Yaldabaoth is easily my favorite final boss of the series. It looks awesome, is very tense when all it's weapons are up, isn't a complete fatty like most final rpg bosses, and has a great theme. Okumura on the other hand, may be the most evil character in the series, he basically murders other companies that are competition with Shido's help, sells his daughter to an abuser, and worst of all, doesn't even have a good boss fight. Also congratulations on graduating!

Great video, Alex! Out of the dozens of JRPGs I've played, Persona 5 Royal is my personal favorite, and its boss roster is one of the best in the genre in my opinion. My ranking: 1. Shido 2. Maruki 3. Madarame 4. Yaldabaoth 5. Akechi 6. Sae 7. Kamoshida 8. Kaneshiro 9. Cendrillion 10. Holy Grail 11. Cognitive Wakkaba 12. Okumura Okumura was already my least favorite boss in the vanilla version, but Royal made his fight even worse since the robots could now flee and get replaced by reinforcements. I'd almost rather slog through the Frigid Outskirts again than have a re-match with him (emphasis placed on "almost"). Madarame was one of my least favorite bosses in vanilla, but the introduction of the second phase and reduction of the first exponentially improved the battle in my eyes. Maruki put up a great final boss battle, even though the second and third phases dragged the fight down a bit. Hilariously, Joker's fist-fight with Maruki reminded me of the infamous slap-fight in FF7 between Tifa and Scarlet atop the Sister Ray. Lol. If you play Super Smash Bros. games, you'll also definitely recognize quite a bit of the music. Earthbound is also the earliest turn-based JRPG I can think of to get rid of random encounters in favor of enemies being visible on screen in dungeons, etc., as it did that a year before Chrono Trigger. It's a bizarre, quirky game, but it oozes charm like few other games out there. Also, as a future tip for the Okumura fight, bring Magatsu Izanagi. Mandala melts straight through the green robots.
Doesnt the okumura fight have a 30 minute limit? The wiki confirms this. It's still an obscene amount of time to waste on a single bossfight, only to get timed out anyway, but it's not as ridiculous as losing after 45 minutes like you said. Additionally they made Okumura's fight way more tedious. Previously you were able to wittle down the health of his drones, but now they swap out every time they get low in numbers or HP, massively prolonging the bossfight. I had to swap to Merciless just so I'd get the damage to destroy them.

Yep, correct. Random tangent, I hate how people will complain about P5 being too easy, but then complain about Okumura being too difficult. Persona fan moment.
I never noticed this before but shido even gets the yujiro hanma pose at the last phase. I may have to rethink how I feel about Shido just a bit. Also idk if it was meant to be yujiros pose but it just looked really similar, idk if that came before or after either so im just wording it like that for the sake of laziness and not looking up manga dates or whatever.
I agree with your top rankings. Maruki's fight had the best story but was very underwhelming as a boss fight with how scripted it was. Meanwhile Shido's fight is really good for atmosphere and similarly strong for story, not nearly as nuanced as Kamoshida or Maruki, but cathartic to say the least. I wasn't actually a fan of the 1 on 1 fight, I thought it to be cheesy? I think it was added into Royal, I couldn't remember doing the same thing in base P5. Like... if you think about it, yes, he is Joker's number one enemy, but to him, Joker is just one of a million victims. I don't see Shido ever acknowledging him, much like how he never acknowledged Akechi.

I can see how the design is a bit bland, especially if the fight tends to drag on for too long. Especially considering it seems to take place in a bank vault using a robot prop that takes up most of the screen, and both are the same kind of bland metallic grey. I imagine that can't be very stimulating.
i know this video is like a year and a half old at this point but i do want to point out that royal actively made Okumura's fight worse by adding the ability for the robots to flee from stress and reset the wave
Okumura is a good boss because it actually expects you to use the baton pass mechanics for the fight. Skill issue. Also, idk if you did mention this during the video but elemental items are genuinely useful for Okumura if you can't hit a certain element. Get your baton pass chain up and deal big damage.

