- Luke Thomas: Oleksandr Usyk overwhelmed Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. But it didn't happen without a few setbacks and, ultimately, key adjustments from Usyk.
What were those adjustments and why were they so effective?
Luke Thomas breaks down how Usyk's use of level changes, feints, lead foot positioning and more enabled him to arguably become the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

That boxing IQ is what he gained from the 350 amateur fights he had, boxing became like breathing to him. Exactly like the greatest jazz musicians, they don't need to think about musical theory when they play anymore, they can just go by feel because it's all been repeated countless of times.
Usyk is the John Coltrane of boxing.
What people are missing in those rounds 4, 5and 6 is that Usyk's gameplan was to wear Fury down. Usyk was losing those rounds but he was making Fury work at an unsustainable pace. By round 7 you can see Fury's footwork slowing down and his hands dropping. Usyk executed a top level gameplan which worked 100%, he had to go through adversity to get there but he did it.
Muhammed Ali's style.
✅ Olympic Gold Medalist
✅ Undisputed Cruiserweight Champ
✅ Undisputed Heavyweight Champ
✅ Undefeated
Undisputed gentleman & very humble champion. Usyk is a legend! & all time great! 👑🐐
Don’t forget lineal champion
yes a true champion but even sweeter for fury when he wins the rematch i see them fighting3 times before this is over
Ukraine amateur Champion
European amateur Champion
World ametuer Champion
He came, He saw , he Conquered
He’s a bad man!
He also got revenge against the last 2 guys to beat Wladimir Klitschko
Usyk has been studying Fury intensively for many years. Class act
Luke, USYK is such a great technician. He knew how to work inside FURY's jab. Man, his footwork and distance management are a thing of beauty. Poetry in motion!
Usyk is just such a high level technical fighter, there's so much going on in his fighting. His ability to problem solve, test, bait and adapt on the fly is astonishing. All the while, he piles on constant pressure, sticking to you like shit on bedsheets. Once he has you figured out, he puts his foot on the gas and pushing up an already exhausting pace. Genius.
Not knowing where the strikes are coming from and being caught completely out of position, must drive someone like Fury insane. He's never been shown up like that.
Shit on bedsheets ? 😂 what the hell is going on at your place 😂
this is what happens when you you've been boxing for 22 years, you developed a third eye seeing punches coming before they land
He sneaks up at the end. And starts landing
@@Wally-pu2hh It's a common-tongue phrase where I'm from, lol, I don't shit the bed buddy🤣
Humanity blows my mind sometimes. The fact that Usyk can think this way in the heat of a devastating fight is incredible to me. There should be a Nobel Prize for boxing genius.
It shows how much boxing IQ matters over size
No. I mean, I get what you mean. There is a lot of chess going on in top-level boxing. But no. Let alone the amount of brainwork one has to do to get a Nobel Prize (aside from the one for peace of course), the actual prize money would be a fraction of Usyk and Fury makes from just this one fight. They absolutely don't need it.
Oleksandr Usyk is an all time great!
It's a terrible shame we lost 2 of Usyk's best years when he first moved up to heavyweight. Unfortunately for Oleksander, Fury had a stranglehold on the division and he kept delaying this fight for two years.
@@ivanjulian2532 - Usyk became undisputed in a short amount of time. It was Fury who kept delaying this fight for two years.
jake paul would beat usyk
@@fightgame321no way the boxing community lets Jack win
@@fightgame321they already told him for his Tommy Fury fight, but Jake’s not a bad guy…he’s supporting boxing by fighting and promoting his stable
Usyk asking his coach to kiss his crucifix at the end of round 7 is an all time sporting moment IMO
It was a crucifix inhaler with performance enhancing gas in it...................
Beautiful analysis 👌 usyk it's the goat of boxing, his skills are on an other level, his foot work, head movement is iq in the ring. Truly the best boxer of this generation
Luke, can I make a recommendation? You don't need to do the preamble of "you're not an expert." YES you are! Your film studies are some of the best in the business. Ditch the modesty, your analysis is always spot on
it speaks volumes that DJ and Max both got 'annoyed' with him for figuring out and explaining their strategies. High praise indeed.
Ikr, if this guy isn't considered boxing expert then who is? Lol
I do think it’s valid for boxing, which he never trained in and is somewhat newer to. I actually think he should consider casual boxing training for additional insight.
Surprised to see you here. I found your channel last week while trying to learn about VIX. Great videos!
@@bransan97 Ha, if you watch my livestreams eventually you'll hear me talking about UFC. I've been a die hard fan since watching UFC 1, never missed one since
By far the best analysis I seen yet, awesome work. Usyk skill and technique is UNREAL
An incredible analyst highlighting the tactical acumen and skillful brilliance of Usky's boxing.
This is the true tale of Usyk's domination over Luke. Wasn't close at all.
