Many thanks for your diligent work. I joined 'Chusan' in the summer of 1961 as a Bellboy, for four Mediterranean cruises and the following Hong Kong voyage. Assigned to the ships Bureau I was the general dogs body and delivery boy for the team of Assistant Pursers. She was also known within the P&O fleet as the 'Happy Ship'.

I remember my late father talking about the Chusan back in the 1960's. He probably saw it in either Penang or Singapore back then. I never saw it myself (I don't think) so it's great to come across this video.

I had a tour around Chusan in a motorboat in Singapore in 1962 - so with me aged 8 she became my favourite liner. Then I saw her frequently in Aden (pronounced Ay-Den :) ) '65-67 - so special memories from my childhood.

Discovered your website quite by accident. A real gem to which I subscribed immediately.
I was absolutely thrilled to find your video on the Chusan. She was a beautiful ship. A proper ship! Lol. With masts, a handsome funnel and a beautiful stern. I sailed on her in late 1961 from Hong Kong to the UK.
I also sailed on the Canton, Oriana and Lloyd Triestino Victoria. 6 line voyages in all. I can hardly describe the thrill for a boy or young man to walk up the passenger gangway to a great white liners on embarkation day. I still remember the wonderful mixture of smells on deck. The smell of the sea, scrubbed teak, brass work, ropes, ships paint etc. Below deck, the delicious aroma from the dining salon permeating the endless corridors of the ship.
I tried to recapture some of that adventure in later life on a couple of massive cruise ships but it wasn't the same.
I will definitely try to get an example of your print of the Chusan. Please keep up your wonderful work and wishing you every success for the future. WFH

My Aunt and her family emigrated to Australia sailing on the CHUSAN in around 1954. My favourite ship was the Orient Liner "ORONSAY" I loved that ship, which brought us out to Australia; landing in Port Melbourne on a rainy Sunday morning 23 April 1961. Our Captain on that voyage was Captain Roberts. My dad was her Chief Engineer in the early 1950s. Thereafter, she became part of the P & O and Orient Line ships, but as the 60s progressed; they changed her colour scheme from a buff hull and white super structure (Buff funnel with a Welsh Bonnet) to an all white ship; the colour scheme of the P & O Line. After the colour change she lost her appeal to me. I watched her comings and goings to Port Melbourne for many years until her final voyage in the 70s. I must say my eyes were moist on that final occasion as I knew I would not be seeing her again; except in a packet of safety razors. I visited many P&O Orient Line ships in the 1950s; Orsova, Orcades, Orion, Otranto. I miss my ships. Thanks for your presentation. I enjoyed it very much. Cheers

G'day Michael, Thank you for the tour of the Chusan and your magnificent drawing of her. This is a ship I'll always regret I missed sailing with; as I knew and met so many people who been passengers and never had a bad word to say about her. They all stressed she was a happy, friendly ship, much more like a smaller vessel where everyone gets to know most other people on-board. Her design was indeed stunning, in an understated way, and you've given Chusan a great tribute through your beautiful drawing.
After looking at all the drawings on your website you have at the moment, I want to buy all of them but we'd have to build more wall space in our home!
Even though I'm a RAAF type, I've always had a strong attraction to good looking ships from cargo vessels to 'tramp steamers' that the likes of Noël Coward and other famous people used to get away on, just so they could be 'anonymous'. But, like most people the big, classic liners of the golden years of Atlantic and Indian Ocean crossings are the pinnacle in 20th Century ship design. Cheers, Mike and thanks again. BH

1:44 As a Sri Lankan, I'm quite fascinated about this information. Its extremely rare to learn much about the maritime history of my country. It just leaves me wondering what other popular vessels of the time might have docked here, considering the fact that it was a British colony back then. Also another ship that I find quite interesting is the HMS Trincomalee, since that's the name of a natural harbor in Sri Lanka.

