    After today
    You speak the new
    With every word you walk
From the comfort of my hands
    And after all
    We fight the war
Of enemies unseen and here we are in Jerome
    These words today
    How many times I'd smile
If you'd remember me in this song
    There was a girl
    She fell in love
    And on the sundried
Land they settled in and started again
    And when they sleep
    She'd sing this melody
    To her beloved sons
    Forgotten words from Japan

The incorporation of the Banjo towards the end of the song is incredible. Not just because of the regional reference (Camp Jerome was in Arkansas), but because as an instrument, its sounds fairly similar to the Shamisen, a traditional Japanese instrument.

For some reason when I listen to this song I think of a story of this guy who hated this kid when he was in school and that kid ended up growing up to become the president and he still hated him and hated his ideals even more so in a press conference he sits on top of a roof with a sniper in an attempt to assassinate the president but then through his scopes he sees the same woman that was the president’s girlfriend when they were in school and he’s seen how long they’ve been together and how devastated she would be if the president died so he doesn’t pull the trigger

Can anyone translate the Japanese portion for me?

      Not 100% sure but roughly:
"I feel sadness but my friend will forget my heart by sunset"

Actually it’s “Even if I touch sadness, each new day is my heart’s friend”.
