I like very much Brahms, and I' m going to play this beautiful piece tonight at my concert. As violist i ' m very lucky to have the opportunity to play this gorgeous creation by one of the famous composer of all the time
I just got back from a Zukerman/Bronfman concert at the Chan Centre in Vancouver. What a dynamite afternoon. This piece was their third and was brilliant. "Aimez-vous Brahms?" "Oh, oui!"
The two Op. 120 Sonatas were originally composed for the clarinet and were dedicated to Richard Mühlfeld of Meiningen, a clarinetist whose beautiful tone Brahms so admired.

the viola version is from brahms, so, its original too
yes i love Brahms and exquisite piece of music, time, thank God 100 yre.later i can hear it as if was yesturday. the internet is great specially for me u tube,i can listen and connect other people that love music instantly to this beautiful music.
Sorry to disappoint you, but it was just one of his clarinetist friend who asked him to transpose it for viola because he was also a viola amateur, but Brahms didn't like the Viola transcription. I'm a violist so no bullshit, just sadness :( But they're still amazing !
Maybe they just can't face transposing into the ridiculous Alto clef. Not your fault, I know, but what is wrong with tenor clef, or an equivalent octave up from bass clef, or a clef one string (ie a 5th) below treble so the finger positions match violin reading treble ?
@@christopherwebb3627 reading and transposing between clefs is anything, but not difficult if you actually have studied music. It can be just matter of the editor in the case of simple transposition, but in the case of arrangement, there are more complex things to consider.
It was, and Brahms rewrote it for viola so quickly that he didn't bother to really consider the instrument change in every section and as a result, it's really more virtuosic on viola, in my opinion. (I don't play clarinet, though, so I'm willing to hear another side to that!)
Even with Hindemith, Shostakovich, Rebecca Clarke, Bohuslav Martinu, and Bartok, I still believe both of Brahms' Sonatas sounds the best. Just my opinion though. They're all still fun to play and up there on my list.
intervalkid Considering Brahms only lived to the age of 64 (1833-1897), he's probably not nearly 80, but I agree, the beard probably makes him look older than he is.
I meant only that he has absolutely no wrinkles whatsoever. I'm 41 and my forehead has lines and my cheeks have lines around the nose and I look alot younger than most!
How are Brahms' slow movements so universally astonishing? Simply astounding ....
I feel the second movement is just so celestial
This is one of the greatest pieces ever written imo.
It's the 'lullaby' quality I think. Bach has that quality too

I. Allegro appassionato ~ 00:00
II. Andante un poco Adagio ~ 7:42
III. Allegretto grazioso ~ 13:23
IV. Vivace ~ 17:44
ling ling 40 hours
How dare you listen to viola?!
Oh well, I guess I play it AND watch TwoSet so you're probably safe.
אני יודע שזה כלי נוצרי לא חידשת לי אני לא שייקספיר הפד.
7:42 andante con poco adagio
13:23 allegretto grazioso
17:44 vivace
1-. Allegro appassionato.
I wash myself in tears with this recording of the second movement seriously, so damn beautiful... There's no words to describe such magic
Exactly.
In love with the second movement and the dialogue between the viola and piano in the 3rd... I hope to play this on my own viola one day

Best I have ever heard, gorgeous phrasing and complete control of all the little things that make music work.

Beautiful! My mother and father used to play this. (Donald and Mary Jane Sandford)

love the first movement , its my goal for viola
So it would appear that Brahms composed only two sonatas for this most beautiful instrument, but then...let's be thankful for that...THANK YOU!!....

Same here. The instrument sounds so nice, don't know why all these composers loathe us(violist)
Trying to compose something of mine for that instrument. But Ennio Morricone composed for Viola and Orchestra in his Soundtrack for Marco Polo.

I'm going to play this on clarinet but I'll say it sounds better with viola.
It is true, but the sonata No 2 sounds better on the clarinet... :)
Joao Paulo Machado It was originally composed for clarinet.
Ok. I was just stating my preference. Thanks for the info. :)
Oh. My bad haha

Such a gorgeous performance!
Romantisch Iconic Legénd Genius Brahms 👍👍❤️❤️✅
This is like... the only really good viola piece. Being a violist, I really appreciate great works like this for viola.
and a serious piano part-- not just an accompaniment.
you should listen to glinka's viola sonata in D minor
you've never listened to anything by Hindemith, then, I guess? Let alone Shostakovich's viola concerto?
Even with Hindemith, Shostakovich, Rebecca Clarke, Bohuslav Martinu, and Bartok, I still believe both of Brahms' Sonatas sounds the best. Just my opinion though. They're all still fun to play and up there on my list.
Shosty wrote a viola concerto?

All in all, one scrumptious musical pizza!
I think that you are taking the...pizza. Isn’t it windy? No it’s Thursday now shut gob and put the kettle on.
Dashing fella old Brahms.
But alas, liver cancer at the Red Hedgehog.
"Like" on 23 MArch 2016, just before bedtime
Brahms looks like he could pass for 40 without that beard. How old is he in that picture, nearly 80?

jaja el barbas siempre se la rifa
Looks like Ernest Hemingway
My favourite Brahm's sonata. It's such a shame that classical "music" today is like many other modern artworks - useless junk.
+Candida Crusher Melody has come and gone
Just because you don't have the mental capacity to explore modern classical music doesn't mean that it's bad
Indeed. 20 percent of my playlist is non-Rachmaninov post-Mahler ...
@Candida Crusher
I used to think like that. I recommend checking out the works of Nikolai Medtner
