Bonds have never been risk free. Interest rates go up, bond prices go down - treasury included. Nothing, nothing in life is risk free. You just have to identify the risks. Lose the phrase risk free.

I remember in 1933 the U.S. government forced people to turn in all their gold by law ! If you got caught with non compliance you went to jail and or fined ! It can happen again !

It is also critical to remember that this is proportional not linear. So a thirty at one person will divide in value at two and then at four and a third time at eight. Thus it would be worth (roughly)125 if the rates went overnight from one to eight. Of course you could hold the one for thirty years unless you have to raise cash. Sometime in between rates might fall and you might recover. But for now on your books you have a problem.
