    Back in the early PlayStation days some Namco games would have their loading screens be older arcade titles, I think they actually patented the idea.

    Alyx not getting a mention in this video is a crime.
    It has 1 of the best loading screens not just for VR but for all mediums.
    You are placed in a room with a map of the area of city 17 on a hologram table in front of you where you can see you're entire path through the city down to every single building. It's that loading screen that made me aware that every level in alyx is back to back connected and you pretty much literally walk from the start to the end of the game with little distance jumps

    An pretty good loading screen, specifically in VR, is No Man's Sky. For loading into the game itself you float through stars, and for things like warping to other planets, it shows you going through a wormhole. It is way better than most games, let alone most VR games' loading screens.

    Seriously cool video concept, and especially one that not enough devs think about. Heck, even Contractors has a solid loading screen experience since they let you have infinite ammo and a shooting range while the lobby loads up and you're waiting for the host to hit start. Then when you first enter the game, if others are taking a while to connect, you have a basketball court to make a couple shots in. lol

      they use nand flash storage yes, but the quality and performance of nand flash can vary greatly.
      usb sticks and sd cards are nand storage just like sata and nvme ssds are.
      usb sticks and sd cards get bottom of the barrel, cheap and often defective nand flash while the sata and nvme ssds get the good stuff.
      emmc, which is kind of similar to an sd card in performance and durability (in other words, not good) is the thing that is often used in phones, laptops and i suspect they are the thing used in the quest headsets as it is dirt cheap.
      emmc is slow and unreliable, sometimes worse than hard drives.

    • @KatTheCaz
      @KatTheCaz 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @guesswho2778 Phones and Quests dont use emmc. They use something like UFS 3.1 at least the 256GB version. Do a speed test on your phone and you might see 2000MB/s not 20. Same on the quest. This all is just an educated guess. Very cheap laptops tend to use emmc tho. Emmc is limited to 64GB. Quest 2 has more(the old 64Gb variant is not counted, it should use the same tech as the higher capacity ones)
      Edit: Emmc supports up to 128Gb.

    i quite like the loading screens in half life : alyx
    while not really interactive, its still nice and doesnt serve as much of an interruption, the color of the area around you fades to grey, with everything still staying fully visible but lacking color, and an orange hologram of a 3d map appears in front of you, showing you where you've been and where you currently are, and gives an indication of your progress while providing a small moment to rest.
    you actually end up looking forward to them, as they are spaced decently far apart, and serve as a moment where you can safely stop and rest without having to worry about anything.

    I don't know about VR loading screens, but I remember when I played Lego Star wars: the force awakens on my 3DS XL as a kid and the loading screens had this little pixelated minigame where you were in the millennium falcon and had to shoot the oncoming tie fighters before they got to the other side of the screen. Little details like that genuinely add so much to a game (I legitimately remember playing that minihame more than I do the rest of the game lol) and VR has massive potential for such details

    • @theplushfrog
      @theplushfrog 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Problem with this is that with many headsets you can't reliably read paragraphs of text, but if you have a story told in audio, then it might get cutoff if someone loads faster, or you force the faster loader to wait in a loading screen when they don't need to.

    • @dzxtricks

    actually, i remember one time in roblox i cooked up a loading system in ~20 minutes. basically, when you activate a certain trigger, it would unload the previous scene and load the current scene, but where the two scenes connected there was no visual difference, essentially making it look completely seamless and smooth. I used this for a cheap non-euclidean effect where you make 2 lefts into a hall where it looks like it should take you right back to where you just were, but instead it took you to a completely new room.

  •  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I spend too much time fiddling with the loading screen of our game. At the end we settled for a void where the user can still walk around in a certain radius, open the menu and view a 360 image while a floating window with a bit of a parallax effect shows the next map thumbnail and the loading progress.
    For most devs, black void loading in is just practical-it’s faster and avoids motion sickness.
    Interactive environments look cool but increase load times, and async loading can still cause lags. It’s a trade-off: speed vs. visuals.

    More often than not you need to keep in mind at all times that its a game with limits so you dont hit a wall or violate tracking or something.
    Not having to worry about the game having limits and getting occupied by the sights, feelings, and actions without distraction is the main thing of immersion.
    Jank is the opposite, and the physical commitment of standing and always having the headset on amplifies that massively.
    Might have to try and add something lightweight and interactive to make loading screens better. Sensory deprivation is just not good. Convergence looks like a stellar example

    I found the best way to fix loading screens just help the toaster or microwave and you're waiting for the food to be done and then once the beep goes off for the toast pops up you can play the game

    And then you have Resonite (VRChat on crack). No loading screens. Instead of loading you will just get into unloaded world and slowly see how stuff renders around you. It is kinda cool to watch, also even when you are still "loading" you can already do stuff in the game UI, move around and obviously talk to other people. If you don´t even want to do that you can just "pre-load" the new world/instance before hand and actually appear in that world/instance only when it is already loaded or when you manually decide to go there. Also, all worlds are cached so you can jump from one to another without any loading as, well, everything that was already loaded is in your cache.

