  • Henry Ford sought out and befriended John Burroughs in the early 1910s. The wealthy industrialist and the naturalist -- a seemingly odd pair -- shared a love of birds and nature. Though there were philosophical differences -- Burroughs had little use for the automobile -- both developed a mutual respect for each other and created a lasting friendship. Ford invited Burroughs to Fair Lane, Ford's home in Dearborn, Michigan, on a number of occasions. In 1916, Burroughs visited Fair Lane to help lay the cornerstone for the estate's "Burroughs Grotto." This wildlife shrine contained stones from New York (Burroughs's home state), a heated bird bath, and a statue of the famed nature writer.

The birdbath is still intact to this day. A beautiful area to reflect.
