Litter training can be hard and sometimes long, but don’t give up. Ferrets are so smart and with some consistency and patience litter box training your ferret can be successful. Here are some tips to help reduce the smell of your ferrets litter box and your ferret th-cam.com/video/P0-aRmJ7v-M/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for making such a helpful video! I don’t currently have ferrets, but eventually I’ll get two little guys when I’m ready to be able to take care of them and give them all the attention they deserve.
Awesome video! Love the advice in here! Got a few points I would add for viewers/readers, as well: #1. Block or Fill-Up corners you dont want them to poop/pee in! In the cage for example, put bedding or food/water bowls in the corners to block/fill them! OR place another litter box! They love corners, prefer corners usually, and you can see which ones they go to most often to decide litter box placement! And which other corners to block off or fill in with something else just incase! #2. Try to have two litter boxes or one oversized BIG litter box for more than one ferret! I noticed mine do not like to share boxes. Even if it's the good-sized high back kind like shown in this video (I have it), my female, Juliet, refuses to use the same box as her companion, Romeo! So I have to have two boxes if I want them to be willing to use them! #3. Love that you use paper pellets! Wooden and/or Clay is bad! Either unscented Potty Pads or Paper material that's as dust free as possible is GOOD!!!
Thank you, that’d great advice. I feel like the more information we can share with each other the better! I use to stuff piles of scrap fleece in the corners of the cage when they were young to stop them from using it as a bathroom and It helped so much. I don’t have to do it anymore, I honestly can’t remember the last time they pooped or peed on the liners. And you are definitely right about sharing litter boxes. Mine don’t like that either and they don’t like using a litter box that has poop in it. I scoop my litter boxes at least 3 times a day. If not, they will go to the bathroom on the floor next to the box instead.
Aria Stark I had that problem for a while and once in a while they still do that. I finally started putting something soft, like extra pieces of fleece fabric in all the corners they pooped in. I would make the extra fabric into a pile, sometimes I would tie it in place using the cage wires. It wasn’t pretty, but I found it really helped to stop them from pooping outside of the litter box. I have fleece cage liners, but it lays flat, so I’m not sure if putting piles of fabric in the corner made it seems less appealing to poop or what, but it definitely helped.
This is an old comment but for anyone wondering, you can get heavy duty adhesive Velcro that you can put in the bottom of the litter box and on the floor of the cage. That way they can’t move it.
I was getting so discouraged with the litter training my ferret of one year randomly started to not use the litter box unless in the cage. I have my new baby separated from her right now but he just likes too pee where he pleases. Jjat going to have to be persistent!
Katherina Charles I had to update my 100 Subscriber video and the video you commented on last night is no longer up. I want to make sure you knew so you can add your comment on the updated video. I’m sorry for any confusion.
I honestly don’t even know why am watching this video right now it’s completely litter box trained first day I brought him home I let them poop in the corner and then I felt a little litter pan with lid or put in that exact corner and put the poop from that corner in the litter pan and then he just started pooping in there and he hasn’t ever pooped anywhere else to this day I thought it was gonna take months because I looked at all the videos but it literally took the day I brought him home
I got mine (brother n sister both getting desex after next month health check then soon as possible! n just pick up poo until I head ore money but then I put kitchen roll say then I had more money so get litter stuff still early day but first day day not poo in it so I put the same stuff as u got with kitchen roll on top so hopefully they stick to it! I give u an update u given some good tops n it too 3/4 days to get use to me was biting a lot first two days I had to grab scruff of neck n hiss n I'm use vocal also I had to gent slap then n I mean very gently n go no n push away n it does help. If it a hard bite and there latched on n not letting go I give a gental flat on noise but the last resort Also they been running around for week n a half n I getting new cage on Tuesday I did help one from pet at home in uk n it was shot more bars off I been watching you video but I think if this doesn't work I try Sawdust