  • In this one we are fertilising our forage rye for the first time and checking out what the crop looks like. I talk about what has gone right, wrong and what I would do different in the future knowing that I know now!
I hope that you enjoy it.

Not much other about round here for comparison but ours has really got a shift on with this nice weather and the fert on it. Should be a lot on it but the time we come to silage. 🤞

Strip graze it will electric and they'll not waste much. Works well to. Rocket fuel for cows after calving. We sow kale/fodder beet after we have grazed it or mown(sometimes) around May

Hey Ciaran! We showed it towards the end of September but next time I would go towards the beginning and get it moving earlier. Like I
Said, you could always graze it to knock it back a bit.

Another great video James. I assume you'll do another dressing of fert? How much fertiliser will the crop get in total? We've got 20 acres in this year due to being desperately short of fodder, had a word with our agronomist and he reckons 80kg of N. I'm also going to use some AN left over from last year, 34.5%, so 220kg/ha of actual product.

Thanks Tom. Yes I’ll do another dressing once it turns up! (Fee coming Tomorrow actually). Seed company told me 100kg N but I have applied much and I think 80kg N is more than enough. This dressing was 25kg N so will look at another 55kg N or so pretty soon.
I think your pretty much bang on at 80kg N.

What is the advantage of forage rye over grass ?, can you take second cuts ?, and is it just a yearly lay ?, loving going back over your videos 👌👌👌

So it’s a one cut wonder but the selling point was quantity produced. In theory it should produce as much, if not more in one cut than 3 cuts of a westerwold grass and still allow me to get a maize or kales etc in afterwards. The idea being we produce 75% of all winter feed off one small area of ground. However it’s very much an experiment so time will tell with it.
