My husband and I live with one dog and one cat in our 64sqm bach (old beach house) and once he started working from home, it felt VERY small. We were fortunate to have the capacity to add a small studio to the garden, to serve as his home office, and also tweaked the kitchen design, so it feels a lot better now 🥰 But the living space in particular, and the two bedrooms are quite petite. We're getting good at developing storage solutions and have got rid of a lot of stuff! The apartment in this video does look really spacious, thanks to simple interior design and fairly minimalist owners, but it probably doesn't feel that big when you're there full time.
Appartments in Northen Europe are bigger than in the south...logic...long and cold/rainy winters...60squ meters in Italy is big, but not as such in Scandinavia,
@@chloeuntrau4588Idk, the housing market in cities like Stockholm and Oslo make it so it’s difficult to find any apartment, much less a bigger one. I live in a student 21 sqm, but there are of course bigger ones here and there. Still wouldn’t call 60 sqm small
It's nice to see an NTS feature on a place where minimal intervention in the original layout has been made, yet a real transformation in look and feel is achieved. Also, it's clear that there is lots of room for furnishings to evolve as lives and tastes change. Bravo!
I love how bright and spacious this apartment is and how they kept some textures (like the brick in the hallway) intact. This home is functional and comfortable. I would totally live here. The bookshelf, reading nooks, bird feeder, pine wood, and the little stove fireplace are right up my alley. It's wonderful!
I love that there is an enormous bookshelf and reading lamps and she was knitting or crocheting, so craft storage must be somewhere too! Yay! And the fireplace … it just has everything i love💝
Absolutely loved the fact that you thought of and built everything yourself and, some features, with the skilled help of your father. And how precious and unexpected nowadays: minute 09:57, the remembrance of our older generations and of those before us: "the apartment used to be two units, each probably housing 4 to 5 people at the most. And it is worth remembering that what we might consider a small space today, would be spacious for the people who lived here 150 years ago." Grateful for your testimony.
Why is everyone hating the washing machine in the bedroom so much? It seems like the logical choice given the limitations of the existing layout. The shower/bathroom was tight. And having extra storage + a dishwasher is invaluable for the kitchen if you cook/use it regularly. The bedroom is simply a closed off sleeping space, and the plus is that you can close it off during the day when you're working, entertaining, or otherwise occupying the rest of the apartment. With the solid door and brick walls, it likely keeps the noise well insulated from the rest of the apartment as well.
I think it is SO clever to have the washer/dryer where you hang your clothes. How easy to take things out and hang them right up! It makes no sense to have a combo like this in a kitchen or a basement.
The wm there is ok, but the whole wardrobe concept looks crammed, not nice and those uppwer drawers not so funcional. They could reorganize it and install a curtain rod that does a better job.
Seeing this video was perfect timing. I love how the couple appreciated the original wall and floor materials! Beautifully done. Also, not crowding the floor space with a lot of unnecessary furniture. Well done!
Huge fan of Scandinavian lightness of spaces - light colored materials (wood), to minimalist decor. The double sided cushion on the living room bench was such a clever idea to allow for a change decor. The whole place felt light and airy. Really nice.
Not having any comfortable furniture in a fairly large apartment is just weird. My scoliosis could never. I do love that they kept the perfectly fine (old-ish) bathroom tiles and their Birkenstocks with socks combo. Also the kitchen is lovely.
Cozy. The wood stove is practical and beautiful. Love the open kitchen/living area. The fabric around the closet in the cozy bedroom was a smart choice.
i came to the comments just because of her last sound bite. remembering these were cramped for the folks that used to live in them puts a lot into perspective because it's easy to forget.
Love the fire place, that's very cozy. The entire apartment has cabin vibes, very lovely. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the bedroom storage and washing machine, feels unfinished, a simple wardrobe in there and the washing machine could have easily been fitted in the kitchen area. This size of an appartment for 2 people is more than plenty and you also have room for having people over. Appreciating the lack of TV, too many people are focusing on having space for a big screen.
I don't quite know how I feel about this one. I mean I kind of agree that with someone that said that it lacks "warm" and it's a bit strange to say because everything individually its no that bad. I think they just decorated the existing flat, opting for simple furniture. To me it looks like a big DIY project. The large bench is a good idea but for some reason it looks so odd and flat against that wall. Like it belongs in a some kids bedroom and not in a living room. On the other hand the place do feels spacious and bright which is nice. It could be a great place to receive clients and have an office/home.
That giant bench is just EXQUISITE. Using the smaller (original) bedroom as the bedroom was both brave and genius. It's clear massive thought went into this place. Perfection.
I appreciate that they at least acknowledged that this is not truly “small” if you consider how people would have lived in it in the past, as well as how many people live “small” not out of choice but by necessity. Class is not usually a part of the wider conversation in design spaces. These folks are clearly affluent enough to be able to buy an apartment in Oslo. I love the choices they made.
In general, the furniture and the chosen colors are compatible. The washing machine should be placed somewhere else in the house or it should be separated as a small area with a hard material instead of curtains in the existing area, it should not have been in the bedroom.
I like a lot of things in this apartment but the 'office' confuses me. What makes it an office? A thin strip of wood facing the wall you can perch your laptop on? I know I'd last about half an hour and then I'd go and work from the dining table where there's a lot more room.
Lovely. The only change I would have made is putting the washing machine in the kitchen. There’s plenty of wall space to relocate some of the items under the kitchen bench and that would create space to house the washing machine.
@djeezeschristonabike i love this channel with all my heart but sometimes it's a one sentence missing in the owners introduction "we are young couple of out of system designers, we love living small and minimalistic life far from the consumptionism, we like slow life and received 1M EURO from our parents to buy this apartment"
