History
Popeye is a platform game developed and released by Nintendo as an arcade video game in 1982. It was based on the comic strip of the same name created by E. C. Segar and licensed from King Features Syndicate. The game was later ported to several popular home consoles including the Atari 2600. The Atari version was developed by Nintendo and published by Parker Brothers in 1983. Some sources claim that Ikegami Tsushinki also did design work on the game.
Scenario
In Popeye, you play as the titular character, Popeye the Sailor. Your goal is to win Olive Oyl's affection by catching all of her hearts, notes, or "Xs" (smooches!) before they hit the water and sink. You must avoid various obstacles while doing so. Brutus, who is wandering around the screen, is constantly trying to catch Popeye. If you collect a can of spinach, you can temporarily knock Brutus out, otherwise, Brutus will knock Popeye out. Additionally, other objects such as bottles or birds fly around the screen and will cause you to lose a life if hit. Each level has a different layout of platforms and ladders, and features different items that float towards the bottom of the screen⁶.
How to Play?
You'll start the game with 4 Popeyes. The first Popeye will appear on the left, topmost ledge as soon as you hit the FIRE button or the RESET switch. In each round, Popeye must win Olive Oyl's affection by catching all of her hearts, notes, or Xs, depending on which round you're playing.