there two 3/4 places they poo two in living room and one in bed door they done it could of time in front of front door but I kept pick it up also I no u have to be careful with sent n over cleaning. Also say it you videos a girl will need desex or will be on heat for rest of there life n get tell that 66 then health check 40 then the stuff let food n litter tray n toys is about 50 then cage is about 90 then do desex him is 88 then de flee is 10er then pet insurance is 30 a month 2000 over each at exotic pets t may come as rspca website it didn't for me... So you kinda need 300 to get it all done but to set in n start u need about 150 includes cage I got my ferrets for 10er n sister for 5er could not let them be lonely mate was like come on Chris get it so I did But don't let them get under sofa! They rip the padding out kinda had to shake sofa GENTLY N SAY STOP! N I stuff around sofa with own towl they not doing it ask much Also harness walking the fully adjustable ones not the padded ones the look more stylish because my at 5 month 3 week it didn't fit I had to get bitten to train n get to go exchange it from strap adjustable harness also is the bit them they can't rip
i really wouldn’t mind cleaning up my ferrets mess but my house is literally full carpet and i want to free range my future ferret but i’m not trying to ruin my parents white carpet
Todomo with a lot of consistency you could have your ferret litter box trained, but most ferrets have accidents once in a while. I’m sure there are some ferrets (probably not many) that are 100% litter trained, but I personally don’t know of any. Sometimes when they get excited they poop and sometimes they just can’t make it to the litter box. I definitely do not want to discourage you from free roaming your future ferret though. Letting your ferret free roam is probably one of the best things you could do for him/her. I can honestly say that all four if my ferrets use the litter box the majority of the time, but there are occasions when they have accidents.
todomo, I also have a white carpet all over my appartment. I usually buy pee pads on Amazon, and put them on each corner. At the end of the day - just picking up those pads.
I have a 5 year old ferret that pees and poops everywhere how do i get them to stop. He is my gfs but we just moved in together and she never had them on a good schedule or was strict on their pooping. She just let them do their own thing. How do i stop
Flex Carmichael it’s all about consistency. I had to have the same routine with my ferrets when litter training them. I would not let them out of the cage to play until they went to the bathroom in the litter box. I also have multiple litter boxes. One in the cage and a few spread out where they play. And when they were out playing if I saw them back up into a corner and lift their tail I would pick them up and put them in the litter box. Sometimes they would try to get out over and over and I would just have to putting them back in over and over until they went to the bathroom. It may take a while since your ferret has not really had to use the litter box and it may be a long process, but if you’re patient and consistent it then your ferret should pick it up pretty quickly. Ferrets are really smart and catch on to stuff pretty quick. Try not to get mad or raise your voice, the ferret won’t respond well and it could make it worse and when he/she uses the little box, praise her or give her a treat. It’s kind of like training a puppy to go outside.
It’s a double critter nation, but if you can get a double ferret nation it may be better. The two cages are pretty much the same except the ferret nations bar spacing is a little wider than the critter nation. Also, the bars on the ferret nation are vertical instead of horizontal so the ferrets can’t climb them. My ferrets don’t really climb their critter nation, but I know there are some that do. I got the critter nation because I could have it shipped quicker than the ferret nation. At the time I didn’t want to wait three weeks to get my cage and getting the critter nation was faster. Both cages are absolutely great I’ve had this cage since 2018 and I love it it is so easy to clean. amzn.to/3ENqwFb
Great informative video. My young boy caught on real quick. But now when my older girl goes to use the litter box he wants to check it out so she will leave and sometimes potty in other places. I have learned to use 2 so she can run to the second box.
Im so disappointed at this moment , ive been watching video how to litter train my ferret he’s been doing good for the last few week until this week came hes been pooping every where and pee everywhere i dont know what to do i have two litter box outside and inside the cage and as of now both litter was poop empty ! Any adviceee much appreciated! Thanks!
