    My first camera was a Zenith E, some 52 years ago, a brilliant camera. I cannot remember the lens I had with it. Used for several years and at that time developed and printed my own photos, using a Zenith enlarger and loading my own film useful when you only wanted a few shots. Despite all the years of photography I have now decided to learn the correct way to do it with your help.

      The same here, a gift from my parents on getting a few O levels. Eventually the shutter blind gave up. I think that the lens was a Helios 50mm.

    Another great video! Zenit TTL - Made in USSR - my first film camera from late 1970-s. I still have it, sitting dusty on a shelf. The lens is fixed (58mm) with ap 2. The Eastern block was full of them; they're heavy (nearly 2 lb of weight and tough as a tank!) and, given a decent film, not that bad at all (some great portraits). No excuses! Looking forward to the Zenit challenge :-) .

    Well, believe it or not it was my first SLR camera back in 1977. It has 42mm threaded lens with the aperture pin and the cloth horizontal shutter. The early models did not have the pin for aperture so when you set the aperture the image comes dims to dark in the viewfinder.
    And yes it was made in Russia. Gemrman's had similar name Practica., similar to the original Asahi Pentax or Chinon.

      The first adjustable camera I had, in the 60s, was a russian Fed4l rangefinder camera, followed by a Practica and a Zenit. All of which were relatively affordable introductory cameras which, nevertheless, were capable of excellent results. Sadly all 3 have long since died due to mechanical failures caused by heavy use.

    The Zenith E was a Soviet camera. I bought mine back in 1976. With over 40 years of taking photos and using a medium format camera nowadays, after many years of using Leicas, I have to say that the best photo I ever took, and which incidentally won a prize (the photo was taken in Chichicaztenango in Guatemala in 1979) was with this Zenith E. So much for all this modern, expensive and sophisticated equipment nowadays...

    Zeinth is a russian camera. When i was a kid 14 y my father bought me one and a Praktica (obviously film cameras), because he wanted me to learn photography. He was a photographer, but me not. Well, i took some good worth pictures with those cameras in a line of 6 years with waste of a lot of film rolls (according to him), but i never made to become a photographer as he wished and he was a photographer.
    Not quite long ago, i decided to see what if i followed path my father wanted for me, bought some cameras with some not expensive lens and also one Nikon d3100 used. I learned in hard way how to bypass equipment limitations with a Canon SX60 HS (bridge camera in manual mode) and Nikon D3100, but now i can saw I'm quite enjoying much more my D3100 than D5500... spending time to get a shut of 14 megapixel worth as 24 megapixel or more. Don't get me wrong... I'm not a photographer, but a simple programmer spending free time after a "What IF" of my father. :)

    I had 2 zenit first one was a 11 em the sensor was above the lens which was a pain because the meter was on the top of the camera and the other camera was the 12 ex but the sensor was in camera and when you have the correct exposure the two leds flashed but the both gave cracking photos and is a ideal starter camera as it was fully manual

  • @kaid3566
    @kaid3566 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I learned on my dad's old Zenit, and it was invaluable for me to practice with an all-manual camera, I think. I would go to the woods and shoot a roll or two, same scenes with different aperture & shutter settings, taking notes and keeping track of what I did in each photo, then (a week or two later, after I'd finally gotten the prints) I'd go back and examine each one, comparing the exposure, focus, etc. I believe that I just had one 50mm lens for this beast of a camera, which was limiting, but I really didn't really see it that way. I wonder if I still have that camera somewhere, though I haven't seen it in years...

    Great video guys,in this day and age of the "All singing & dancing camera's" I think sometimes we need to get back to basics and relearn the art of photography either by switching to manual and using prime lenses. I often leave my Nikon D810 at home, grab my 30 yr old Pentax ME super c/w 50mm f1.7 lens loaded up with some asa I 200 film and see what happens. I must admit that finding film seems to be increasingly difficult.

    Indeed as below, the Zenit (late model TTL model i think, 1976-85) is a USSR (Soviet Union) camera probably made by Krasnogorsky Zavod (KMZ). The mount is a M42 screw mount and the KMZ Helios 44M lens (44 M => "M" standands for M42 mount version) is a 58mm lens f2, with 8 blades. This lens is sharp to very sharp and can be used on modern DSLR and mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7, Panasonic GH5, Olympus etc. The adapters M42 => MFT/NEX/EOS/... are cheap and run between 6€ and 25€. The camera's and lenses are easy to find on ebay.

    My first camera was a Praktica MTL3 with a 50mm f1.8 Zeiss Tessar lens, built like a tank in East Germany and bought in December 1978 for my 21st Birthday. Fully manual with a match needle exposure meter. No auto modes. This was when you had to LEARN how to take photographs and understand the relationship between Film Speed, Shutter Speed and Aperture. I took some of my best photo's with this and scanned versions are still doing well in Club competitions even today. It also survived falling off the back of a scooter in Crete in 1980 with just a slight dent in the hotshoe. My mate who got me interested in photography, started with a Zenith EM. Perhaps a truer reflection of the abilities of both cameras would have been if you had limited yourselves to manual exposure, manual focusing and 400 ISO? This would have put the Canon and the Zenit(h) on a par with each other and IMHO would have been a truer comparison as the Zenit does not have any Auto modes (in fact some of the early ones required the use of a separate hand held meter,) and would have been restricted to a single film speed.

    • @bfs5113
      @bfs5113 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@photodom2000 For landscape? What about wide angle lens on camera held above the head and fired up the motor drive. Our good old day solution for not having flip-out LCD screen and eye-tracking.
      I started out in the same year with a Nikon F2A and still recalled some of the problem solving and time wasted in doing things such as processing color prints, from the earliest chemicals.
      No preview, buy a MF with Polaroid Back. Need higher resolution or able to change film with different ASA/ISO, buy a MF with film backs. Silent shutter, buy a Leica. Motor drive, buy Nikon F2 or Canon F1. No TTL or automatic, buy incident, spot and/or flash meters. Large handle mount flashes with external battery pack. Buy top of the line SLR with different focusing screen option to avoid split image from black out, while using slow zooms.
      Not enough self training materials or sources. Buying and storing same batch of films & color print papers in the refrigerator. Smooth background? Buy a Nikon 105/135 DC lens, soft focus Canon 85 f/2.8 lens or soft focus filter. Buying a darkroom color analyzer from saving to print test strips or prints.
      Now, one's wonderful journey with shooting films today probably involved in buying any SLR of the past, including the most expensive ones and vintage lenses, for a song. Then scan the processed film with a DSLR. It is way different from the 'good' old days and much more similar to war stories without the horrors.
      Enjoyable for the younger generation, but I for one, don't have enough time to waste to revisit the past, since there are plenty of newer stuff waiting for me to explore. Personally, I rather shoot with my 12 years old Nikon D3 than my four decades old Nikon F2A or Hasselblad 500 C/M. :)

The Russian vs Soviet thing well I guess you are correct. On the lens versions, some were M manual versions that stepped down the aperture whilst viewing for focusing. Some were A or auto versions that had a pin that always opened the aperture to the widest one whilst viewing. When the shutter was pressed the aperture would stop down to the chosen aperture. All the lenses were M42mm screw the same as the Zeiss lenses that were sold with the Praktica MTL cameras at the time.....forgive my Russian / Soviet blunder I am getting on a bit !.
