- In honor of a recent "Kesher Nafshi" fundraiser, Rabbi YY Jacobson interviewed world-renowned therapist Rabbi Shimon Russell, author of "Raising a Loving Family." This was on Sunday 9 Adar I, 5784, Feb 18, 2024.
The conversation between Rabbi Russell & Rabbi Jacobson explored how to raise a loving family in our times, how to educate, inspire, and mentor our children, providing them with their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, so that they can grow up to be healthy, happy and inspired human-beings and Jews. The conversation also focused on Crisis-Chinuch, dealing with struggling children of all ages.
The conversation explored the duty and opportunity for parents to heal themselves and confront their own coping mechanisms and wounds so that they can show up for their children authentically and vulnerably, without using their children as tools to numb their own pain.

I once heard someone say , which I thought was very wise , “ What children, especially “ adult children “ need to realize, yes their parents are guilty of not parenting correctly, but they are not to be blamed “. From the parents viewpoint ,based on their background , dealing with what all they had to deal with , they did the best they knew how or could. It is a two way street.

The answer to the child who says, “there is nothing to eat in this house,” is to answer him/her in a loving voice and say is what would you like to eat, maybe I can make something for you.” Focus on the child, not on yourself.

This is such a refreshing discussion. Sadly the Frum world has little use for individuality and free thinkers. Homogenization has become the singular driving value in much of the Frum world and free thinkers are seen as trouble makers. Yet, the reason why this is so problematic is because the Giants of the Tanach are our fundamental teachers of Jewish values because of how they were not afraid to think for themselves.
Emotional neglect, now i know where i went wrong, so where do i go from here😢
How do you remain supportive and loving if your child is engaged in something you know is a self destructive behavior? For example, a child is dating and talking about marrying a gentile woman and you know that if that happens and if you in any way support that behavior you are de facto supporting your child in destroying his progeny eternally. If a parent goes along with that and humors the child and children are brought into the world, they will not be Jewish and the descendants will be cut off from Yiddishkeit. What does a parent do in that sort of situation? How do they remain close to their child and keep a strong healthy relationship with said child, but at the same time don't allow the child to destroy his future. How does a parent negotiate a situation that will rip the family apart forever?
I would say the serenity prayer ask Hashem for the help to change what I can change and to let go what I cannot. If G-d forbid this child does go ahead and hookup (they can't really marry) after that you need to embrace them regardless so that you don't lose them and a partner a spouse can sometimes be temporary and it may take a long journey till they come back but you cannot change what you cannot change

This is not easy at all. It takes so so much from us to remain loving and present even in the presence of these mistakes and tragic failures. Rabbi Russle's new book can be helpful, Kesher Nafshi website is great, Avi Fishoff seminar for parents is awesome, and many of my lectures on the topic might help, on our website.

I listened to a podcast yesterday by Dr. Brad Reedy from Evoke therapy that addressed a mother in a different dilemma, but also a difficult struggle. It's the podcast titled, How do we love those hurting themselves? I find Dr. Reedy very insightful and helpful. His answer to that mother may help you as well. His podcasts and insights have helped me very much. Hope this helps you.

Why can't you understand the concept that not everyone leaves because of the lack of love.. Some people just don't believe this religion is true, or that any religion is true.. Jews laugh at Muslims, Muslims laugh at jews.. Same with every other religion. The ONLY reason YY Jacobson believes in Judaism is because he was born into it.. The ONLY reason he's a lubavitcher is because he was born into it.. So yes, get the concept, some people don't believe whatever they are taught and hence leave the religion.. This has nothing to do how much love and acceptance u show..
Besides the fact that according to the Jewish religion, a parent HAS TO hit their kids that don't obey, in fact a dad that hit his kid and killed him, is patur because he did a mitzva.. So vus dreiste in cheinik..