When I was a young child growing up in Long Beach California, The Queen Mary was brought to the city in 1967 or so. My family had a small cabin cruiser and our parents took us out to the Queen after she'd been docked a few days. We all had our names scribbled on the side, so I imagine when she was painted they just painted right over all the names. She is huge. You dont appreciate it till your next to her, or aboard.

It's amazing to see your ongoing love for P&O for its service of taking your family to down under. Such a simple thing, but you clearly have a love for P&O that some people only get with the likes of White Star Line or Cunard (like myself).
I love these P&O videos, they reveal so much about such a famous yet unknown shipping line. Keep it up. Also, just as a suggestion, could you potentially consider doing a video on the Edmund Fitzgerald? I understand that you mainly focus around ocean-liners (hint: your name) but I would ask you to consider it. Not only is it a very popular sinking, but it's very shrouded and not many people have many clear/ reliable sources from it, but you are reliable. It's all fine if you don't want to though :)

Fantastic drawings and really enjoyable video. I never sailed on the Chusan, but saw her regularly at Tilbury Docks and witnessed many departures and arrivals of her and sister ships, Arcadia, Iberia, Himalaya. That would have been mid to late 1960s when I was in my teens and my interest in merchant ships was at its greatest. I discovered a few years ago that my Great-grandfather served with the Orient Line in the early 1890s as a Quartermaster on the SS Orotava.

Superb, done with passion and attention to detail! Excellent choice of subject too, sadly under represented these days. I remember seeing her at Circular Quay as a kid.
One interesting point with the funnel top- it included a slight coaming with a curved edge which saw the funnel top almost parallel to the deck, I guess to help blow smuts higher (got a shot of it being installed somewhere if you haven't seen it, helps to explain). Basically they trimmed the rake off the funnel top before installing the new cap. The buff P&O used had a hint of orange to it too, a lovely shade.
    Well done!
ps the Iberia was a beautiful looking ship too.

Imperator was a truly beautiful ship. All of those earlier German liners were especially beautiful works of art. It's just sad that the first World War not only saw the deaths of so many young men, but also Albert Ballin, and his visionary liners as they were handed to Cunard, White Star, and the United States Lines as war reparations after the fact.

I'd like you to do Baltic, for intensely personal reasons. Back in 1919-1920, a young man travelled from Europe back to his home to Canada on that ship: Private Stanley Brown, 48th Highlanders of Canada. He would go on to marry, settle down and raise four kids, one of whom would grow up to be my mother.
If when you could tell the tale you could include details of her troopship career, that would be even more fascinating Thanks!

While my dad didn’t serve on Chusan, he did serve on the Strath ships in the late 50’s and early 60’s and Orcades and Orsova. He ended up marrying another English girl already living on a farm outside Melbourne and settled here. By the way wasn’t Chusan the sister ship of Chitral. They ran some sort of joint service. I remember in the 70’s we were going to go on one of those 2 ships when they ran a Sydney-Far East route but we never ended up on it. He’s told me tales of silver service in the dining rooms, the fun he got up to, the port’s.

Cathay was Chitral's sister. Chusan was larger than either. I always thought Chusan was the classiest of the early postwar P&O and Orient ships. I believe Cathay and Chitral replaced the much larger Chusan on the UK-Far East run when Chusan switched to the Australia run and cruising.

