  • Have you ever wondered whether it's possible to do flourishing with a fountain pen? Here's a tutorial / show and tell on how to replace a Jinhao x750 fountain pen nib with a Zebra G! Then I write some Spencerian and do some offhand flourishing to test out how it is.

    This tutorial was perfect! Thank you! With a good understanding of metallurgy I'm going to experiment a bit with the handful of cheapo pens I've got.

    For everyone trying this! You have to flatten the curve of the zebra g tip before you try to put it back. Mine got stuck, because I didn't and I had to break the tip to get the feed out again.

      I'm glad I bought the "Five Pack" of X750's. I'll try that with another conversion and then compare results. Five pretty solid fountain pens for UNDER $20...I'm not going to waste my breath complaining about skipping the flattening step. :D

      Hi Simon. What do you mean? I'm having problems to let the ink flow to the nib and I don't know if what you say is related to this issue. I have also tried to remove the nib and it's also impossible.

      Hola. Lo que dices es cierto. Pero Yo opté por pulir el feed y profundizar el canal, tal y como recomiendan en este video, y me funcionó perfectamente. th-cam.com/video/sS5G7sIOKF0/w-d-xo.html . pero esto fue después de dañar un feed y al menos 5 Zebra G nibs.

    • @Tome4kkkk
      @Tome4kkkk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoVegan It may very well be related. The nib's cross curvature has to match the feed's curvature. If it doesn't, you may get a gap between the feed'channel and the nib's slith.

    The flame is to prep the nib. They come with an oily coating to avoid rusting in storage and transport. So in order for the ink to flow correctly on them they have to be prepped. A flame is an easy way to remove that oil. This is a great idea that I can't wait to try.

    Does the jinhao's cartridge ink flows well with the zebra G nib???

  • @MummyBrown
    @MummyBrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The flow on yours is AMAZING. I can't get it to work so well for me. Might you be able to suggest some factors that might help with ease flow? Right now I'm practicing on a Kanso Noto notebook (Tamoe River paper) and that seems to help greatly. I'm using a noodler's brand ink, maybe that's a factor.
    Might you suggest some inks that might make the experience a little more "flow friendly?"

    Maybe they've changed the size of the feed or something in the Jinhao pens since you made this, but I bought a set of five x750 pens to do this, and there's no way I'd have been able to just simply replace one nib with the other without seriously re-shaping the Zebra G nib. I have to use pliers or something similar to flatten it out, or the nib will get stuck about 5mm in.
    Anyway, beautiful writing, and a very nice video to watch. Thanks!

    Where did you get the Number 6 G Nib?
    Every other video I've seen putting a G nib on a pen that uses a Number 6 nub and feed (like the Jinhao x450, X750, 159, and a few others) required spreading the G nib's sides to fit the larger diameter feed.
    You didn't have to do that, so have to have a size 6 G nib.

  • @notconvincedgranny6573
    @notconvincedgranny6573 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    It's the feed, not the buffer.

    • @sdovas
      @sdovas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      notconvincedgranny
      ... And that's also the biggest problem with this arrangement, which have tried myself also using the 750, and it's just that the quality control at Jinhao is not very good and sometimes you get a feed that works really well, like yours seems to, and sometimes you get a feed that sputters and chokes and can't keep up with the flow that a nice soft crowquill point requires.
      And then of course in my case it's that I just don't like the zebra G nib. I prefer a hunt 102 but I can't put that on any fountain pen so I tried this, and I will try a few Gillot's and other Hunt/Speedball points that are only half round and see if I can find another number 6 that fits better.
      And of course, the converter on the gin how is nothing compared to finding a pen that you can do this with which you can eye dropper fill... If only the nib on the $20 Noodlers Ahab were as fine and flexible as the Zebra...

    Super sharp tip dug into the page and got stuck then flicked ink EVERYWHERE.

    • @nabeelahali4651
      @nabeelahali4651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're using a Zebra G, it has a coating from the manufacturer to prevent it from rusting, so you should briefly pass your nib through a flame (like from a match) to remove the coating. You can also brush the nib with a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove the coating.

  • @josepmariaaguascaribot9239

    The only problem, imo, with the 'Zebra G' calligraphyc nib is that scratch a little.

  • @geckonia

    Love your calligraphy so much! I did the same w my Jinhao. I found I needed to squish the roundness of the nib a bit to get it to fit. It seems to work well with my Noodler's Konrad too. You can heat set the feed (for a snug fit to the nib) and deepen the channel for increased flow.

    • @TinyOryx
      @TinyOryx  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, are you using a Zebra G or another G nib? For me the Zebra fits perfectly but the Nikko is a slightly different shape so needs squishing. I wasn't familiar with heat setting the feed - but I just watched the Goulet Pens video on it - super interesting.

    • @geckonia
      @geckonia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Zebra G. I got it good and stuck first time I put it in my Jinhao. I just got some Titanium G nobs to try and really like those! They feel a bit softer and more fluid.

    • @TinyOryx
      @TinyOryx  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @margessw
      @margessw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heat setting is suppose to work on ebonite feed (because of the characteristics of ebonite). But, I've tried to heat set my Jinhao X750 and the gap in between the nib and the feed, was really minimized.

    Don't put the nib to the flame! It just doesn't do nothing, except that the nib will erode faster with some types of inks. It's completely unnecessary and senseless.

      I think the POINT is to show how a fountain pen can be converted to use a flex pen point. Most fountain pens designed with a flex point either don't flex much (Noodler's Ahab) OR are VERY expensive. Why the testy criticism?