My rankings for Persona 5 Royal Bosses. 12. Akechi (This fight is so stupid. I don't care what anybody says, FUCK THIS FIGHT! And Im not sayingthat for gameplay purposes it's bottom soly for story purposes. ) 11. Shadow Kaneshiro 10. Shadow Okumura (I thought this fight wasn't that hard, but i still found this fight a taaaad annoying.) 9. Cognitive Wakaba 8. Holy Grail 7. Shadow Madarame 6. Kasumi ( I love Kasumi as a character and I legit didn't wanna fight her.) 5. Shadow Sae 4. Shadow Shido 3. Shadow Kamoshida (It felt so satisfying kicking his ass.) 2. Yaldaboath 1. Maruki/Adam Kadmon
For me, Wakkaba fight is the worst one, because if you fail to kill her when she fell for the second time, it only remains to scratch what remains of her life bar little by little without any other interaction and it takes a lot of time. It's really boring and broke the rythm of the fight. Maruki's fight is not that good for me too. The first part of the fight is a great boss fight, there are no problem with it. It's the second part of the fight with that giant dude which has greatly disappointed me mainly because it's a scripted fight. I hoped for a fight worthy of Yaldabaoth which was challenging and I had only that. In addition, the many cuts with the cutscenes that constantly interrupted the music really broke the mood of the fight. It looks like they cut out the scenes and glued them next to each other without making transitions between them. It was so frustrating. As for Okumura, he really is one of my favorites bosses of the game. First, the fact that it is the boss who sacrifices all his employees to save his ass is really accurate. Then, the fight is really very strategic and requires us to exploit all the mechanics of the game to succeed in defeating it, not to mention the chronometer that puts us the pressure behind. He is the only boss who pushes us to the limit and forces us to develop a real strategy to defeat him. I wish the next bosses kept at least that level of difficulty. Because Sae... Well, her first part was great but when you already know the gimmick, she is probably the weaker boss of the game. (Is it even possible to not kill her in one turn at her second part ? I never saw any of her attacks in P2...) and Shino, I was able to one shot his P2 so badly that it already killed his P3 too... So I just saw the flying lion morphing into the pyramid before dying. Thank you, special attack.😑 Fortunatly, his next phases were more interesting and save him for the garbage bin. On the other hand I think that the first three bosses were the best : Kaneshiro was actually funny. The fact that we fight a frog who morph into a fly before using a mecha-pig is absolutly hilarious for me. But he had interesting gimmick like the fact that we have to use our items as decoy to reverse the fight in our favor was great like the fact that he will pay guards to protect him. And the fact that we will win the fight not because we will beat him but because he wasted all his money and wasn't able to use any of his abilities against us was genious. Madarame, I really liked his first fight except that he was a little bit too weak, even when I had to learn all his gimmick the first time. So it was frustrating to not be able to see his special action. You really need to let him act if you want to see it and it can be dangerous because he can wipe out your time anytime. That's really his weak point. The second part can really be tedious and difficult but there are some strategies to be able to turn the tide making this fight more interesting that it seems. And for me, Kamoshida is really the best boss of the game. Because he is really the more disgusting boss of the game, makin you really furious against him. So when the time to kick his ass finally comes, you really is hyped to finally beat him but things go terribly wrong : he becomes this monstrous thing that impresses us the first time we discover it and the fight seems to be very hard and long with all his own gimmicks. So the fight really becomes epic when you will finally able to execute the special action of the fight, especially when the music is synchro and flies away at the same time. I had so many chills the first time I beat him, it was crazy. And no other boss in the game had been as intense as this one, unfortunately. For Cendrillon and Akechi, both of them were good fights for me, with lot of twists making them really enjoyable. But this is true that Cendrillon was a little bit too long for nothing when Akechi's fight had no downtime. But I really liked both of them. And yeah, Yaldabaoth was really a great and challenging fight, I really liked it even if all it took was just to debuff it, buff us and throw our most powerful attacks to defeat him without any good strategy behind. But fight was really stressfull by moment and the final was really grandiose. It's a shame they failed to do something as good with Maruki's final.
Yaldabaoth is easily my favorite final boss of the series. It looks awesome, is very tense when all it's weapons are up, isn't a complete fatty like most final rpg bosses, and has a great theme.
On the other hand I think that the first three bosses were the best :
Kaneshiro was actually funny.

@@Duplucky5 You wrote an entire essay without citing sources, that is poor practice.
