Khanpur Dam Parasailing Gone Wrong! I fell into the water!
1. The land of Haro is known for its exceptional beauty and the bliss of life that it offers in the form of River Haro. This beautiful river which irrigates the capital is known for surrounding the valleys of Haripur Hazara and Abbottabad. The beauty of the river is preserved in its crown which is called the Khanpur dam and today occupies a central space when the recreational places of Pakistan are discussed.
2. The project of creating the Khanpur dam was considered at the onset of 1968. The plan was to preserve the water of this enormous river to irrigate the newly constructed city of Islamabad as well as its twin Rawalpindi. Since a part of the Haro, the river falls in the territory of Rawalpindi. The project was completed in 1983 and right after its completion, it was estimated that the dam has a capacity of storing 99,00,000 cubic meters of water in it.
3. Today, the Khanpur Dam which is located on the trajectories of the Haro River in KPK irrigates the land of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and serves as a space of wonder for the blue-green water immersed in its lake which was initially a reservoir.
4. The blue-green water which has attracted tourists on the National and international levels is actually an outcome of an interesting phenomenon. The natural color of the water is blue but during the daytime, when the sun is at its peak and gives its glimmer to the water of the lake, a green appearance mixed with the bluish color of the water gives a very attractive sight to the tourists. This looks like a scene straight from the Amalfi coast of Italy or one of the amazing beaches of Greece.
5. Over the years, the Khanpur dam has successfully managed to bring almost 50,000 tourists on a daily basis. There are various activities that one can enjoy near the lake of which the most interesting ones are paragliding and scuba diving. Various tourists often prefer camping at the site of the water because it appears very serene at different parts of the day.
6. Khanpur Dam is not only known for the alluring colors of its lake but it also serves as an interesting cradle of civilization. We know that it was a part of the Indo-Aryanic tradition that many cities were located at the banks of the river. Haro river is no exception to that. There are samples of history scattered all across the place which now give an open invitation to those who have a penchant for history.
7. Boating has remained a fun activity for many tourists from the past because the water of its lake is a sight to behold. In addition to that, jet skiing is getting fairly popular among tourists who live for the thrill and love to challenge themselves.
8. Haro river accompanies the civilization of Buddhism which is evident from the presence of the Bhamala Stupa Complex. This complex came into the limelight in 2016 when the central stupa was discovered. The specific shape of the Stupa became a mystery for all and from that time it gained a pivotal place to describe power, architecture, and religion.
9. The stupa is said to be a work of art that dates back to the 2nd C.E. The archaeological experts consider it a living wonder because of the uncanny resemblance of the stupa with the Aztec pyramids which indicates a close relationship between the two. Though the stupa represents the reverence toward Buddha in the form of the basic shape of its monastery, there is a peculiar bridge between the pyramids of the Aztec empire and this piece of architecture which tells how one civilization gets inspired by another besides carrying its characteristic heritage.
10. It is one of the most sacred sites of Buddhism located across the world because of the “Maha PariNirvana” statue of Buddha. This 14-meter-long statue is the one which is considered one of its kind because it narrates the history of Buddhism. The statue depicts the event of the death of Buddha which itself is very unique since other stupas don’t possess these intricate details.
11. Maha Pari Nirvana also signifies the presence of a very important religious belief that every soul which takes birth on this earth is going to leave this world and this freedom can be achieved in the form of “Nirvana” or the purity of soul. Since Budhha was the purest soul of the time, it became a sacred site to achieve Nirvana by visiting this site represents Budhha’s purity.
12. Another significant feature noticed over here is the presence of the cruciform statues which belong to different eras of the Gandhara civilization. This portrays that the civilization itself has gone through a passage of change with the changing empires where each emperor added its own color and uniqueness to the main structure of the complex.
