Near the sea... On the sand... Touching the blue sky... Two people danced... They were one... One with nature... One with each other... Their hands touched... Their fingers clasped... Two hands... Two beautiful hands... Entwined by true love... Not the love of fairytales... But the love that never ends, never breaks, stays strong to the end... Even when they both wade through the dark waters of hard times... They know that, together... Till the end... They will never be apart... .............. Two people... Against the sunset... Near the waves... Dancing on the sand... Touching the sky... Their hands clasp tightly... And they smile........ ........................... .........
It is better to look at this piece with nature than the stage. The sensitivity and mature dancing of these dancers wiith the nature is piece of highly profound poetic piece. Yuan Yuan Tan is truly a very beautiful dancer with great artistry.
The thing i love the most about this is how much emotion the dancers portray without even having to look at eachother or the audience. They are the definition of artists.
The clinging lovers dance to the diminishing ray of the sunset; mirror in mirror never ends their dialogue and whispers. The dynamic light and camera angle superimpose closeup and silhouette lines. Movements and steps disappears in a love song.
Plastic, grace, agility Suddenly transformed into feeling. And without a word, proclaim the miracle. Dance in the world carries the elements of nature, Throws into the abyss of feelings And the silence ... and the only sound of the surf and clouds ...
What a vision of such deep expression through music and exquisite movement, by the sublime Yuan Yuan Tan, (principal ballerina with the wonderful, San Francisco Ballet company), and Damian Smith. P
I returned to this video cos he retired. Sighs, him and Yuan Yuan were amazing partners, so in sync and he's so gentle with her. Seems like all of my favourite dancers are going, Smith and now Daria Klimentova. T.T
The beauty of people, the beauty of dance, the beauty of scenery, the beauty of dancing forms and shapes, the Red and the Green became the Cyan, all of them are naturally merged together with the blue sky, the blue water of ocean and the colorful afterglow of Sunset. A mixed dance of contemporary and classic ballet. What a stunning dancing performance!
My all-time favorite piece of music, danced. By the ocean. At sunset. The film quality is iffy, but being there must have been as close to perfection as life gets.
That was perhaps one of THE most beautiful things I've ever seen in my entire life. Ethereal. It was some place between making love... and dieing. "Swans last dance" was in the comment thread. That makes sense. Bravo! Perfection. Thank you for sharing.
I like the modern style of the video. The way they embrace one other, the long straight clean lines, the effortless dancing, emphasis on the body and the beautiful love story. There union is so connected. The ocean view with the sunset beautiful.
Yuan Yuan and Damian are both the most fantastic examples of this version of Christopher Wheeldon's After the Rain. I saw another version with another female, and it was heavy, lumbering and all bum with deep creases in the leotard. Enjoy this while you can - folks.
IMHO, the best executed performance of After The Rain - and surely the best performance space to perform it. at the end of this dance, you could almost believe that they were in love.
Music is Spiegel Im Spiegel, from the album Alina, by Arvo Part. And while I agree that this is a lovely piece, it's the type of piece - the using the type of music - that many modern choreographers have been doing for a couple of decades. I applaud Christopher. But I do think some of the commenters need to get out a little more and see more diversity of dance.
This is the most beautiful thing i have ever seen in my entire life! It is absolutely perfect! Every time i watch it i get an overwhelming feeling inside.
yuan yuan tan is one of the most amazing dancers in the world! i wish she would do juliet or swan lake again. :( she is so much better than the new principals at the SFBallet! sometimes I feel like these modern pieces don't really showcase her amazing acting ability.
this is too good! loving the backdrop. a sunset! imagine the photo effects and video effects. too awesome! and Yuan Yuan is a pretty dancer. Damian is good looking. She seems really light!
In the dance of love, two souls entwine, A ballet of hearts, where trust defines. With every step, a silent vow, To hold and cherish, here and now. In tender gaze, their truths unspoken, A bond of love, unbreakable, unbroken. Through life’s grand stage, they move as one, A pas de deux, until the dance is done. Understanding deep, beyond the skin, A connection forged, from within. In every lift, in every turn, A trust that’s earned, not just to yearn. So let this poem of love be clear, It’s the understanding, connection, trust we hold dear. In every gesture, every glance, Love is the music, life is the dance.
See another excerpt from After the Rain performed by the Pennsylvania Ballet for their 50th Anniversary broadcast on PBS at video.pbs.org/video/2365232004/. The following pieces are featured: (1) At 03:43 is a different excerpt from the ballet "After the Rain" choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and set to the music "Tabula Rasa" (1st movt, Ludus) by Arvo Pärt; (2) At 15:48 is the "Under the Sun" Pas de Deux choreographed by Margo Sappington set to music by Michael Kamen; and (3) At 23:05 is "Diamonds" from the ballet Jewels choreographed by George Balanchine set to the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29.
Fabrice Camels and Victoria Jaiani do a beautiful version of this! They are from the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. I've seen it twice. This is my favorite way to re-live it. This is a precious gift....Thank god for youtube!
She has a really unique and fluid way of moving. That applause at the end seemed really lukewarm compared to how good the performance was. Love the music! Sounds familiar, I'm sure I've heard it before. Actually, it's composed by Arvo Part, not Maya Beiser as stated in the description.
Yuan Yuan Tan...with the long dark hair...legs that go on for miles...that delicate face with such a reserved expression but goodness knows how many things are going on underneath...this girl haunts my dreams!
Honestly, the lack of full body and feet shots didn't bother me. It showed that dance is more than just feet, which I think a lot of us forget. This video reminded me of why I love dance so incredibly much... It truly is a spiritual experience. I was moved to tears. Dancers really are Apollo's angels!
I've never understood why dancer/choreographer titles aren't simply the name of the music. I call this "Christopher Wheeldon's setting of Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel."
Paul Cienniwa forgive me for replying to a two year old comment, but the reason in this case is that this is one segment of a larger work which utilizes other pieces of music. only the pas de deux is set to spiegel im spiegel; the earlier segments of the ballet are set to the first movement of pärt's tabula rasa.
Hey, frogsmama, 'where's the meat'? The "meat" is on the dancer. There just isn't very much of it, because of her genetics, and the fact that she dances pretty much all day, every day. If she lifted weights instead and was hugely muscular, would you snark? Dance thins you down. Dancing at her level makes you lean. She's got just enough muscle and tendon to do what she obviously loves to do. Let her live her own life, and you live yours. You're watching someone who has made their life's work the expression of music through movement. Let her shine while she lives.
Thats my little bother...So proud I get chills everytime I watch this!
Wow, so cool!
Stephen Smith W.O.W. Magnificent. 🙏🏻
Bravo !!👏

