    Thank you SO much for watching today. I've done a lot of thinking about what is (or what isn't) clutter so I would make better decluttering decisions. I'm sharing what I came up with in this video. Hope it helps. Do you have any suggestions for us? Was this helpful to you? Hope you had a great week!

    Well thought out video - thanks! I would go further and actually use Grandma's silverware for everyday.......UNLESS, you have to polish it. Then it is great right in the drawer where it is! LOL!! You are correct! No one is going to come back to haunt and be angry with us for getting rid of items! It's going to be okay. (I have cut up a worn out quilt that my beloved aunt made. I made Christmas tree ornaments out of some of it.)

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Deb! Yeah, the silverware has to be polished, but less so if it is used a lot and polished while it's being cleaned. (It can't go in the dishwasher.) My kids and grandkids are too wild for that, so I stick to Sunday dinners or when I'm eating by myself. :-) Making ornaments with the quilt was a great idea!

      I'm so glad you're here! I found those at Target a number of years ago. I just looked on Amazon and found this, which looks about the same (same configuration), but it's about an inch wider. It's a lot less expensive. I may have to get me another one. I love them. amzn.to/3TMyU0d

    I have been watching many videos about decluttering and simplifying so I was curious when your video popped up on my feed. I like your points of view, especially about balance and knowing what works for us as individuals. I'm a firm believer in the "you do you" philosophy. I like your title question....it IS thought-provoking!
    I have found that using Dana K. White's No-Mess decluttering system really takes care of that on the 4th step of her process (after trash, easy stuff & duh donations) by asking the question "Where would I look for this first?" Then take it there immediately. When you changed where you keep your manicure items, you inspired me to move mine to the living room, too!

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't Dana's question a good one? That is so true. I'm smiling that you moved your manicure items, too. How cool is that? :-)

    My dear friend Rozanne, I haven't been able to watch your videos for a while. I lost my mother 15 years ago, I haven't been able to unpack her house and her belongings for 15 years. I've been dealing with this for a month. Our belongings make us so busy, they take away our energy. I see that it keeps you very busy, too. You are a friend from far away. You are in my prayers.

    This was such a sensible video. I have watched a few decluttering videos where things were just quickly thrown out or donated. I keep a box in my hall cupboard where I put in recyclables. I keep it for a month and honestly Rozanne, sometimes I go back to retrieve something I really didn’t want or need to throw out! I’m also like you and very sentimental about keeping things. Since I started being more mindful about organising, I have kept the things I really want and given away the rest. I love this style of video Rozanne!

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Linda! I'm also finding that it is better if I take my time and be thoughtful about it. I am consistently working on decluttering, but I'm pretty methodical and don't mind if I swing through an area a few times. Once I feel I'm finished, I stop even if I still have quite a bit. I'm so glad you're liking this style of video. It feels so much better making them!

  • @rosiehelminiak2947

    I feel like this was excellent advice! While i do like to declutter, sentimental things are hard to let go of and i want to use the things i have. I watch a lot of these types of videos and some of the people have no attachment to family things and donate them...and thats totally ok for them, but not for me. I like those people and respect them, but thats an area i struggle with. Also, to put things where you use them is the key! I completely agree!

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Rosie! Sentimental things are hard, so I'm trying to come up with methods of dealing with them. I'm pretty sentimental myself, so it's something to think about. I saw someone today say that you can get rid of things from people you haven't actually met, but I am fascinated by having some things that were owned by my great-grandmother, etc. I just don't need too many of them. It sounds like you understand what I mean. :-)

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe this is true. I ended up with too much clutter because I fell into making home decor videos. I describe this in my video about "breaking up with my shopaholic self." I had a wake up call and have completely stopped that. I'm now gradually working through my belongings with the goal of working through everything to get them to a manage able level. I also have a rule for myself that I do not buy any more decor and after a season has passed, I know what I"m using (which is less) and then I declutter it. It's a relief to not feel pressure to buy more than I should.

    I use turntables a lot. My spices are on turntables. I do have to periodically realphabetized things because not everyone in the family puts things back like that. But it’s nothing that a few more spins can’t solve. I can put tall bottles of oil and vinegar on the top shelf because whatever I want can spin to the front. I just have to get up there once a year or so to give it a nice wipe out. I got a little carried away and put Pyrex measuring cups on another one, and Immersion blender parts, and rotary chopping/slicing cones on another.
    It may not be the most economical use of space, but it is definitely the least frustrating when I have what I want at the front whenever I want it.
    Supplements and laundry things, and some personal care items up in the bathroom ditto.

      I still have a two hole punch that doesn’t fit any paper that I have, but it was on my dad’s desk, solid metal, glides perfectly through the holes, a beautifully designed tool. @@TowardsASimpleLife - I have the next Gen to palm things off on, too 🤞🏼🤣 Hubs was finally ready to let me get rid of unused glass and crystal items that were wedding gifts and I was ready to part with sentimental items - I took photos of each item and offered them to a “nesting” niece with a traditional mindset and who had learned about quality items from her mom. It was TOTALLY worth the time and effort to let her pick what she liked, pack it in too much padding, and ship to her. No more unused items clogging an upper cabinet, rendering it useless to me!
      I got it all down with the help of a friend with better knees for ladder-work and replaced it with a large plastic tub that holds equally light-weight to-go containers. I always have containers to send things out after parties, and for sending home-made bone broth to friends who are sick (or just to pamper the grand-dogs 🥰). No ladder needed. No risk of hurting myself. I only keep what fits in the tub. And the tub was free, courtesy of decluttering holiday decor!

    See to me to have out all those spice bottles in view, is clutter. More importantly you can't see the expiration dates n spices do go bad more often than people realize. N having all the cooking utensils on the counter, n cook books etc is just more clutter. Maybe throw them in a drawer. But that's just my opinion. Spices n cooking utensils n such do not need to be out cluttering the counters.
    Again just my thoughts to help people to declutter. Less is more n looks much better👍

      No worries, Laura! It's all good. We don't have many drawers in our home that will work for that kind of thing, so over time, I had to get used to everything being like that. In my former homes, they would be in drawers. Now, I've become so used to them that I almost consider them decorative elements. Believe it or not, I use all of that stuff I'm kind of a whirlwind in the kitchen. What I wish I could change out is the busy granite pattern on the counter tops. The home came with it and it's not something I would have chosen myself. I'm just glad it's granite though. :-) Thanks for watching!
