As someone who's been a 'tech' for 31 years now, I do NOT believe it would take a warp core reactor breach to "fool" a tech crew into leaving. Any officer could make a shipboard announcement and give all non crew personnel 5 minutes to get off the ship. Super easy! Barely and inconvenience! I LOVE your idea so much better. Crew friction, like the time the MACO'S were brought aboard Archer's Enterprise. Learn to respect and appreciate others. What a NOVEL concept for modern audiences! Two thumbs up!

Great idea to fix the episode.
It’s worked before on a show called Babylon 5.

I barely even realized they had taken a super serum. If you’re going to introduce something like this, there needs to be consequences that make it why no one does this sort of thing. For example, it’s slowly killing them and we see them starting to fall apart. Even if they get rescued, they might not make it. Then you can have a bit of stress at the end where the crew sees them and worries, followed by the wrap up where “if we hadn’t gotten an antidote in you when we did, 5 more minutes and you’d be dead”

Uhura's abrasive interaction with the technician who wanted to work at her station was out of character for her TOS persona, because in original Trek she was always a consummate professional and she knew how to handle herself with other people. I really don't like the way the TOS characters are portrayed in Strange New Worlds.

  • @dungeoncrawler9272
    @dungeoncrawler9272 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The Galileo Seven had an outsider on the bridge pressuring Kirk to complete their main mission, which added to the stakes of the episode. Having those outside characters on board can add to the plot. And yes, it would make more sense. A lot more than "teehee! I've been a Star Fleet officer for decades, but now I'm bored!"
That episode also included Spock making a desperate decision based on emotion without having some sort of emotional outburst. This whole season is just going to character assassinations of Spock & Kirk, isn't it?

I think it should have gone like this:
The crew attempted to steal their ship. However, this involves numerous autonomous systems both on the ship and dock. As a result, they accomplished exactly nothing except waste time.
When she smugly explains how she modified her workstation, the engineers sigh and patently, as you would to a "special" child, explain that she has bypassed numerous safeguards and the helm will now need to be replaced entirely as some of the circuits are fused and it is malfunctioning. Furthermore she can expect to be brought up on charges for misuse of Federation property.

the whole thing is weird really, Roddenberry wanted to make Trek an escape for people living in a time where there were various inequalities for some people. he wanted to picture a time when we were past all of that and humanity was one and people could go about their day without all sorts of bitterness and tensions with each other. now that we had finally come close to reaching that state, suddenly everyone wants to start causing tensions between different groups of people again again and now Star Trek is about a world once again full of the tensions Rodenberry wanted to imagine a world without. now Star Trek wants to CAUSE that tension rather than imaging a happy future without it.

They make me feel less lonely out here as I spend no small amount of time screaming (in my mind) at the television, and I now understand why Gene Roddenberry didn’t want any characters from TOS in TNG. There is very little imagination to SNW and a whole lot of theft of names, plots, etc. Chapel is something akin to a ninja rather than the kind nurse. Kyle is now Asian. There's excellent historical precedent for this that could inspire many small human interest side stories.
For example when the Royal Navy sortied every ship to fight the Bismark they really meant every single last ship, and that included the brand new battleship King George V which had only just been 'officially' finished and still needed a lot of work as well as basic fitting out and training, a process normally taking a year. War time speeds it up, but still months are typical.
The yard admirals told the fleet admirals that the ship wasn't seaworthy and still needed a lot of work done. But the fleet admirals were entirely undeterred and just took the workers as well as the ship. So several hundred builders were given a ring side seat to one of WW2's major naval engagements. With reactions being wildly mixed... Some threw tantrums ignored the navy and said it was illegal to go into combat as they were in protected professions. Others found it an interesting diversion and just carried on. While still others felt patriotic fervor and threw themselves at the work tweaking nuts and bolts right the way through the whole battle.

    • @Akm72
      @Akm72 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think you're thinking of the Prince of Wales rather than King George V. However something similar happened in 1982 when there were civilian technicians on board the Type 22 frigates during the Falklands conflict. These technicians were able to conduct urgent repairs on the vital Sea Wolf missile system and were also able to upgrade it while underway to allow it to engage crossing targets and thus defend other ships as well as self-defence.

Logical. Flawlessly logical 👏👏👏 And in regards to their ongoing diversity platform, it makes no sense because nearly every other show and movie has diversity! In the 1960s, it was a pretty big deal. Today, almost every streaming service or theatrical release has dozens of shows with a variety of ethnicity, religions, and/or sexual preferences. There reaches a point where, if everyone else is doing it, you aren't that special. So just write a good story and make the hero, whoever makes the most sense.

