That whole thing came about because MTV was planning a series of mashup shows. They asked Jay-Z to participate, and asked which artist he'd like to perform with; he said Linkin Park.
When reached out to about creating maybe 3 mashups, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park (the guy who raps with Jay-Z here) sent over a whole bunch of drafts for mashups, which Jay-Z really liked. They agreed that some vocals and instruments would need redoing to fully integrate the songs, so they went into the studio together. In the end, they liked what they made so much that they released a 6 track studio album ("Collision Course"), did a performance of the album (where this performance is from), as well as a mini documentary about the making of the album.
MTV didn't continue the idea for mashup shows, maybe because they thought this one would be setting the bar a little high 😂❤
Linkin Park is a band that mixes many genres, including hip-hop, metal, electronic, rock and more.

Back in the day I asked for a Linkin Park album for christmas. I was thinking of Hybrid Theory. My parents got Collison Course (the Jay-Z album) for my grandma to gift to me.
That was the day I got into hiphop.