I can watch this 10 times in a row and still tear up each and everytime. So beautiful that it nearly breaks my heart.
I'm speechless. There are no words appropriate to describe the absolute grace and beauty I just watched. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Exactly!
Absolutely I totally agree..Thank you for sharing this masterpiece..
Gorgeous setting for a gorgeous work.Would love to see it performed. "Beauty is Truth and Truth Beauty"
The clinging lovers dance to the diminishing ray of the sunset; mirror in mirror never ends their dialogue and whispers. The dynamic light and camera angle superimpose closeup and silhouette lines. Movements and steps disappears in a love song.
She has the body and grace to die for.. Totally envious.
I am left breathless by the beauty and sensitivity of that pas de deux and the dancers. Such perfection is a rare joy. Thank you.
Such beauty in the the dancers, the music, the emotion, the choreography.......all i can say is magnificent!!
Plastic, grace, agility
Suddenly transformed into feeling.
And without a word, proclaim the miracle.
Dance in the world carries the elements of nature,
Throws into the abyss of feelings
And the silence ... and the only sound of the surf and clouds ...
Day he shall bring good luck
And wonders in the bargain,
New meetings without fuss,
A dream come true!

Beautiful words. I have seen Yuan Yuan many times and she is ever more sublime live.
Beautiful piece by Arvo Part and wonderful ballet interpretation of it. Just Magnificent, like any real love story
So beautiful, both of them...
She's perfect, what a beauty !!!
+Lili C ...... Simply beautiful. Sincerely, a retired late night bored host.
I've never seen anything so beautiful...
I returned to this video cos he retired. Sighs, him and Yuan Yuan were amazing partners, so in sync and he's so gentle with her. Seems like all of my favourite dancers are going, Smith and now Daria Klimentova. T.T

All the muscle that belong to that women, I love it!
beautiful - the sun, the water, the choreography, the dancers - just beautiful
They both are beautiful. However, the most beautiful part is the connection between them. It's love!
love this dance Yuan Yuan's body is like a delicate art craft and the music is so comforting
What an adorable piece...
iam crying of joy I love and miss Ballet
My all-time favorite piece of music, danced. By the ocean. At sunset. The film quality is iffy, but being there must have been as close to perfection as life gets.
Thank you so much for sharing this. it moved me to tears. Such beauty and grace. Thank you.
such simple and powerful elegance

Magnifique au delà du réel .... moment suspendu , moment de rêve où l'âme s'élève ... Merci, merci, merci .... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
i cried :( its so beatiful, the way they feel every little tourn, step, every litlle part of the song, just breath taking, I love it
it's unbelievable beautiful dancing!

Beautiful beyond words
Indeed, it is the most beautiful dance I ve ever seen! Both dancers are amazing! She flows with the music .... and he's movements are divine!

So pure, so ephemeral as life itself as love...
IMHO, the best executed performance of After The Rain - and surely the best performance space to perform it. at the end of this dance, you could almost believe that they were in love.
! wish everything could be this nice
Absolutely stunningly performed and filmed. If only we could always dance in the middle of the ocean at sunset!!!

Pure symbiosis.....exquisite
This is the most beautiful thing i have ever seen in my entire life! It is absolutely perfect! Every time i watch it i get an overwhelming feeling inside.
I feel like I walked in on a very private and intimate encounter between two lovers. Flawless!
Das ist, was Tanz wirklich ausmacht : Harmonie, Schönheit und Ausdruck.
Deshalb führen Tänzer keine Kriege!

Great coreography + great dancers = Awesoe Video!!!
Video needed to show them bow. Standing ovation! 👏
She's a Principal Ballerina on SF Ballet. She's amazing.
I know this is 8 years later, but she just recently retired.
And so was he. He was always great to watch.
Beautiful romantic like a poem. Love it
Wow, this is amazingly beautiful. The sunset is a perfect background for this. Thanks so much for posting.

OMG what i wouldn't do to see this live during the sunset. This is beautiful, so gorgeous. I am in love
