Always respected the playing ability and killer instinct from both these players. But notice the contrast in styles here. Buddy Hall uses a much shorter bridge than Earl does on most shots and yet he shoots the lights out with that short bridge. And as the years progressed Earl's bridge became longer and longer for most shots. He is using the shortest bridge I've seen him use on average in this video. I can' t believe this is from 1988. Wow, what a find.

players used a shorter bridge back then. from mosconis' time up until early 90's. the cloth was a lot slower most places. notice how much harder they are stroking compared to todays players? because the cloth is so slow. a shorter bridge allows you to shoot harder under control. big difference from then to today. is the reason why there are more and more good players today. back then you actually had to have a great stroke to play well. now anybody can gently poke the cue ball 5 rails.

Earl really wasn't playing very well in this match.. so far at least. Second time he's missed the 8. He starts out well, but he seems to rush himself and ends up getting an awkward angle on a shot towards the end of the rack, and then it just gets worse and worse for him.