My first two ferrets regressed in little box training when I got the two younger ones, and we had to start again. I don’t think it’s to uncommon in the beginning for them to go backwards a little. My ferrets also don’t use the little box 100% of the time. I would say most of the time they do, but sometimes they just do what they want. But what I ended up having to do when I was litter box training is only allow them access to one level of my ferret cage until they stopped pooping in the corners without a little box. I also piled extra pieces of fabric, towels or anything soft in all the corners without little boxes. I noticed they wouldn’t poop on anything they saw as a bed. I sometimes would tie the extra fabric to the sides of the cage so they couldn’t move it and made it so it wasn’t flat or ideal for them to back up and poop. To help with them pooping outside the cage, I made sure or tried to wait for them to poop as soon as they woke up before l let them out and then I would just have to watch them like a hawk to see when they looked like they were going to go and pick them up and put them in the litter box. They would try to get out or pretend like they went, but I just put them back in over and over until they actually used the box.

Hello I’m kinda late but Ik scents are bad for ferrets but I’m gonna be getting a ferret and I’m really excited but the paper pellets I seen always say light fresh scent IM VERY SLOW when it comes to reading but in it a natural scent or is it still bad for them
Hi, your right scents are not good for ferrets. The bag I get normally says fragrance free. With the bags that say “natural scent”, I would just look on the bag to see the if there are any chemicals added. The only natural scent litter that I can think of where the words “natural scent” means there is no scent is added is pine litter, which some people do not recommended for ferrets because of the oils in pine. Although, the oils are supposed to be removed when they make pine into pellet litter.
@@FerretTails okay!! Thank u a lot the one I found was paper pellet 25 lb sopresh odor control paper pellet cat litter and it says cat litter with baking soda and a fresh clean scent. do u think that would be a good one ? or do u have any in mind
@@johnnysabala9194 I use the 25 pound So Phresh fragrance free cat litter. Or I use this one from petco. But no matter what I always get the bag for cats because you get more for less money than you do if you get the one that’s labeled for small pets. www.petsmart.com/cat/litter-and-waste-disposal/litter/exquisicat-naturals-paper-cat-litter---natural-fragrance-free-5219992.html
I would not use the fresh scent, the fresh scent is scented and I really don’t recommend anything with scent in it for ferrets. It’s bad for them to breath any of that in.
Karlie Reneé I don’t feed raw. Even though it’s highly recommend, my ferrets are so picky and I am nervous about try to switch them. I currently feed Stella and Chewys Duck Duck Goose freeze dried cat food and mix of Wysong Epigen 90 digestive support and Zupreem (no corn). They also like the Stella and Chewy chicken.
Some of the paper pellets are dusty. My favorite kind come from pet smart, but I get them in the cat section because all pet stores seem to up charge the ones specified for ferrets. The truth is, it’s all the same (my friend works there). And I always get scent free.
Avery Morton I think one good way may be explaining that ferrets do really well with a playmate and it’s good for them to have a ferret friend. I started with one (weasel) and went back a few days later and got his sister (Lucy). It really made all the difference, they love play bing together and a lot of people recommend getting at least two ferrets so they have a companion. Especially in times when we are not around like when we go to work or school or wherever.
Ferret Tails thank u! I have explained to them that they do very well with friends but they say that we just have to many animals and they smell even more with 2
I have 2 ferrets but a quad size cage. If I block off the top and they have just the bottom which is 2 cage bottoms. Is that good? Or is that too much room for them to train?
You could definitely try it. If you find they are still having lot of accidents you could maybe cut the space in half. One of the things that worked really well for me was making sure that all the corners were filled either with a litter box or something super soft like fleece or beds. They typically won’t not poop where they sleep, I actuality got some fleece scraps and cut and tied it to the corners of cage so they couldn’t move it away with their feet and then use the corner to poop. It didn’t take very long for them to use the litter box pretty consistently. Don’t get me wrong I would love to tell you that my ferrets use the litter box 100% of the time but they don’t, there are times where they still poop on the floor, it’s rare, but it happens. Although they never poop in their cage anymore except for in the litter box that I keep in there.
@@FerretTails thank you for the response. I took in 2 ferrets and they it sometimes. Mostly not tho 😂 we clean their litter box and the flooring and they just poop and pee on the floor immediately then use the litter box 😂
What are your thoughts on a raw diet? I got a ferret 6 weeks ago for my daughter and we have been feeding him the Marshall brand pellets, but am trying to switch to the Wysong brand.
