      If you going to fit this type insulation you mention I advice for Ireland type of wet weather to sand & paint the wall with damp seal paint if you find it expensive then buy cheap white paint & add mould killer into it very important to do that (always wear goggle and mask) then when it dry stick to the wall plastic sheet the thicker is better then fix the insulated plasterboard trust me will make a big difference. Best luck with that

      hi Paul.i have been applying this render for decades, where the boundary line of an adjacent property i e semi detached ,with this system there is a stop trim that runs from top to bottom that is mechanically fixed and silicone applied. Some firms will return the scrim on a bead, like its a window reveal for example. If there is already a "decorative" finish a lot of care is needed and the trim/bead is applied as near as possible to it.

    Could you consider doing another video which shows how you design around some of the awkward things that one faces with a house, for example satellite TV dish fitting, closing the end of the insulation against an un-insulated semi, and so on? The Welsh Government's evaluation of the technology suggests that it is let down by fitters arriving on site and having to fix problems on the fly. They recommended that sites should be surveyed by a qualified person who would then design solutions to problem items so that the fitting team would come fully prepared. Thus a 'Nighmares we discovered and how to fix them' video would be illuminating.

When my house was done, everything outside the house was taken off, satellite dishes, drain pipes, security lights, alarms, outside taps etc. blocks of wood was fitted to the wall, the same depth of the insulation used and then everything screwed back in to place, but into the wood, not the wall. They did a full prefab ex coal board estate near me. It's crap mate, the depth of the reveals round the windows you could park your car on! And the cut outs for the drain pipes etc look aweful. Plus it's really soft there's only like a hard skin on it....slightest knock and it outs a big hole in it. I was digging out a garden of one of the house with my mini digger, piling the spoil up and a bit of concrete rolled towards house put a great dent in wall...😳 It's not good ...but I guess it's the only way to insulate a prefab house....wattle and dorb would be better...😂😂

    • @paulbrands6239
      @paulbrands6239 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree....after a year the effect of lacking ventilation shows its destructive effect on the internal living space. A pity this is not addressed in this type videos. Unfortunately this problem is hard to solve in old buildings. Again, this type of insulation does reduce the energy bill effectively of course, but the internal build up of humidity that can no longer escape through the walls, causes internal wall paint and wall paper to turn black, grow mushrooms after some time.....

    • @hearthjunkie8173
      @hearthjunkie8173 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paulbrands6239it’s we’ll known that when you insulate a house in this way that humidity is the next problem. So a dehumidifier is needed.

    • @UhOhUmm
      @UhOhUmm ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hearthjunkie8173 if there is a ventilation shaft in the house then simply getting a grill that's more open and leaving the windows on micro-ventilation can do enough to balance out the humidity. The main issue is that some people do not care, if you insulate your house you NEED to buy a thermometer with hygrometer and monitor the humidity in the house, if it's constantly high and improving ventilation doesn't help then you need to get a dehumidifier. Usually dehumidifier isn't required, because in winter the air outside is dryer (because it's cold) and you heat up your house, there is a drying effect and in the summer you usually have AC on (or at least I hope you do if you're renovating the house already).

I notice that they only cut the foam tiles to shape and then fix them using only the mechanical fixings, they don't use any adhesive to secure the foam panels prior to mechanical fixings. What's the advantage of using adhesive and mechanical fixings?

    • @BeConstructiveLTD
      @BeConstructiveLTD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Fire safety - no ventilating behind when bonding as you bond on all the perimeter of the boards trapping any air. Also you then have plaster adhesive at both front and back of the boards.
      2. Loading - both mechanical and bonding produce far superior pull off tolerances to wind etc.
      3. You actually don't use any less basecoat dry fixing because you normally compensate using extra basecoat to get it level.
      4. Bonding first allows you to fix straight, which again gives better structural performance.
      5. Bonding secures the boards to unlevel surfaces much easier.
      6. Bonding gives the system much better change of not cracking in the long run, saving on maintenance costs.
      7. Both bonding and mechanical how the Europeans do it especially in Germany where systems have had longevity 30-40yrs plus. The dry fix method is a British 'cost cutting exercise'