LOL!!! "Never Too Small." My wife and I live in a 67 m² apartment in Jessheim, about 50 kilometers from Oslo. The apartment has two bedrooms, a large bathroom, a storage room, a hallway, a spacious living room, and a separate "U-shaped" kitchen tucked away from the main area. I’ve drawn up the renovation plans myself (I’m a civil engineer), and the renovation is set to begin in the spring. Once finished, the apartment will have three bedrooms. But not the tiny 2x2m "bedrooms" you often see-these will be proper, spacious rooms for sleeping and kids' activities. We won’t lose any space in the living room, and the kitchen will only be shortened by about 40 cm, keeping its "U-shape" and allowing for a 150 cm diameter circle to fit comfortably inside. The master bedroom will be reduced by 40 cm, making its dimensions 2.8 m x 3.8 m. The other two bedrooms will be 2.4 m x 3.2 m each. The current indoor storage room will be converted into a bathroom, reduced to 2 m x 1.6 m. Since all the walls here are made of wooden constructions, I’ll set up my workspace in the hallway. It will include a foldable desk that can be hidden inside the wall, along with the monitors. 60 m² is FAR from being a small space-at least from the perspective of someone who’s 190 cm tall and weighs 120 kg. Anything under 30, maybe 35 m², could be considered a small space. Don’t get me wrong, the apartment is beautiful, and they did a great job, but I think the video was posted on the wrong channel. "Never Too Small."
It's unusual but I guess if it's not disturbing anyone's sleep it's not really a problem. I think some of the newer washing machines are very quiet, or of course perhaps they just don't run it while they're trying to sleep. She also mentioned having a drying rack in the bedroom curtain-closet so I'm going to guess another reason for putting it there was to avoid having clothes drying out in the common areas of the apartment. Totally makes sense, I wouldn't want guests to see all my undies drying 😂
@alisonc6100 actually they have everyting there ( closet, hamper, washing machine and drying wrack ) because that way they dont have to carry laundry anywhere, also since the apartment is heated there is no humidity from the drying clothes. Once there done just foldem and put them in there place, its actually very time and space saving, also energy saving since we as human also spend energy whit our bodies 😉❤️
I don’t like the idea with washing machine in the bedroom. Seriously it’s wrong place for that. The smell, the noise, the humidity 😳. The sofa in living room is not cozy at all, looks like beds in the dorm or hostel. There is so much space to do it more functional, but they wasted. Corner with fireplace is very cute and cozy.
AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL! I love the way you incorporated, emphasized and cherished the existing elements of this awesome apartment! The wooden floors and the brick wall! The plywood woodwork in the space is professional! I love the pop of colors you have chosen. You have managed to create a space that looks and feels 120sm big! ENJOY YOUR WORK OF LOVE AND INSPIRATION !
My opinion Personally I would’ve done this space completely different. So much space to make the bathroom bigger, Kitchen and living utilizing the tall walls for extra storage, made the living have a big comfy couch with an entertainment area, the office room doesn’t have to be that big and make a Murphy style bed, and the main bedroom bigger with a floor to ceiling closet space along the big wall. Aesthetic is cute but so much wasted space for me.
You're welcome to kit out your own small space and invite the channel to do a story on you! 😊 All these benches as sofas have me envious of those without back issues needing all seating to have decent back support. It is lovely to be young and not have accumulated so much stuff that using the smallest bedroom is adequate and keeping the bigger bedroom mostly empty is fine for now! 😂
Love the handmade aspect and cleanlines. But these people must eat out all the time. Where is the food stored, where are the dishes, glases, cutlery? Love the bookcase, and the long table in front of the window is heaven! Makes no sense to me to have a laundry in the bedroom, when you have a HUGE living room. The bedroom seems cramped and, forgive me, lifeless.
I doubt they eat out all the time:P in norway that is ridiculously expensive:P but they do live in oslo so they can probably manage with dropping by the store several times a week without storing a shit ton of food:P
At first I loved the apartment, I found it inspiring, with its really airy and spacious feeling (after all, as mentioned by many, with 60 square meters it is not small). However, given the taste and feeling for brilliant solutions the owners have shown, the fact that they placed the washing machine in the bedroom, in a closet of sort, totally killed it for me. Really? To sleep in the same room where the washing machine is? Would anyone ever really want this??
Nice vibes and aesthetic, but I don't know if it's the most intelligent use of space. Not a huge fan of the washer in the bedroom or the random desk-nook for making phone calls and scribbling lol
I have some questions regarding the decision to have wooden floors in the kitchen. It's pretty, but looks difficult to clean in case of spillage and the likes. All in all, I like how this showcases the use of some very cheap, basic and materials and very simple concepts to create something lovely. I love the use of replicas and ikea products, clever use of [mass produced] posters, curtains for hiding things, and other no-fuss ideas.
Agreed. I love the apartment, except for the washing machine in the bedroom, but no apartment with a dedicated office space that huge could ever be considered small.
lovely house! I really love it :) I felt a little bit for the woman tho, seeing how some stuff seemed to be to high for her. As a small person i know ergonomic problem can cause pain and frustration, so i hope it wont bother her
You guys are the cutest 🥰 Beautiful design choices! Highly appreciate it when people know where to use IKEA and where designers like Artemide or Noguchi ☺️
Very nice! The entrance is welcoming yet practical. The self made furniture is a bit plane but the variations of chairs add interest. I appreciate the old floors; ever consider putting a beautiful rug down?
It's nice, but I would like to say that 60sqm is not small.. Quite big actually, especially in Oslo centrum Lived myself for four years at a 23sqm apartment with my boyfriend and cat (in Oslo centrum) Now that you can call small. We loved it though.
Sometimes I think NTS is gaslighting us to forget what "small" is actually like. This is the Architectural Digest definition of small. If there are more than 2 meters from your entryway and the place you store your coat, it ain't small.
Lots of very nice elements. I like bright, clean lines and streamlined functionality. I'd have to include some curtains to close off the living room (especially when sitting at the fire - personal taste). Great workmanship. G Ire
Most of their choices I would have done something completely different but I like to see/learn others’ choices and though process. PS: both on Birkenstocks with socks is the cherry on top vibe.
they made it with a clean vision. a ton of stuff is open and not that easy to clean. I like what they made out of it with where to spend may more money in mind. the chillout lounge would be my personal nightmare 😅
60sqm is really stretching the definition of small living. Really love the natural light in this apartment!

