I talked to Kirk once. He said the flying scenes were filmed upside down so's to hide the suspension wires even more so. Trivia: He appears in the Superman movie that featured Christopher Reeve. Alyn is they guy on the train reading the newspaper. Nice guy, spent his final years as a handyman in the North Hollywood Ca area. A wealth of knowledge on old Hollywood.

From a small boy i have loved everything about superman, had my whole bedroom decorated in superman stuff from wallpaper to bedsheets. I was fortunate to meet Noel Neill twice at Toy Cons. I still have a signed copy of her book and an original Topps trading card showing her holding her dog. Very sweet lady.
If you're ever back in Illinois, visit Plano, where they filmed a lot of Man of Steel (2013). They also filmed a Larry the Cable Movie "Witless Protection" there. The next town over is a town called Sandwich (my home town), where you can dine in a rail car used by Teddy Roosevelt on his 1912 Presidential campaign. If you visit in early September, you can also visit the Sandwich Fair, a 185-acre county fair that started annually in 1888. In the downtown area is the Sandwich Opera House, which was built in 1878. A lot of quaint Midwestern history around the area!

Also Richard Pryor stood in his outfit I believe superman type wardrobe on o wooden Pepsi case to make him appear taller than he was I guess in downtown Calgary back in the early 80's when movie production beseiged southern Alberta also some field scenes done around black diamond farm rural area I believe!

The have a Superman Celebration every summer in June. There are usually celebrities from the movies or other WB shows. It's a good time to come as there are a lot of events. It's like a mini-con. My girls and I live across the river and try to go every year.

lol My dad would love this too. He used to have loads of Superman comics, but he sold them years ago, and he's been a fan since the TV show. I believe he watched when he was a kid. There was one shot in your video of a garbage can with a scene of the film (him/Superman as a child lifting a car) on it, my dad had that garbage can lol! I got into watching the films because he watched them. I'm not the biggest of fans, but Superman IS iconic. I never knew this Metropolis, IL existed. When I hear the word Metropolis, I think of the film from 1927. I vaguely remember that film from a class in HS, but that's what comes up in my head anyway. lol This was awesome!

Those crystals from the Fortress of Solitude blew me away the most. Who wouldnt give every dime they've got to have the glowing green crystal that he finds in the barn, and throws at the ice. Seriously, to have the movie one (which I know was not in this collection) would be super epic.
What an epic year for movies Grease, The Buddy Holly Story, Every Which Way But Loose, The Boys From Brazil, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers......Superman! I was 8, I remember kryptonite being sold in little boxes at the concession stand.
Now that was awesome also the giant grocery guy in front of the supermarket took me back to the early 80s in Memphis we had Giant foods and those giants holding the bag of groceries was a common sight.Great work Adam!

My Dad remembers paying 12 cents to see movies at the old Nemo Theatre in Baltimore, MD back when he was a boy in the early 1940's! The theatre building still exists and has been used as a church for many years.
"...Faster than a speeding bullet...more powerful than a locomotive...able to leap tall buildings in a single bound..." I just loved watching the "Adventures of Superman" with George Reeves when I was growing up! I still do! (By the way, in the opening scene of "Gone With The Wind" George played one of the red-haired Tarleton twins fussing over spoiled southern belle Scarlett O'Hara.) I always thought it interesting that Christopher Reeve was picked to play Superman in the late 1970's early 1980's. He and George almost have the same name. The first "Superman" movie with Christopher Reeve was great but I love the sequel, "Superman II" when the Man of Steel fights General Zod, Ursa, and the big guy, I think his name was Nod. Or was it Non? Gene Hackman was superb in the role of villain Lex Luthor. I love the Superman musical score by John Williams too. I just love watching all your travel vlogs, especially through these little towns across the Mid-West and the South which have all but disappeared from our society today. You are making sure that they are being remembered through your visits!
Hope you had a good time in Metropolis. If you're ever back here you might want to look up the grave of the Birdman of Alcatraz. He's buried in a Cemetery here (Metropolis ). and the Second weekend of June there's a Superman celebration .

I passed through this town on vacation and I remember seeing the Superman statue.
My dad raised me on Superman and I have a replica of Christopher Reeve's superman cape hanging on my wall.

Every time I head through Illinois I have to check in to The Superman Museum. The town has a lot of closed down places, But it's interesting to go there
When I saw this vlog I almost said to myself: "I am still asleep, dreaming" because I have always assumed the sites to be totally fictional. Pretty cool stuff! I wish a speedy recovery for that small town!
Adam, you are so funny. I really love this film. Maybe because I visited Metropolis myself about 18 years ago when attending a convention in Peoria. So much of what you show us wasn't there then...just the giant statue. Thanks wlwal1 for sending me this video.

im so glad you go to these places that i only get to drive by being a truck driver. but you forgot 1 more thing the water tower with the picture on it.
My Dad remembers paying 12 cents to see movies at the old Nemo Theatre in Baltimore, MD back when he was a boy in the early 1940's! The theatre building still exists and has been used as a church for many years.

I just loved watching the "Adventures of Superman" with George Reeves when I was growing up! I still do! (By the way, in the opening scene of "Gone With The Wind" George played one of the red-haired Tarleton twins fussing over spoiled southern belle Scarlett O'Hara.)
I always thought it interesting that Christopher Reeve was picked to play Superman in the late 1970's early 1980's. He and George almost have the same name. The first "Superman" movie with Christopher Reeve was great but I love the sequel, "Superman II" when the Man of Steel fights General Zod, Ursa, and the big guy, I think his name was Nod. Or was it Non? Gene Hackman was superb in the role of villain Lex Luthor. I love the Superman musical score by John Williams too.
I just love watching all your travel vlogs, especially through these little towns across the Mid-West and the South which have all but disappeared from our society today. You are making sure that they are being remembered through your visits!
Hope you had a good time in Metropolis. If you're ever back here you might want to look up the grave of the Birdman of Alcatraz. He's buried in a Cemetery here (Metropolis ). and the Second weekend of June there's a Superman celebration .
