as a school teacher , a father and a husband, sometimes I get burnt out and tho I have all these ideas , the timing and feeling to shoot has to feel right . randomly, I’ll have take a shot of something outside the window of my car leaving work and bam! I’m inspired . Even so, I take my time with it and if it doesn’t feel good , I don’t pressure it. I’m fine with that .

I love my downtime. When I should feel like in a rut, I fortunately have other creative pursuits. Sometimes its writing, sometimes drawing or painting or just editing my photographies. I find it freeing to not be fully consumed by one creative outlet all the time.

nothing like a good gardening sesh to get yourself inspired for your next photographic adventure. Love the anamorphic look, worked super well in that baseball field!

We all live busy lives and sometimes lose sight of what we really want to do to make us happy and it causes ruts or that burnout feeling even before we get to do "that thing".
This video was so good and stuff like this inspires me to go out and shoot.
I too, have a photography/film TH-cam channel and I haven't posted in a few months now. This inspires me to do so.
You have a new subscriber. I love supporting and seeing this on my feed as well because it pushes me to be better.

Dear Ivan, If this is the "rut" you find yourself in I just wonder what you'd be capable of producing when you find yourself in a groove! As I mentioned before, your thoughtful approach to photography is a rarity in these times of instant gratification and the futile fixation to shoot to get 'likes'. You already have the vision, and it's only a question of time before you find your voice. Not that they're mutually exclusive, but, in addition to being an accomplished photographer, I think you're already a top-notch video producer-scripting, concept development, editing...and, not the least, your cinematography. You have a rare talent, so keep up the good work!

I’ve been in a rut and find myself toying with the idea to purchase the SL. but then I come to my senses and push through. Living in Saigon for 20 years I just can’t get inspired to walk the streets and shoot.

Some awesome photos here; I particularly liked the ones of the guy taking out the trash, and your silhouette in the parking garage. This video is also such a great reminder that your lens (and camera) is just a way to capture your feelings about a thing or place, and we shouldn’t get caught up in trying to find ‘the one’ focal length, camera, or medium that is perfect for us

I needed this video. My direction has been the same for a year or so now, and all of a sudden I'm in a tailspin because I can't get anything to look the way I want it to, and it feels like there's no cohesion in my work at all anymore. I've been traveling for about 3 months now, so my subject matter has changed drastically, and I think it's that more than anything. I like the advice to just 'shoot through it'. Thanks, Ivan.

How about seeing ruts like fermentation periods with brewing: not a lot happening on the surface, but vital to development...

If you had moved to the UK from Hong Kong we are so much more crowded here than Canada. By that I mean you will have lots more people to photograph as the cities and even towns are packed with people. I often see street photographers in the US cities like Atlanta and I wonder where all the people are in the empty streets. I find cities stressful, but I dip in and out of them occasionally and I feel a real outsider when I'm in a city being more of a country person, but I feel that is an advantage as I often see things others who live there do not. Fresh eyes so to speak. Don't worry you are just rejuvenating yourself, taking a subatical.

Another thoughtful and insightful video , quite like the results though there does seem to be a bit of barrel distortion at the far edges of the the images . Is that a characteristic of most anamorphic lenses ?

Very good. Its psychologically sound not to fight your emotions or feelings but bring them into the light of consciousness and they will dissipate. They only bind you when buried in the sub conscious. Its not as rut. Its a growth spurt.