30 square meters per person. Some people live in more others in less. It's all relative.
Pleasant apartment!

In Oslo this is a normal sized apartment for a couple(with an inheritance😂). It costs ca 500-600k USD.

True, but even today 60sqm is not actually small apartment for the vast majority of people
Para nosotros es todo lo contrario. Las casas y departamentos solían ser grandes. Ahora un departamento de 60 m2 es de muy buen tamaño!

Wearing Birkenstocks inside the hosue is a very normal thing in a lot of European countries. That's why socks are so normal to wear with them.

I’ve drawn up the renovation plans myself (I’m a civil engineer), and the renovation is set to begin in the spring. Once finished, the apartment will have three bedrooms.

Lived myself for four years at a 23sqm apartment with my boyfriend and cat (in Oslo centrum)
Now that you can call small. We loved it though.
Sometimes I think NTS is gaslighting us to forget what "small" is actually like. This is the Architectural Digest definition of small. If there are more than 2 meters from your entryway and the place you store your coat, it ain't small.
The 2 kitchen lights and oven look like the face of a shocked crab
I love the dining room light! Is it available for purchase?
Lots of very nice elements. I like bright, clean lines and streamlined functionality. I'd have to include some curtains to close off the living room (especially when sitting at the fire - personal taste). Great workmanship. G Ire
Most of their choices I would have done something completely different but I like to see/learn others’ choices and though process.
PS: both on Birkenstocks with socks is the cherry on top vibe.
This is beautiful
Wonderful
It doesn’t seem small but very nice.
Good job 👍🏻
I really love the separation between the office and the living room
love the apartmenttt n love the couplee
they made it with a clean vision. a ton of stuff is open and not that easy to clean. I like what they made out of it with where to spend may more money in mind. the chillout lounge would be my personal nightmare 😅
love it ❤
love this apartment... could move in tomorrow ;)
After relocating washing machine to where it belongs: kitchen
So nice! More Scandinavian content, please-thank you!
I came to write after seeing the title that 60sqm is not small.
Good idea. Bravo!!!
