    Watched my dad do this for years. At 12 yrs old he asked if I wanted to drive. I said quickly, "yep". Hopped over and took off like a fish in water, he just let me keep going. I'm 32 now, 4 kids, work construction to be home every night. Kids never been in a truck and I haven't talked to my dad in years. I miss the sound of a turbo, that hissing sound from splitting gears. One day I'll be in a truck, it's in my blood.

      Not hard at all dude we don’t use the clutch all you gotta do is apply pressure and ease your foot of the gas. it’s called floating the gears, if he takes to long shifting gears it won’t go to the next gear you’ll have to rev the motor to make the rpms line up with the tranny or whatever. I learnt how to drive with a 13 speed now I drive a 10 speed.

      At the very least it gives you something to focus on, running 10+ hours can get a bit dry, if you've got some hills or tight corners i find having to cycle through a few gears helps me stay awake, auto's are dangerous, been running teams for long enough not to like them, you'd shit yourself if you knew how many drivers are half awake in trucks with cruise control rolling down the freeway

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more than that I find. It forces you to be more aware of the road and your surroundings. You want to look ahead, and think ahead, to avoid having to shift down a gear or come to a stop and have to launch again. It also keeps you aware of you speed, since you're more involved in the process that got you that speed.

    • @OGLYASDI
      @OGLYASDI 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ I totally agree with what you said, I drove school bus for over 20 years and about 16 of those years was in a stick shift….I learned exactly what my bus was capable of doing and which gear to be in for the conditions, be it either weather or traffic…I also was an instructor who made sure my trainees understood the importance of being in the right gear for the situation at hand so they would always be in control of their bus at all times. So yes, you’re right when you say it’s much more than that! 👍🏼☺️

    I drove a little back in the 80's, and the 13 speed Fuller Road Ranger was very popular. It takes practice, but you eventually get the hang of it. Downshifting takes some finesse, but it too is doable with time and practice. What always blew my mind was the dump truck drivers who used a two lever "Brownie" shifter. They had to use both hands, with one arm through the steering wheel. Never figured that one out....

    My dad had me driving a manual when I was 10. My first car was a 67 GTO. It was an automatic with a hurst dual gate shifter. Wasn’t a manual but it was fun. I’ve never driven a automatic truck. I guess I would. I’m a trucker. If it’s a truck I’ll drive it. I started on an old consolidated freight. So long ago I don’t remember it’s number of gears. Seems it was 7 it didn’t have a split. My first time down the vine I was in a 10 speed without jakes. Less than halfway down my brakes were smokin’ and my partner said “well Mark, get your foot of that pedal and start shiftin’ quick we’re goin’ for a ride.” That was a ride! I remember it was just fun. I’ve driven a lot of trucks with different transmissions. It’s been a fun drive 😊.

Hell the sticker on the dash if it's still there will tell u this. I like how u started the video with OK u want to drive a big truck but u want an automatic that's cute. 😂😂😂. Block change them and your sorted, shame shit drivers and through maintenance has driven the industry to auto. The trucks will never preform to it full potential as auto. That’s why we keep the stick shift on the low loaders, right driver right truck unbeatable. Glad I served my time as a kid and through into haulage been taught by old school drivers. In a 13 speed your first for gears are on the low-end of the transmission. Notice the black switch is in the down position. Once you want to go to fist you flick the black switch up put you on the top side of the transmission. As you go through and every other gear from there up you flip the red switch forward which splits the gear. Essentially the red splitter throws you into another gear. I’m honestly very simple whenever you’re doing it

    • @ludditeneaderthal
      @ludditeneaderthal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Imagine a 5 speed. Ok, the top 4 have 2 ranges, you select range with the paddle in front. In top range, each of those 4 gears has a direct drive and overdrive, which the red switch selects, back direct, forward OD. So, paddle down has low through 4 (low is fully left back, which he didn't use, full left forward is reverse). In 4, you flick the paddle up (range will only change in neutral gate, so you always preselect the paddle) then shift back to top left of the 4 speed H (5th direct). Flick the red switch forward, foot off the throttle, it shifts to 5th OD. Preselect red switch back for direct, shift to 6th, 6th direct, flick red switch forward, foot off throttle, it shifts to 6th OD. Same for each of 7th and 8th. So you have, including low, 9 direct gears, and 4 OD gears. A 9 speed is the same pattern, just no OD selector switch. A 10 is just like the 9, but low is in the high range pattern too. An 18 speed is the 9, but the OD switch (splitter) works in EVERY gear from low to 8. A 15 speed is a 10 speed, but the splitter is for UNDERdrive, and only works in low range, and you run all the underdrive in sequence, 1 UD to 5UD, preselect the splitter, then 4th direct, 5th direct, preselect paddle up, then 6th through 10th, all direct. Underdrive is 3 gears lower than low range, so 5th UD is the same as 3rd direct. 15s are mostly seen in heavy dump trucks and mining kind of stuff, so need that low range grunt, lol. In all of them, you don't usually use every gear every time.
