Genius ! In many countries these accessories are ridiculously expensive ! If you mix a small amount of petroleum jelly into the cotton it will penetrate and then be coated by the wax. That will give a longer burn time 👍
I make batches of jute twine cut into 1 1/4” pieces soaked in paraffin wax. I let them cool on parchment paper before spinning them into the SAK corkscrew. They are non toxic, stay in place and light easily by removing and fluffing a tip. Very inexpensive and effective.
very impressed, I've made many cotton fire starters before but it😃 never occurred to me to mold them round the corkscrew of my SAK, great tip, thanks Nikos
Nice video. Could also use strands off of one of those dollar store cotton mops. Also, those cheap orange match holders have a tiny firesteel on the bottom that fits in the cork screw
Great tip, I was thinking to use some jute twine, of the right diameter, waxed as you showed. It might be easier to work with, but I have still to try it. 👍
You can save money but you need some time to make it. For starting fire you can also use a match and make it fireproof. Put a match with a little of the red paper in a cling foil for kitchen use. Roll it up and fix it with a sewing thread, then put it into the cork screw. It works very well. You can also buy a little waterproof container for the sak, but waxed cotton and matches inside.
These are a great idea. Some ideas to maybe improve the process. I would take your micro screwdriver and fit it some full sized corkscrews to see if you can find one that fits. A longer corkscrew would let you make the tinder in one long piece that you could cut to size. (Letting you make multiple tinders at once.) I've also heard that beeswax is also more stable than paraffin and has a higher melting point. If thats true... using beeswax might make the tinder slightly more pocket friendly as well as the wax is less likely to soften as much to body temperature.
for personal amateur use, there is no need for fast production. In fact, its preparation is easier off-camera. I don't know if beeswax is more stable, but it definitely needs a protective cover.Thanks.
@@nikgyver7 - I was thinking for the purposes of making enough pieces for practice you might want multiples you didn't need to hand fit individually to your SAK. But yeah... not having the camera between you and your project would definitely simplify things. Anyway... thanks for the idea!
Nice job. It's a easy and simple task and I'll try to remember . I carry my EDC bag which me I have Bic lighter UCO match safe quick tender and a feral rod.. show the other part is just an emergency backup bushcrafters survival says. 3 is 2 .2 is 1 .1 is none !! I bought the fire ant kit for the two SAK that I have for just that purpose in case of emergency ..😊
What I would do after I have the cotton dipped in wax on there before it completely dries I would find a perfect size, drinking straw that just barely fits over the corkscrew, and I would slowly twist it down so that while the cotton dries, the outside of it will be a very smooth surface, and it will also compact the cotton a little bit more than if you do it like this, and just sort of push it down with your fingers. And then once it’s dry, you can probably easily pull the straw offand the cotton will be more compact in a more perfect shape. I haven’t done it yet, so I don’t know how well it will work but you would think it would work pretty well. Great video and great idea! Thanks.
Very good demonstration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Suggestion, turn on the Close Caption titles. At present the CC icon at the bottom of your video reads, Subtitles/closed captions unavailable. Many folks have hearing difficulties, and your accent makes it a bit difficult understanding you. Thus closed captions titles are extremely helpful. Thank you.
the icon CC is for the viewer to activate the subtitles, not the owner of the channel. For the video to have subtitles available, the owner must have added them, they are not added automatically. After the first dipping in melted wax and molding innthe corkscrew for getting the shape, after its cooled and hard, you dip again in melted wax (coloured wax to mimic the original) and it will be even harder and will last longer it's shape.
No, I don't dip it again in the melted wax because it will unfold, it will lose its shape. If you use melted wax from a colored candle, you will have a colored tinder. You can also choose a colored shrink tube for protection cover, thanks.
I scanned some replies. I read a lot of positive feedback about your information. But you need a better delivery approach. For starters, smile and put some rhythm in your speech.
OR you can twist the mini flat into the cork screw to maintain your glasses and keep a damn lighter in your pocket. I'm just saying. Instant fire. No issue. No lab work. Just a Bic

Awesome, I will have to try this. Thank you very much! I have always wanted the official helix tinders but they are too expensive, way overpriced.
That's why I created this tinder, so everyone can get access to the Helix tinder, thanks.
Maybe it would be a good idea to isolate the knife with some masking tape to prevent vax seeping in.
it is not necessary, the tape is sticky from the wax. The wax comes off with a little rubbing with the hand
Smart idea, you could make them in different colors using candle wax.👍 🕯🔥
it was candle wax,but not colored,this a great idea,thanks.
Brilliant.

Pro tip: I put some heat shrink tubing on the helix so the wax doesn’t flake off
