  • Luke Thomas: Oleksandr Usyk overwhelmed Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. But it didn't happen without a few setbacks and, ultimately, key adjustments from Usyk.
What were those adjustments and why were they so effective?
Luke Thomas breaks down how Usyk's use of level changes, feints, lead foot positioning and more enabled him to arguably become the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

That boxing IQ is what he gained from the 350 amateur fights he had, boxing became like breathing to him. Exactly like the greatest jazz musicians, they don't need to think about musical theory when they play anymore, they can just go by feel because it's all been repeated countless of times.
Usyk is the John Coltrane of boxing.

What people are missing in those rounds 4, 5and 6 is that Usyk's gameplan was to wear Fury down. Usyk was losing those rounds but he was making Fury work at an unsustainable pace. By round 7 you can see Fury's footwork slowing down and his hands dropping. Usyk executed a top level gameplan which worked 100%, he had to go through adversity to get there but he did it.

Usyk is just such a high level technical fighter, there's so much going on in his fighting. His ability to problem solve, test, bait and adapt on the fly is astonishing. All the while, he piles on constant pressure, sticking to you like shit on bedsheets. Once he has you figured out, he puts his foot on the gas and pushing up an already exhausting pace. Genius.

No. I mean, I get what you mean. There is a lot of chess going on in top-level boxing. But no. Let alone the amount of brainwork one has to do to get a Nobel Prize (aside from the one for peace of course), the actual prize money would be a fraction of Usyk and Fury makes from just this one fight. They absolutely don't need it.

I was one of the ones who rated usyk as a better boxer, but didn't think he had the size or strength to compete with fury.. I was so wrong and I'm kinda glad. It brought the best out of both fighters. If fury was gonna ever lose his undeafeted streak.. This is the way to lose a fight. It was a damn close exciting and unbeleivably technical fight. One of the all time greatest heavyweight boxing matches. No shame in losing to someone as amazing as Usyk, and it was a honor to watch these two finally make the superfight we never thought we would of ever seen a few years back.. Man usyk came in kicked ass and conquered all he might aswell retire. Nothing can now top what he's done. He beats fury 4/5 times atleast imo. He's to good. It's a shame for tyson.. As he was the greatest.. But now it's Usyk

I was not surprised because I long thought Usyk vs AJ was for best HW in the world and since he was able to handle AJ power in that rematch he’ll have less to worry about vs Fury. Then Usyk switched it up and actually walked Dubois down which showed how underrated his power is.
Also if you go back and watch his earlier fights vs bigger guys like Joe Joyce even tho it was in amateurs without headgear, Usyk is as game as they come and will stay in your face and seems to be a natural fire fight type boxer who latered learned how to box technical.

To put it in perspective of size and weight difference.
this was like a world Weltereight Champion facing a world Light Heavyweight Champion: 40lbs weight difference/ 6'' in height/ around 8'' in reach add to that the guy is 37 years old.
Just an incredible fighter Usyk bar none. Unless Terence Crawford takes on, and beats, Beterbiev or Bivol you can't call anyone else the greatest at the moment.

Did anyone see Fury start to gas in round 8? Deep breathes and weakened strikes - I could see it. This is when Usyk started his game plan. It's almost like Usyk ropadoped through rounds 1 to 7.