  • @grokwhy

I like your fix. The maintenance team and the crew bond, and both learn to appreciate the difficulties in both jobs. Ortegas has an opportunity to demonstrate why she changed the interface, and the tech says he'll see about integrating her improvement into other Starships. I think this fits better into the idea of Star Trek cooperation and advancement.
But I don't think Scotty would have kind words for anyone tweaking his ship.
(ALSO the idea that the tech would be concerned about her customizing the interface is silly.)

    • @liamrobinson2084
      @liamrobinson2084 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it would be better if the tech's response to her personalization was akin to a current IT tech reacting to someone bragging about changing the background of their desktop, or personalizing their screensaver: "yeah, everyone does that", or "cool. The 2nd watch helm on the Constellation made theirs all pink and you had to give all voice commands by addressing the ship as 'Barbie', whatever that means". The point being that Ortegas, and by extension the flight crew, are NOT exponentially better than everyone else Starfleet, particularly not better than the people who build it and keep it running. Regardless, we both agree with Chato. Cheers.

@@liamrobinson2084 I agree. But the people that actually use your hardware/software provide the best feedback as to how to improve it for real-world use.

Wow... that's a great change. I had two massive issues with the episode from a Star Trek PoV. 1. Spock shouldn't have to steal the ship nor would anybody ever do that under normal circumstances. 2. The Murder Juice "barely an inconvenience" fix.
Star Fleet would have let Spock go like you said. Makes perfect sense. The idea to have IT aid in the fix would have been awesome cause yes, people hate IT (I was in IT). Also, it makes use of the damn guest star by saving the day rather than making Spock look dumb.
Fixing #2 is not having it. The two should have been clever about how to get out of that mess, or at least, clever enough to get to that air-lock w/o turning into supreme warriors. They should have used stealth and medical wits to get away from the Klingons who they'd know where adept warriors.
The fast food star trek is such a good description. For me, sure, keep the new look, the all female crew. But at least try to be Star Trek using smart writing. What pains me about ST:Dis/ST:SNW/ST:Picard-S1&2 is the fact that HUGE amounts of money are being tossed at Star Trek. Just care a bit about the writing and canon and they'd see a loyal fanbase propping it up. That fan base tuned in for ST:Dis and ran away. They are constantly trying to build up a new fan base and by all known measures... nobody is watching.
    Just a waste.

"Limitations make for challenges that forces writers to come up with clever solutions." That's it, in a nutshell. This is why you don't make a person or a situation "all powerful". (Think Ms. Marvel or "The Snap" of the MCU.) Limit people's powers and/or abilities and they're a LOT more interesting, not to mention RELATABLE. But then, when you value LAZINESS so highly -- like obviously, these people DO -- well, here we are...

  • @gregoryfloriolli9031

    That’s a good work around.
Then instead of building an entire Federation ship in cave which was ridiculous, the bad guys could have refurbished a federation ship that had been disabled in the Klingon War. It would have made more sense if we had La’an captured instead of Chapel and M’Benga. As an Augment with security training, she would have had the ability to fight the Klingons and the smarts to reprogram the transponder. And as a character we hadn’t seen alive in TOS, the audience wouldn’t automatically know she would survive.
I know they wanted to push the Chapel/Spock thing but the scene with his heart rate elevating in sick bay was more than enough to establish his feelings. We didn’t need to beat a dead horse. It would still have been a tough decision to destroy the fake ship even if it was a different crew member like La’an on the ship.

I like the way you think, Paul. Your idea is a simple yet likely very effective way of presenting the problem du jour and the inevitable solution in a much more palatable way. I like it. But the writers seem both unwilling and incapable of thinking outside the tiniest of boxes... yet, those boxes are plenty large enough to hold their miniscule amount of talent.
My biggest gripe with nu-Trek is that it is called Star Trek. Had they left that venerable franchise intact and simply peddled their wares as, say, Space Tripping, a whole new "politically correct" series, at least I could ignore it without feeling angry. That's when work that requires major systems to be down, stuff like the engines, life support, main computer, etc. Maybe even doing hull repairs. I like your changes except for them taking the Enterprise. Good concept. Stealing the ship felt too cliche. I mean he did do it in The Menagerie to save Pike, but I like your idea better. The ship has to go with the maintenance crew so we get the Enterprise crew working together with the maintenance team and they gain a better understanding of each other. A classic Trek "co-exist and learn" message.

The whole thing ends at a biker bar downing shots.