Congrats on your new baby! I personally don’t feed raw, it can be tricky making sure you’re giving them everything they need to be healthy. I feed my ferrets Stella and Chewy freeze dried Duck Duck Goose for cats, a chicken soup mix from The Pampered Ferrer and a combo of kibbles, Wysong Epigen 90 DS and Orijen cat and kitten (I may be switching this soon) Orijen recently changed their recipe and it’s said to not be good as it was) For a raw diet they have to have a specific amount of heart, muscle meats, liver etc. But there are a lot of people who feed raw who are honestly much more educated on it than me, mainly because I don’t use that feeding method. Sam from @MyFunkyFerrets is super sweet and very knowledgeable on raw feeding, so is Bryn from Pazu and Friends. She use to offer online courses in raw feeding, but I don’t think she does that anymore.
I have a question what are those blankets/covers you have on the floor or your cage? And where do you get them? I have Blankets for them but they dig at it :/
First name Last name most of the blankets in their cage I made from left over fabric, it’s just two pieces of fleece sewn together. Or I also use those thin fleece throw blankets from like Walmart or places like that.
They poop about 3-4 times a day. My ferrets poop almost every they wake up and they get up several times throughout the day. They also metabolize food very fast. That is a main reason why they poop so mucg
I got 4 of my ferrets from Petco in 2018, and the younger two I got from people who decided to rehome their ferrets due their busy schedules and not being able to give them all the time and attention they need. However, due to a recent outbreak of Distemper at places like Marshalls farms (US ferret mill type breeder) ferrets have been very hard to find in pet stores. There are several legitimate ferret breeders in the US. I included a link to a list of them. The wait list probably long, but to be honest a ferret from a breeder tends to be more healthy long term than a ferret that comes from a place like Marshall’s. Although all of my ferrets came from Marshall’s. To be honest, I learned a lot about Marshall’s after I got my ferrets. Marshall’s has been known to be a lot like a puppy mill and they just mass produce ferrets despite the health of the animals. Sadly, the demand for ferrets is much higher than the number of US breeders that sell them, and Marshalls is the main supplier of ferrets for US pet stores. www.ferret.org/links/bdrMemberships.html

@@FerretTails okay thank u so much 🙏🏼
Your ferrets are so cute! How old are they? My ferret isn't that big at all
do you feed raw? or what do you use for your ferrets food wise
I found that kind of litter to be half dust but I got the greed back is that one you have any different?
Some of the paper pellets are dusty. My favorite kind come from pet smart, but I get them in the cat section because all pet stores seem to up charge the ones specified for ferrets. The truth is, it’s all the same (my friend works there). And I always get scent free.
Who else noticed the third ferret in the background while she was showing us the only ones she had XD
Avery Morton I have four total. I but getting them all in one video can be tough 😂
Ferret Tails oh lol. I have a single one and am trying to convince my parents to get me a second one. Any advice??
Mostly not tho 😂 we clean their litter box and the flooring and they just poop and pee on the floor immediately then use the litter box 😂
what litter box is that?
It’s the Marshalls high back litter box, it’s great for ferrets! amzn.to/3JgqBnw
Mine poop were it sleep 😔
What are your thoughts on a raw diet? I got a ferret 6 weeks ago for my daughter and we have been feeding him the Marshall brand pellets, but am trying to switch to the Wysong brand.
Congrats on your new baby! I personally don’t feed raw, it can be tricky making sure you’re giving them everything they need to be healthy. I feed my ferrets Stella and Chewy freeze dried Duck Duck Goose for cats, a chicken soup mix from The Pampered Ferrer and a combo of kibbles, Wysong Epigen 90 DS and Orijen cat and kitten (I may be switching this soon) Orijen recently changed their recipe and it’s said to not be good as it was)
For a raw diet they have to have a specific amount of heart, muscle meats, liver etc.
How much does one poop a day😂
They poop about 3-4 times a day. My ferrets poop almost every they wake up and they get up several times throughout the day. They also metabolize food very fast. That is a main reason why they poop so mucg
@@FerretTails ah okay thnx. I'm still getting one whahah
Where did u get your ferret?
