    As a fellow Hexar RF lover and multiple time owner, one bit of advice for longevity is to apply some glue or loc-tite to the piece of glass that screws into the eyepiece.
    Mine fell out when I was in NYC last year, and it's been nearly impossible to find a replacement because this seems to happen to a lot of RF users. I'm even searching for as-is Hexars on ebay just to get the eyepiece, and I'm coming up empty.
    Love the review! It's a phenomenal camera, and I think it's the best M-mount camera ever made.

    I'm completely with you on having practical features on a 35mm camera (most importantly aperture priority). I have the Zeiss Ikon. One advantage of the Zeiss is that Zeiss still services/repairs those cameras. Turnaround time was ~1month for mine.

    Your video here inspired me to take my Konica Hexar AF out of retirement (about 20 years at this point). It is my favorite lifetime camera, but I sold out to digital when I bought the Leica Digilux-2 and never looked back. The Hexar seems to be working well with a new battery and fresh film. Time will tell once film is developed.

    Hi Sean. Congrats on joining the Konica Hexar RF user club. I personally own two of those one is the all titanium style limited release the other one is a black one like yours. I always enjoyed shoting film with a 'LEICA M7 clone' plus automated film advance. But there is something i need to share with you. The electronic shutter will die just one day to another with no reson or even abuse. Only a few retired KONICA repair men in the city of Tokyo have a limited stock in parts and the skills to fix this defect. So again enjoy as long as you can. Regards

    I love this camera and use it as my main 35mm. My only complaint is the location of the strap lugs causes the camera to tilt backwards when a smaller lens is on it rather than hanging flat. It just makes it a little less pleasant to carry. I also frequently, use it with the 35 mm Ultron v2 and it sure creates nice images…meter tends to be spot.
    I did have an issue where the camera started thinking the film door was open mid roll and then would reset the counter to zero and advance three frames. I would lose my count and lose some images in the middle of the roll. I was able to do an easy DIY fix putting some oil in the sensor that detects the door. Was glad I didn’t have to send it to Japan.

I got such a good deal on mine that I couldn’t pass it up. The only issue I had was that the rangefinder was misaligned. I'm very happy with my Voigtlander Bessa R. It uses Leica thread mount (LTM) or L39 lenses, which are a lot more affordable than M mount lenses. I especially love the bright viewfinder, which is the best I've ever used. Build quality isn't up there with Leica or Konica, but it was affordable for me when I got it a few years ago.

    If you want a really good rf camera that does not cost a lot give the Yashica Gsn or Gtn a try. The exposures are amazing while it is not on the level of this camera and does not offer interchangeable lenses it is a great starting point with a really good aperture priority system. A nice one usually goes for about 50 dollars. You do need to get the proper battery and adapter because the mercury batteries are no longer made. This was my first camera and is still my favorite.

    I’ve long felt (known) that Konica cameras weren’t grossly underrated. Forgot entirely about this camera but now, you’re reminding me of just great they are. I inherited a Konica Autoreflex T dons ago: amazing glass, almost bullet proof. But hey, Nikon literally gave away cameras to journalists in the 60s/70s to garner devotees. But I’d defy anyone to convince me the Konica was every bit as good. And thus the Hexar: awesome

    The Hexar RF is probably the highest quality, most sophisticated 35mm cameras ever made (Including Leica). Konica also made a line of lenses specifically for the camera, which are as fine as any. The Cosina Bessa and all the rebrands thereof mentioned in the video are nice, but they are a totally lesser class as to both design and quality. After the cameras were out for a few years, a rumor started circulating to the effect that while using the Leica M-mount, the Konica Hexar RF did not have quite the specified lens to film spacing, so Leica lenses other than wide angle units (covered by depth of field) would not focus accurately. That claim made the rounds for several years, after which someone killed it by publishing a long explanation that Konica and Leitz use a slightly different method of measuring that specification, i.e., that there was in fact no function difference between the Konica M and Leitz M-mounts.

  • @zerixos
    @zerixos 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You glanced over the fact that a Leica M6 also works without a battery. Not only makes it repairing it cheaper, (you dont have to salvage an other camera for electronics) but it also works when the battery dies. Sure you can bring more battery's with you (with an electronic camera you should) but the M6 is alsmost uses no battery power and you can do months (if not years) on just a single battery.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely, but I don’t think it’s a worthwhile argument beyond the larger electronic vs. mechanical debate which has many factors included.
      The Konica battery lasts for 100 rolls so while that’s true, it’s hardly an issue.
      It does stand true though that if the camera breaks, it’s doneskies. Praying it doesn’t 😂

    • @zerixos
      @zerixos 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A analog camera from the early 00's should be good for many more years. 100 rolls is also a lot of frames but I would be anxious not having a spair one on me when I need it, but the CR2 batteries are small enough to have 2 spares in your bag anyway. May it serve you many great moments!

      I have heard great things about the Minolta CLE/Leica CL (I believe it’s the same camera correct?). Looks like a fun little camera to shoot with.
      This was in the running for me as well but I didn’t want to hold back so I went for the Konica which is a bit more premium.
      As long as you can make sure the light meter is working and you can get one for a good price I’d say give it a go. You can always resell it

    • @marlenelandstravels
      @marlenelandstravels 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I think it has the same mechanics of the leica something like that, same company haha. It’s £400 in the UK. I’m in Vietnam right now, the best place to find and develop cheap (but great quality) film photography deals, so I’ll hunt it down! I also want to make films photography videos but when I see the masterpieces of Graincheck, grainydays and all that crew, I cannot measure up to that production quality 😅. I do want to get out of pure travel vlogs tho. So you should do more of these, they are inspiring! 😊

      Don’t worry about competing, just start sharing and you’ll get better! Everyone has their own voice, just gotta find yours.

    but isn't the "Hexar" lens which really makes this camera, just asking, no flames

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think so as the image quality between any 35mm rangefinder is exactly the same, the lens is what makes the image unique. So the lenses have nothing to do with the camera in a sense.
      The bodies all just have different features that effect the shooting experience but not the image (max shutter, manual vs electronic, auto focus, etc)
      The Hexar lenses are very good, but so are they Leica lenses. Hoping to pickup the 28mm Hexar at some point

  • @kiwipics
    @kiwipics 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Unfortunately the Hexar is a potentially expensive brick along with the Contax T2 and Hasselblad Xpan, and in fact any film camera that is fully electronic (just like my Canon EOS1) .. The only bonus are the lenses.
    A lovely camera, but is it worth the risk ?