I greatly appreciate your fix... it has all kinds of opportunity for character interaction with the IT staff and if memory serves, Star Fleet is about everyone working together - isn't it? It seems that with NuTrek, Star Fleet is often at odds with our starships and its crew. What does that say when the organization that they work for is more of an antagonist than the actual villains of the story? How many times does Star Fleet need to be 'reminded' by our heroes what the Star Fleet is all about? That's what make The Orville refreshing is that the space organization that the heroes work for supports our heroes whenever they can. I think the NuTrek writers have a mandate to get to the pew-pew as quick as possible, which leaves character development and more interesting story possibilities to fall by the wayside. Or is it starside, since it's in space? And a note to the the writers: the crew can't steal the starship Enterprise every other episode, or Star Fleet will begin to catch on.

I'll have to take exception to your comment that we 'old guys' need to let go as SNW (and the other Star Dreck spinoffs) are not our Trek anymore.
It does matter, is should matter that the current reimagining shows are a purposed subversion of the originals as this reflects what is happening at large in society for actual history.
It is Orwellian in it's concept and execution; to 'fix' the past in order to sever all sense of tradition/values/culture to 'fit' what the narrative is for the immediate present.
The past matters - it must.

If only Gen Z actually read books, they could appreciate your reference. Although a significant negative about their reading Winston Smith’s literary trek is that they would gleefully adopt all things IngSoc (they unwittingly have made a good head start) and build an extra-commodious Room 101 to re-educate us old timers within.

There's so much potential for this show within the canon of TOS that it's infuriating, for one thing you had the outline of a crew from the Cage , a couple better developed like Number One and the Doctor, but room to build so many new characters or developing the minor characters, writing Spock's character ark from his demeanor in the cage to the Corbomite maneuver but alas why develope new characters and stories when you have old ones to screw up

way too logical for new writers to think of this. you are 1 000 % correct. the relentless hammering home of „the message“ will sink Paramount just as it already has the CW. They are producing a product for 10% of the viewers that could be interested. What‘s hilarious: Pike is carrying this show! We hopped in the first available escape pod and got off Discovery together with Pike….to never return.

Here's my thoughts on this episode which I have not seen; isn't the introduction of *"IT"* personnel a bit of a break from canon to begin with? Engineers have always handled the hardest "networking and hardware" stuff and everything else is basic knowledge from training at Starfleet. I don't know, just seems like an unnecessary "modernization". 😅

Over the years I would, on occasion, watch a romantic comedy with my wife. She in turn would watch science fiction programs with me.
These two worlds have merged. It seems like hollywood got rid of the science fiction writers and hired romantic comedy writers for "my" shows.
    On a darker note:
The cast of SNW reminds me of Muammar Gaddafi's bodyguards, or a cult leader surrounding himself with mostly women.
It is indeed a strange new world.

someone commented on a fb page about Chapel and M'Benga fighting, mentioning also that Chapel's very thin arms looked ridiculous during the fight, that how were we to believe that her body could sustain such physical combat and that she would have been covered in bruises if not severely injured. Most of the action was filmed the dark, so we couldn't really see that was happening other than a few punches and kicks.
What I consider Season 2's sole purpose is to facilitate the Chapel-Spock hook up and to further the Gorn as enemies. As a person who works in the information technology field, this episode was especially egregious to me because of the way the women crew treated the IT people. It shows that the writers have little to no work environment experience outside of Hollywood and little understanding of how important IT is and would be to something like a highly sophisticated starship.
As you mentioned, there are tons of plot holes. But all the episodes have tons of plot holes because the writing is terrible and according to Kurtman, we are to blame.

Oh yeah, that makes lots of sense! I like that story. The whole sudden decision to “Steal the enterprise” had no build up, no emotion or consequences connected to it then or in the end. Just a see through plot device, totally took me out of the show. I at least expected Spock to take some time to logic out the solution in a 3D chess kind of way (as an OG Spock fan would)…Even maybe struggle with the ethics of violating Starfleet but needing to save a friend. But it was all just a NOTHING BURGER. The phrase “Somehow, Palpantine has returned” comes to mind. (Sorry for Mixing drinks there, but they deserve it with that lazy story.
The first season, while it had its issues, I was mildly excited about and thought they could really have a new Star Trek show on their hands. But, as usual, they just can’t help but ruin it with bad story telling and politics.

Simpler fix while staying within canon. Change the conversation between Spock and April. April allows the mission but wants deniability to protect himself, starfleet and the Federation. If things go wrong Spock and the Enterprise can be thrown under the bus, anyone remember the episode The Enterprise Incident. Great character arc for Spock and the primary crew, as they decide to go or not,(Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock), and how to go about getting the civilians off the ship. Maybe even have a scene between Spock and Carol Kane's character enlisting her help, since she is in command of the techs.