    I am concerned about EWI particularly on masonry structures. Traditionally, British properties have been built with masonry internal and external elements i.e. brick and/or concrete block. This form of construction although it is porous presupposes that the wall can breathe so that external water penetration dries out and any moist air from inside the building flows to the exterior to join that drying process. The wall is expected to have interstitial condensation but this doesn't matter as the drying process takes care of it. With external wall insulation of the type shown the insulation is vapour permeable and thus there will be interstitial condensation behind the render that cannot get out other than having very slow drainage down to the base of the wall insulation, this makes the render susceptible to freeze/thaw and the eventual cracking of the render, which the plastic scrim cannot resist. Also, the strength of the cladding is totally reliant on a thin skim of render on a compressible underlayer and thus it will not resist the normal dents and dings that a building receives over its lifetime. Breaking the surface of the render will allow water penetration and eventually blowing due to the freeze thaw cycles.
    My daughter had this type of insulated render fixed to her 1930's solid walled semi-d house and the immediate issues were with external services i.e. electric boxes and garden taps along with fixing for brackets on the wall face. The fixing base was some 60mm back from the face of the wall and the extension of the garden tap in particular lasted only a few weeks before it began to leak, saturating the insulation and eventually creating a puddle on the ground. The installation company had to cut out the damaged section, fix the leak and reinforce the water service extension, reform the wall insulation and patch an area of render Had this happened outside of the warranty period the cost would have been £100s. Fortunately, my daughter sees the wall insulation as a sales bonus and takes the view that any future defects will the new owner's problem!

      Wall is dead, it doesnt breathe. Humidity diffusion through wall is negligible. 97% of vapour leaves the house through ventilation or recuperation. Lastly polystyrene is not vapour tight, and still allows minimal diffusion. Dew point MUST NOT be inside the wall, the thickness of the insulation must be calculated to move it outwards to the insulation which will permeate it outside. All the issues you describe are just jobs done wrong.

      @@1amelka I don't doubt that it is used elsewhere but UK has specific conditions that mean we need specific solutions. Our climate is very damp and our older buildings are very porous that relies on migration of water vapour from inside to out. I have specified render on many buildings and if spec'd and installed right it can last for decades and probably the life of the building. One building I was concerned with had stucco render (lookalike stone jointing) that had been insitu with no obvious repairs for 350 years

      @@1amelka The climate has a profound effect on the architecture and construction that is appropriate, just look at the vernacular construction around the World. I wonder how long a mud brick house from the Middle East would last in Ireland or the Rainforest of the Amazon?
      The point with most EWI installations is that they are used on our stock of solid brick walled terraced and semi-detached houses to supposedly improve their insulation as a quick fix without understanding how the basic construction functions, its a case of inappropriate installation, although I also suspect that there are too many lowly qualified installers trying to make a fast buck on the back of the latest fad.
      Ventilation is not necessarily the cure for a damp and humid environment. In the houses I am describing they aren't damp or humid in their original state but the location of EWI promotes interstitial condensation and that allied to modern lifestyles and heating systems can create RH values that the wall cannot cope with.

      I’m no expert in this kind of insulation. However what I would say is I can only see this external insulation being any good if your house has solid walls. If you have a cavity wall then frankly I can’t see this insulation being of any help. However I’m happy to be corrected if someone can be explained the benefits.

    • @siriosstar4789

      What , of no help ? ridiculous .
      if the interior walls have open cavities and the new insulation creates air tightness in the walls then the cavity becomes a dead air space . not as effective as insulation but still very good .
      The biggest source of heat loss in any house is air infiltration . this system accomplishes both , eliminating air movement through the walls and insulation simultaneously .

      Dropdown Verge Trim is designed to go under sills, soffit boards and applications that require fixing from below. This Verge Trim is available in various different widths to house different thicknesses of insulation. The Dropdown Verge Trim effectively ensures that water falls away from the system but minimises the requirement of expanding foam tape and/or a silicone sealant to ensure it is completely watertight.

    • @peter_cuthbert

      Damp and mould inside a building could well be down to poor ventilation. Assuming that it is not damp coming through a solid wall, I think you would be advised to look into mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. That will stop the condensation, dry out the inside of the house and because it re-cycles the heat from the outgoing air, lower your energy use. However this will not be an instant solution. Our house took a good couple of years to dry out and stop being musty. Of course, for best efficiency the house needs to be as air tight as possible so that the ventilation you get is controlled not random.

    Occupants breath out about 1/3 tonne of water a year into the property. This will absorb into the walls and where the wall is breathable eventually migrate to outside. Four people in the house and you are looking at around 1 1/4 tonnes. Cooker hoods that do not vent outside and poor ventilation can make matters significantly worse. How is this system going to stop the fabric of the building slowly decaying to a brown crumbly mess?
