  • I've wanted a disc cooker for a long time, but I didn't want to carry around a propane tank, so I built one that runs on woods. With just a handful of sticks and your favorite ingredients, you've got dinner for your whole family. If you like this rocket stove, you can get one here: www.42fab.com

    i built my own rocket stove out of large square tubing, well still not completely done yet, but have test fired it. Didnt even think of coating it in cooking oil to season it. nice build my man, the hand formed leg work is the crowning touch!

    Great video!! Never seen anybody season a stove like that!
    Absolutely love your welding gloves!! I got a pair very similar to yours! There great!! Washable, will last a life time, and self mending!
    What to cook: tacos!!!

    Awesome project! I'll say from experience you'll probably want a smoother finish on the Wok for non-stick reasons. Just an idea but of you fill it with vinegar to dissolve any embedded rust then DA it down as smooth as patience allows it will be much more enjoyable. Definitely plan on making one of these for myself.

      +Mike O'Barr I think you're right Mike. More then likely going to have to get a new disk.

      No need really, just put some oil in there and let it season like you would a cast iron pan It'll make it's own nice smooth carbon coating.
      Edit: Okay after seeing it at the very end.... Yeah you do need another piece of steel, that thing is pretty pitted

      or bend the arms to accept a regular wok. Some anchors for the legs to lock them down too. Still the most cooking surface of a typical rocket stove design yet.

    Nice job, I've got a disc cooker I made and love it. Agree on the smoother finish. You can cook so much on this thing, you'll be impressed. Anything you've seen cooked in a wok is fair game, but don't stop there. Disc cookers are popular in Central/South America, South Africa, Australia so plenty of recipes to be found. You need a wide and deep lid of some kind. I bought a stainless steel mixing bowl and made a handle out of a magnet and wooden knob. Means you can remove the handle and it's still a large bowl. With a lid you can really control the heat well and it opens up a lot of different things you can cook. Steam baking is also a big hit. Cinnamon rolls, biscuits, steamed corn on the cob, veggies. Thick cuts of meat can be tricky. Don't attach the disc to the stand. If you ever use it on uneven ground being able to position the disc is handy. Good luck.

Here it is 10:45 Pm and was about to go off to bed and thought I would check my emails one more time. Glad I did, as this was the greatest. You sure have found your calling, as this is yet another great video. Thanks for sharing...Ken the 80 year old guy out in Marina CA.

    What a brilliant idea!! One of my most memorable meals with some South American missionary friends of ours was from what they called a “Discada”. Virtually the same but propane powered. I love your idea incorporating the rocket stove!!

    Suggestion. When you let off the trigger on the MIG the gas flows for a few more seconds to keep oxygen off the weld until it is below a temperature for oxidizing. Keep the cup right there for a 3 count before you lift away.

  • @theinkbrain
    @theinkbrain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This thing ought to win some high-class design prize.I would respectfully suggest that you start over with seasoning the wok. First scrub it clean, then let it get real hot and last of all add the oil. If the metal was smoother I would have suggested a thin layer of oil rubbed on with a rag or paper towel. I think you might run into a few difficulties with oil settling down in the pits.

    First time I've seen cooking oil used on the stove itself to season it, so have two here ready for spraying with high temp paint but going to use your method with the oil and check the finish, if finish is good it will save me £'s for i go threw a lot of tins of the htp. Loved your video man.

    You should cook Carne Asada! Considering my in-laws are from New Mexico, you should make it with Hatch Red Chile! My in-laws live not to far from Lindale in Quitman, TX and I have been to the Old Mill Pond before once or twice. I cannot wait to make a trip to visit and stop by to see everything you've done since taking over curator-ship! I seriously love what I see when I watch your videos and I love the passion you bring to it! Makes me want to get out there and start projects of my own.

    See similar 'skottels' here in South Africa used frequently. Three horseshoes welded to the harrow dish and a foot of handle welded upright into the centre hole. You might want to grind out the pitting, cure it with oil or fat and cook about anything on it with a quite small fire under it. From a full farm breakfast via stirfry to burgers, sausage and steak.
