really think you're onto something at 1:42:00 since he has a song as Devon Hendryx called, I ♥You Hip-Hop But I Cant Be Your Girlfriend. really good catch on the meaning, but we could all be wrong as he just talkin bout his homegirls 🤷♂ Edit: he's also said that he's bored with Hip-Hop so he could 100% be saying that he's just catching the hip-hop sound in his music, more than he listens to it himself. Its obvious through all of the Rock/Metal references and sounds in this album that he likes that kind of music. we can also see though covers and though his earlier work, and him even saying himself that he likes Pop music. so i think he definitely could be talking about his relationship to the genre.

My fav Peggy album (not heard Cornballs, Ben Carson) and I can easily say this is one of my fav albums of all time, this is the first album of his that fully clicked with me and I adore it to the fullest, maybe because of the production, the fusion of rock and hip-hop works so well here or maybe we get more meat on the content matter this time around from Peggy, the second half of the album has introspection, vulnerability. It all mashes so well for me!
i think cornballs might be peggys favorite, he said the third album was sick no disease on either on or off the drugs. i would definitely give it a listen
You should check out cornballs for sure, but I do think that Jpegmafias older album are heavy on flexing experimentation, but his strength as a song writer wasn't quite there yet, or at least not as good as it would go on to be.
I think a tiny beautiful detail on I recovered from this is, that at the end he stops talking about a "bitch" breaking him but rather this "girl" which shows him being more tender and emotional overall and towards that person.

For "New Black City" it samples Vince Staple's song "Señorita". That chorus from Future is on it. I like that it features Vince too. Love his music as well. Him, Tyler, Q, Kendrick, all from LA and incredible. So many more. All TDE, most of OF. Earl especially. Amazing.

Excellent reaction video - thanks so much for putting up the lyrics, I love to read them and they make it all the more meaningful. And love the thought you put into your analysis. This album is breathtakingly beautiful, honestly!
I noticed the difference in "don't rely on other men" too. The album version definitely gets a little more epic. Jealous to hear the story you got a shout out for your reaction to veteran (new to your channel 👋). I wouldn't have handled that gracefully either lol. Peggy seems like someone I woulda been friends with in highschool, an outsider but entirely comfortable there. His whole approach to music creation is very in line with mine and you connecting him to Aphex Twin is apt. These are people who definitely make music for the joy of it and nothing else. It's weird how you can tell when someone does something out of passion, and it could be nails on a chalk board, and still sound good and make sense when that element of authenticity and passion is present. To clear something up for you, Google "code switching". When he says "I feel corny unless I'm on code" he's saying he feels corny unless he's speaking like how other black people speak to each other. Code switching is when a black person changes how they speak normally around other black people, to fit in with the larger society/white people. Don't worry I'm unforgivably white too. I love how you wanted this metal heavy album, and it has plenty of that, but then you are totally in love with how the album mellowed out at the end and was perfect for what it needed to be. I agree entirely.
1:46:32 I don't want to speculate about peggy's life, but as someone who lived in a broken home and never got the care to grow up, this line resonated a lot. People often assume that you're an adult, and to survive you had to grow a lot in certain aspects, but behind all that facade it's just a scared kid in a childlocked car, his past preventing him from actual love, actual heart, actual care
the blending of genres and styles was pulled off without fail, massive W didnt expect anything less tbh. at times its corny as fuck but very self awere which makes it just fun and enjoyable, gets me in a good mood
Either on and off the drugs is the best song of the year, it always makes me emotional. After my gf broke up with me out of nowhere I felt so empty and this song was my comfort spot. I once played this song 20 times at night while standing alone in the beach, it’s incredible
My first listen of LP “this is pretty good but not better than cornballs” me a few listens later “this is the best album I’ve heard in the 2020’s decade”. Pretty much same effect with this album. This is easily my AOTY so far. It isn’t particularly close.
When talking at the end there with 'who would replace him for the number one spot'. I would be really curious to see your reaction to Ghais Guevara. He's an underground rapper, but also kinda of Peggy's school of production-wise. But interestingly, he's considered better lyricist and generally more meaningful writer. His first album 'BlackBolshevic' is only 22 minutes, so would make a great introduction. His second 'There will be no Super Slave' is 45 minutes, and while seen as a bit less wild, also considered more cohesive. It's also my favourite I've heard from him. Both would be great!
Great review Bob, as always! This is such a fire album, the way he composes sounds that would typically not be used in the same song is genius.