Lmao you know they're a really bitter Fury hater when they try to call him 'Luke'. What a clown 😂😂
Great video. When it’s broken down like this you can appreciate just how special Usyk is.
Usyk beat the final boss.
King Gippo
Fury ain't no boss he's a dosser with a padded record who has been overrated for years.
@@anul6801lol puchout
No Usyk is the final boss.
@@thomaslandcaster9638 Until he get's beat. There are no final bosses except "the rock".
I was one of the ones who rated usyk as a better boxer, but didn't think he had the size or strength to compete with fury.. I was so wrong and I'm kinda glad. It brought the best out of both fighters. If fury was gonna ever lose his undeafeted streak.. This is the way to lose a fight. It was a damn close exciting and unbeleivably technical fight. One of the all time greatest heavyweight boxing matches. No shame in losing to someone as amazing as Usyk, and it was a honor to watch these two finally make the superfight we never thought we would of ever seen a few years back.. Man usyk came in kicked ass and conquered all he might aswell retire. Nothing can now top what he's done. He beats fury 4/5 times atleast imo. He's to good. It's a shame for tyson.. As he was the greatest.. But now it's Usyk
Fury was never that good. Overhyped by the media.
I was not surprised because I long thought Usyk vs AJ was for best HW in the world and since he was able to handle AJ power in that rematch he’ll have less to worry about vs Fury. Then Usyk switched it up and actually walked Dubois down which showed how underrated his power is.
Also if you go back and watch his earlier fights vs bigger guys like Joe Joyce even tho it was in amateurs without headgear, Usyk is as game as they come and will stay in your face and seems to be a natural fire fight type boxer who latered learned how to box technical.
Thanks so much for this, Luke! Love your breakdowns! Been an Usyk fan since back in his amateur days and it's been amazing to watch him dominate the sport.
To put it in perspective of size and weight difference.
this was like a world Weltereight Champion facing a world Light Heavyweight Champion: 40lbs weight difference/ 6'' in height/ around 8'' in reach add to that the guy is 37 years old.
Just an incredible fighter Usyk bar none. Unless Terence Crawford takes on, and beats, Beterbiev or Bivol you can't call anyone else the greatest at the moment.
In reality 4.5 inch the most diference in height, tyson is not 6.9 ,he is about 6.7-6.7.5 inches
It's like Pacquiao going up eight divisions. Insane shit that happens once a generation. I guess there are men who are so skilled and talented that the opponent is merely an after thought.
Usyk 6”3 230 fight night
It’s not like that at all, this is like two heavyweights going at it
@@Jamesdavid9873he weighed in at 223 lbs.
Still buzzing. These Heavyweights delivered for boxing
Agreed, Usyk is THE man but Fury is still so good. What a great fight. Proud of both men and pleasure to witness this moment.
🔥🔥🔥
💯.Great fight so high on boxing this year. Great cards all the time these days
Boxing is COOL again! 😂 Thanks Usyk
@@t.d6379Furys only attribute is his freakish size . Without it he’s just Nathan Gorman
The full power left hook it's a thing of beauty. Look at that right shoulder pushing all the power to the left. Wow
Usyks jab is better than Tyson’s and Tyson didn’t expect that as a large man
Great post fight analysis. I've been a boxing for over 40 years. These break downs are good reminders of how much I don't know of the sport I love. Thank you for the breakdown🥊
It will take Tyson Fury centuries to be able to adjust and learn for the next match. It is like usyk is father and Tyson is the baby. Father playing with his little son
fantastic analyses!
Thanks from France, with Boxing Gems and Atlas, you are my favourite boxing channel ! That being said, personnaly i find Usyk 's performance even more impressive than Crawford against Spence or Inouue 's last fights, for the level of adversity. You were so high on Crawford after the Spence fight, i'm curious to know your opinion. We are experiencing a great time to be a fan of boxing, and it's a real pleasure to share it with you. 💪
4 am in California time. Thanks DONK
Great breakdown Luke
I didn't understand how good Usyk was until watching this break down
Great analysis-- and very useful for fans who don't have martial arts training. I would love to see this series expand to cover historically important fights and the techniques of the all time greats.
Best Breakdown around before I go to work this am....thanks, Luke!🔥🔥🔥
Technical difficulties is Luke’s life story
Monster fight and very impressive by both. Congrats Olek Usyk!
I feel higher volume guys like Ali,Norton ,Holmes ,Usyk and young Tyson,Frazier would be very problematic for Fury..He eventually will wear down.
The more robotic, power punchers like AJ and Wilder are easier for him to predic.
AJ would sleep Fury and actually landed more shots on Usyk than Fury did.
Magnificent analysis. So many complex things happened in this fight that deep analysis is required to really appreciate. Thank you.
Yes! Aside from reactions, this is the first channel i thought of, that ive been waiting for since the decision, i love the breakdowns, i learn so much more in so little time. Thanks for your hard work
Brilliant. I always enjoy your technical and tactical analysis. Big thanks.