    I feel like loading screens will never entirely go away since with faster and bigger memory there's always more and more to load so people really need to figure that out. For me the steamvr game launching loading screen is always the worst since it's so vague and looks bugged by design so i never know if the game is opening properly or not and it adds a layer of uneasiness to every loading that just makes it worse.

    its funny cuz back then i useto wish i could have a vr headset. but now i barely have the motivation to play any of the games i got. either bc ive finished them or the loading times are just way too long (for bonelab i wait like 15 minutes just to load into the menu)

    I think I got spoiled by PC gaming loading screens, like literally, with my NVME SSD it usually takes about 30 seconds to load into a save in most games, while in Quest 3 it's closer to 2-2.5 minutes. I guess that's why I play beatsaber so much, it takes 5 seconds to load

    Just use pass-through. Even if your PC gamer there’s no way you have a VR headset that doesn’t have passed through because you’ve gotta go somewhere where your PC isn’t at some point and because you know that you have a VR headset that can be away from a PC and also all of those headsets have passthrough. So just turn on pass road and do something you still have audio come through the head set speakers so you know when the game loads!

    Me playing Minecraft: loading screens.. Okay..
    Me playing Minecraft in VR: oh god it's horrible, literally closing eyes until world loads and 0 fps stops killing my eyes.
    Surprisingly, flatscreen Minecraft has a solution for loading different dimensions, it's immersive portals mod. Which requires even more computing power and isn't compatible with vivecraft (yet). I would throw shaders away, if it were compatible, to squeeze every little bit of computing power I have.

    I have a quest 3 and in there you can multitask, while is loading I open up instagram or a browser tab, but you are right there should be some animation instead of loading screens, like a asgards teleport B&S has that when you beat the golem but it still shows a loading screen at the end 😂

    With all the mixed reality now, it should just make a portal. Each time you move to a new level you go back to your real room, wait a bit and then see the portal open again to continue. Not just levels, but for applications in general. The cut to black is really off putting.

  • @YoruVII

    Oh my yes Immersive loading screens are great. I may be wrong but I think back in the early days of games some company patented minigames in loading screens and I think that limit has stunted loading screen development because in the beginning most people could not do it for legal reasons and nowadays flatscreen games are slow to innovate.

  • @k0lpA
    @k0lpA 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think the issue is that while loading, traditionally the game tries to take up as much computing power as it can to load as fast as possible. In VR some computing power needs to be kept in backup so that when you move your head the image moves and it has to be enough so it doesn't lag like crazy and makes you sick. In flat games they can play an animation and even if the framerate isn't great it's not very obvious because you don't have control. In VR you always have to have control of the camera or you lose the VR immersion.
    Having more elaborate loading screens would mean the game would either load slower because more power would need to be used for the loading screen or it would be laggy and you would basically hold your head still to not get dizzy so it would be pointless. Take alien rogue incursion for example, it loads while you can still move and it's so laggy I would rather have a normal loading screen, the seamless effect is completely ruined by the fps dropping to 10. I think it might have been ok to make the loading longer and keep better performance but idk I got a pretty good PC and the loading is still not very short and you have nothing to do while you wait really. Arken age for example just fades to black which is usually the worst because you are stuck in a black voide but the loading takes like 2-3 seconds maybe 5 if it's a bigger area, I think they could have made it so it's some kind of very bulky door with a slow animation like batman but if that means making the loading 3 times as long is it really worth it ? Like if the game requires 70% of your CPU to run smoothly there's only 30% left for the CPU to use for loading without the performance going down. I think this technique works better on standalone like in batman because the game only runs on quest 3 so it knows exactly how much headroom it has.
    I think the best for PCVR would be if it could somehow make use of standalone headsets so the loading screen would run in standalone while your computer is loading. For example in alien it could pop your PDA up and you could look at your current objective, your ammo count, the map or read some lore while it loads. Since it's using the standalone processing power and not the PC there wouldn't be any lag at all. It could even just play a kind of 360 movie like say in blade and sorcery there could be a scene on a boat, that way it could have the same graphical fidelity as in PCVR and not be too obvious that it switched to standalone.
