A lot of people seem to have not understood the film, which surprised me, but maybe knowing the original title helped. I think the biggest theme of the movie is "How do you live... with grief?" I was bawling by the end of it.

The Boy and the Heron made me gasp several times on my first viewing from the breathtaking visuals. On my second viewing, I gasped again from seeing so much that I missed the first time. Of all the contemplative films about the art of filmmaking, this might be my favorite. You ask a director to reflect on their legacy and Miyazaki creates an entire fantasy universe that encompasses both his own feelings on his career, and visual motifs from all of his previous fantasy universes. Insanity. Also, speaking of Oscar snubs, Joe Hisaishi's snub for score was CRIMINAL. I can't listen to Ask Me Why without crying. The Great Collapse MAKES the ending scene. God what a film!

Killers of the Flower Moon is my favorite of 2023. That ending was audacious in a way I love to see from one of our established masters, pushing himself in pursuit of ecstatic, dreadful truth. Also I had diarrhea during Oppenheimer, but got it out quickly and only missed Rami Malek's first appearance.

Say what you want about Crash (no really, I encourage it), but the score was incredible. Almost so good that it didn't even feel like it belonged in that movie!
I fell like the sex scene discourse has gone way down; and isn't as bad as it used to be. Poor Things is a great example of this. I heard nothing about the nudity or the sex scenes; and if that movie came out 10 years or earlier -- we would have heard a lot about it, and Yorgos Lanthimos would have been forced to cut scenes and release them in an unrated version later on. I think we are much better and more progressive as a Society than we used to be.

The John Wick stair scene also gets the award because of the way it integrates into the plot -- you've just watched Wick battle up the staircase for the last 20 minutes, the peak of which is his ultimate goal -- only to be hurtled down the concrete in one glorious stunt.

But seriously, which of the Wes Anderson Dahl short films do you think is the best? The Swan was my personal favorite. Hard to watch, but it hit so hard. The distance of the presentation left so much to the imagination, it was more visceral than it would have been otherwise.
