  • Sensei Enoeda - Real Strength Now Master Series
Today I'm going to talk about an old master who I knew quite well. He was born in Japan in 1935 and I met him in Philadelphia at The Philadelphia Karate Club when I was 18 years old. His name is Master Keinosuke Enoeda, Sensei Enoeda.

There are some amazing people around the world and you see them on film, TH-cam , tv etc. but when you actually train with someone or work with someone that is in a completely different league then count yourself lucky. We all think we are good at something until we meet someone who’s better. I had the privilege of going through two Dan grading’s with sensei Enoeda and my good lady passed her 2nd dan with sensei Enoeda . He had an amazing sense of humour and got me out on numerous occasions to use as a demonstration, believe me the power this guy had was beyond anything you could imagine. Fantastic and privileged memories. His famous quote “use stomach”

This video should have 800 million views, it usually takes too much time to realize correct breathing and relaxation is what creates real power and speed.

I met him once when he took a class at Chelsea College of Science and Technology back in the 60s. He was scary and pushed me flat on my arse when we practiced mae geri while a partner held up his gi as a target.

Although I've never done karate. I remember when I first started Taekwondo over 40 years ago (WTF style). During the line exercises one of the students kept shouting the word 'kiai'. The instructor came up to him and explained that kiai meant to shout not to use the word 'kiai' when doing it! In WTF taekwondo they call this 'kihap'. Many years later I re-started training after a 10 year break in the other style ITF taekwon-do Taekwon-do. This style is the style created by General Choi Hong Hi. I was surprised to discover that they don't kiai or kihap instead they exhale sharply which has a similar effect.

I have been to schools that shout "kiai". In a respectful manner I would explain that what they were doing was incorrect. Go back a year later and they're still shouting "kiai".