Great analysis. Glad I found the channel.
Fascinating. Great video, thanks.
I love your videos, please keep them coming.
Thanx for the vid, its a damn good fight breackdown
29:10 is the very boomiest of booms. It's truly amazing the speed of Usyk's combinations at that stage of a brutal fight.
Both fought great but in the end the better man won that night
Thanks for the excellent details and analysis
Best study !
Wow. Incredible technical analysis. Thanx for a great vid

Good stuff! Luke, it was the Fury vs Wilder 2 film study that made me discover your channel and as a result: Mortal Kombat. Keep 'em coming!

Good work here Luke. Thank you.
Excellent breakdown Sir!
Wonderful thank you!
Great analysis thank you👍
Brilliant analysis as always.
Always top notch stuff Luke
Thank you - This was great
Did anyone see Fury start to gas in round 8? Deep breathes and weakened strikes - I could see it. This is when Usyk started his game plan. It's almost like Usyk ropadoped through rounds 1 to 7.
Yes, it resembled rumble in the jungle, 😂😂😂
George Foreman said Usyk would win.
Yeah he broke his nose
@@shauns9563 Holyfield picked him too, he knew what he saw.
Usyk was ahead going into the 8th. No rope-a-dope here.
@@paulryan490 I didn't say he wasn't ahead, just saying he sat back and let Fury unload and gas.
Well done. Thank you.
masterfull analysis. Thank you
Beautifully narrated and investigated. Many thanks
LT with the great brak downs
Brilliant breakdown brother.
New sub here👊🏻🇬🇧
great work Luke
I couldn't wait for your analysis of this Luke, and was not disappointed. As always, this was a fantastic breakdown. Thank you sir.
Muchas gracias Luke, grande. Teaching me how to see and appreciate genius, your standards of analysis are a la par with the level of the fight and the fighters!
Fantastic... Great snalysis!
That's why Sugar Hill was screaming, STOP crossing your f'n feet!!!!
nah its calm, John said Fury was ahead
Great breakdown and explanation Luke! You made it so easy to see that even I as an ignorant on boxing (like the sport, think its the purest of all fighting sports) understand a bit of whats happening, thanks and again, great job! Keep it up! God bless ✝️❤️🥊
Great job.
Lovely analysis
Best analyst in combat sport. KUDO to Luke Thomas
Thank you Luke
Great analysis. Usyk put on a boxing clinic on how to nullify an opponent's size advantage.
Great break down and watching in slow motion , as you explain was a eye opener to just how skilled Usyk is.
Thank you.
Fantastic breakdown.

Take a bow sir! Thank you for taking my boxing knowledge to another level. I enjoyed your technical analysis immensely and I have marvelled anew at Oleksander Usyk's ring craft, ability and boxing intelligence.
Happy New Year

Great video. Was going to ask for what Fury did well and what usyk changed to negate this.
Then came your last sentence.