If you're open to suggestions on liners to research and perhaps create artwork for, I've got a rather unusual one for you: The SS Seeandbee
Built in 1912, she was a four funnel paddlewheel steamship built for the Cleveland & Buffalo Transit Company, or C&B for short, hence the name. In her heyday she was regarded as one of the most luxurious overnight steamers to ever ply the Great Lakes, and many photos and even some early film footage survive to show her opulent interior spaces, from a sweeping grand atrium to her magnificent aft dining saloon. She truly was a beautiful ship.
Especially noteworthy was her ultimate fate. In 1942, Seeandbee was acquired by the US Navy for a particularly unusual conversion. All of her opulent passenger spaces were stripped off and a new flattop flight deck installed to transform her into USS Wolverine, one of the world's only two paddlewheel aircraft carriers. Based out of Chicago along with USS Sable, ex-SS Greater Buffalo, she was used as a training ship for carrier pilots, allowing them to practice taking off and landing from a ship before going to fight in the Pacific Theater. In this role she was mostly successful, though with some drawbacks; because of her speed of 19 knots, relatively slow for a carrier, she could only launch aircraft in high winds, so if the lake was too calm she couldn't carry out her mission. She also lacked a hangar deck and elevators, so all planes had to be carried on the flight deck. All the same, she served the Navy well until the end of the war, after which, with no further use for such an odd ship, she was sold for scrap in 1947.

I am very sure you get thousands of requests, so, naturally, I have one, too. According to family lore, my grandparents for, their honeymoon, travelled on the Matson Line's SS Lurline in 1934 from December 22-27. Strapped to the deck was a Lockheed Vega owned by Amelia Earhart, who was also on board. The voyage prepared her for the record-breaking Honolulu-to-Oakland solo flight she made in January 1935. My grandmother became very close to Ms. Earhart and they wrote back and forth until Ms. Earhart went missing in 1937. Additionally, the SS Lurline was halfway from Honolulu to San Francisco on December 7, 1941, carrying a record load of 765 passengers, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The ship's alleged reception of radio signals from the Japanese fleet became part of the Pearl Harbor advance-knowledge conspiracy theory. She arrived safely on December 10, traveling in a zigzag path under radio silence and blacked out at night. She soon returned to Hawaii with her Matson sisters, the Mariposa and Monterey, in a convoy laden with troops and supplies. Despite all this, I don't think she is particularly famous to anyone save those in my family. Nevertheless, here on the West Coast, the Matson line is somewhat famous, if only for the Filoli House and Gardens (www.filoli.org), and I think this is one of the more prestigious lines. My grandparents always spoke well of her.

These drawings are amazing. I would love to see you illustrate other types of ships. Lately I've been fascinated by the story of MS München. Maybe draw her or other famous freighters ?

What a wonderful video! I think a video about the differences between the Olympic Sisters would be super (and I reckon it would get a heck of views too). :)
Have you thought about doing some of the Australian coastal liners? Some, like the Zealandia, were stunning ships and rather quirky. The Orungal and Ormiston would be fascinating too- so many quirky details! The John Oxley would also be a great choice, especially considering she's currently being restored to her former glory. Maybe a collab with Sydney Heritage Fleet?
Keep up the great content :)

Radio callsign of the Southern Cross was GSWW. The callsign of her running mate Northern Star was GHZB. The NS had her engines aft and her 2 tall smoke stacks were cross beam, side by side. Quite a different design to the SC.

    Two suggestions.
    1) Please add the deck layouts below the exterior image of the ships. Not just what passengers see but all the decks and all the areas.
    2) Make them interactive on your website. We move the cursor over a part and it at least tells what it is and ideally trivia, photos of the real thing, stories about it by passengers and/or crew, etc.
    Thanks for making this channel!

Do you think cruiseliners are less safe than a modernized 20th century oceanliner? I mean, I guess the cruises avoid open waters and rough seas. But have you ever considered making a video explaining design differences and the limitations of each?
Like, do cruise ships rely on technological advances to stabilize themselves rather than focusing on the things an oceanliner would be better at. If you ever run out of ideas, could one to discuss!

Chusan was not the biggest to go on the Yokohama run. All the P&O Orient liners did the run at some time, often also doing a double or triple run across the pacific to Vancouver, San Francisco, LA and Honolulu.
The only post war, in the early and mid 1960s, P&O ships to do exclusive runs to the far east that I am aware of were the Cathay and Chitral both classic style passenger cargo ships and quite pretty vessels, both far smaller than Chusan.
