTeh 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @1MikalaB Hi 1MikalaB, as mentioned, it's not recommended to be done everyday (or for long periods at a time), but when you need your rabbit still and not struggling (for when you need to groom them, apply medication etc), it is a solution. If of course, you can keep your rabbit from wriggling around/ moving around in other ways (on all 4s), by all means. Just sharing my experience as tracing works for Sugar (who's really finicky). =)

    @AyNeKy Hi AyNeKy, you can clean her paws by takin a cloth soaked in clean water & gently wiping her paws & feet (she may not like it thou cos these areas r rather sensitive). What u can do to prevent her paws & feet frm gettin dirty again is to ensure that her litter box is kept clean & dry at all times (change her litter regularly i.e. once every 3-4 days). The thing with rabbits is, as long as we keep their living areas clean, they'll do the necessary grooming to keep themselves clean. =)
