As someone who lives in a desert, it's actually really common to see that "inverted" style of landscaping! Large areas of green grass, with planters full of sand/dirt and desert plants. In my area at least, we have a huge campaign on conserving water, so areas of desert plants and rocks to break up the grass is one way to make your yard look "lush" while actually cutting back on the water needed for grass.

One house that "really" need a refresher is Agave Abode in Oasis Springs. It is not something that looks awful on the world map - basically it's not screaming "I need a make-over" as much as the other homes in that neighborhood. but once you load it in? Sad, drab, empty, and with a random floor tile accidentally placed outside the house. So it's no "so ugly you will feel happy renovating it" as some homes are that on purpose. But more of just dark and outdated - which is perfect for a refresher :)
I really like the idea of you doing some longer form content. I have ADHD and even with medication, some days it's hard to focus on chores. I would love to watch you "refreshing" all of the homes that EA didn't refresh! LOVE this video. It gives me American 70 sitcom vibes like Bewitched and The Brady Bunch.
The only mistake I noticed in the end was that you forgot to change the colour of the cabinet above the fridge! All the other ones were changed to brown. Personally I don't like the yellow couches and found the beige to be kinder and much more comfortable on the eyes, but the house itself is gorgeous! Great job! :D
Yeah I saw the cabinet above the fridge too. Every time I post to the gallery is when I realize my mistakes so it’s whatever. Building with strictly base game is difficult, but he did well with the lot overall. This video really made me consider how nice the lot refreshes the sims team recently did were.
The brown, green and cream living room was a vibe! Also I think the twin room should have been front of the house and the single by the patio, it has more options.
Definitely some neighborhoods here in Phoenix, Arizona have the inverted grass situation you're talking about at the beginning. The HOA will pay to water grass in public areas, but most individual houses will choose to have rocks in their yard. Much cheaper and lower maintenance (and better for the water supply).
This build has so much character, so funky! I really like it. You spent quite a lot of time and it shows. The length of the video is fantastic as well! I would love for you to do more of these refreshes!
The funny thing is, that I also just renovated this exact house because it looked so sad next to the new one 😂 It's interesting to see what direction you went with it! (Maybe I get some ideas what to add.)
I love seeing refreshed of EA builds. It’s what helped me learn to love building in sims 4, I started refreshing the starters in willow creek and updating them using other packs I own.
I think it's called a taboret (?) but it's something in basegame that I use ALL the time whenever I build an art space. It's got paint on it and I think also paintbrushes, so it's super nice to have to make the space look a little more used :) Me just shouting at my screen that you could have used that :') I love the crafty space tho, very nice :D
I love these build videos! I love how long they are, and how you show every step of the process, without having to watch all the extra fluff that comes along with a stream vod. Hope to see more refreshes like this :))
Really hope they continue to add more modern/contemporary build/buy items to the base game. It is so lacking in that style; especially art. (I desperately want more swatches to that long modern red painting). Thankfully a lot of creators add cool custom artwork to the gallery. Unpopular opinion but Oasis Springs is my favorite work to build and play in. I have all of the packs and I still usually choose that world 😅 The houses in that world are also my favorite to reno. Great job on this one 👌🏼 Edit: I will LOSE MY HEAD if they re-release Sims 2. I missed out when they were giving it away free and I miss playing that iteration so much 😭
Oasis springs was an early favorite for me. Now that I have a ton of the worlds, I still really like it. It’s so big and has a ton to do and I genuinely think it’s gorgeous.
I love Oasis Springs too, just because it rains so little, and is so sunny. I live in the land of rain, so I get enough of that irl! Also, I love the warm color of the earth and stone there.
I own a MCM house. not like...a fancy one, but my house was built in 1960 and we absolutely have a giant stone fireplace in our living room and orangey wood flooring 😂.
I love your in depth build videos, it is so helpful to watch your creative building process! I actually paused and replayed a few points in the video to make sure how I fully understood how you were able to make certain features and ideas work in the build. It is so great to learn tip, tricks, and new ideas especially for build mode, as I am often intimated by some of the features such as friezes/exterior trims, platforms, and half walls. This video was also extra fun because of the base game only constraint. Perhaps once they drop the new base game update you can refresh another house and have more options!
Looooovee the refresh so much 😍😍 fav parts as I was watching 10:04 there is a dirt flooring instead of sand one 16:00 way to dark to see anything that's happening do to YT's compression 19:44 basic platform things 😍 20:55 testing in live mode 22:29 let there be light yay
Dear god, does the inside of this place look like it was furnished in the 1970s. 😂 I mean that in the best possible way (or the best way that I can). Really, it's the colors and patterns and textures, but still. All it needs is one of the brown/gold patterned western/cowboy looking couches, and it would practically be a time capsule. Well done, James Turner lol
Amazing what you can do which basegame, it’s a big challenge for me. Trying my best, I’ve built some basegame homes, but I prefer all packs. I hate restrictions. I’ve gotten used to, being amazed that I couldn’t be without any of them at this point, when I’m building.
Not me screaming at my computer telling James he missed an entire front section of wallpaper in the driveway and he doesn't realize until 3 minutes later LOL This looks like a house I would build for some grandparents.
The fridge in the stone column actually reminds me so much of my grandparents' house--it was built in the late 80s rather than the 70s, but there's a very similar column in their house with the entry to the kitchen to the side, and the pantry is built into it! One of those things I feel like you would NEVER see in a 21st century house, but definitely true to a little bit older houses!
Wow this house actually really reminds me of a neighbour's house when I was growing up, you nailed the vibe. Also love the green and yellow - Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

But, also for people on PC there are mods to unlock event items, you need a mod for each event.
I love the longer slow-build video style! It's really helpful, especially with more complicated builds with lots of platforms to see how your thought process comes together.
Same, i actually really don’t like speed build videos
I would love to see a suburban house base game refresh when the 70+ update comes out in February with the new kitchen and everything :)
growing up, all of the bedrooms had little jesus crosses above them. my mom insisted on them. the lights above the doors really triggered that memory for me and i just imagined a bunch of baby jesuses everywhere in this build 😂
Not me looking at the ups and down on the floor and thinking: DAM the 60's were NOT times thinking of disabilities.
Not a great feature in a house you want to grow old in!
I honestly would love to see you refresh the other houses in Oasis Springs and Willow Creek, this was so fun to watch!
No, I *loved* getting to see your thought process! It helps me learn so much more than just the sped-up final version. Your problem solving with the roof especially, that's SO helpful!
James: This is a refresh, not a renovation.
Also James: Demolishes nearly everything.
I love this guy. 😂😂❤❤
I enjoy the long form build videos and am a long time "viewer who does not comment."
I enjoy any video you do. I agree with doing a series of refreshes and please upload all of them to the Sims Gallery! 🙏
I would love to watch you "refreshing" all of the homes that EA didn't refresh! LOVE this video. It gives me American 70 sitcom vibes like Bewitched and The Brady Bunch.
Now we need a refresh build but no base game items allowed
James: the fridge would be annoying because it’s right in the doorway.
Me: *looks up to see my annoying fridge right in the doorway*
I think I might have gone with entirely different couches myself. Those ones look so blocky to me. Need to baby-proof them 😂
The brown, green and cream living room was a vibe! Also I think the twin room should have been front of the house and the single by the patio, it has more options.
Man I haven't played this game in years I can't believe how many new features they've added to build mode.
James! Can you add some lights when doing the floor plan? It’s hard to see! Love the build
The yellow couches and curtains were killinggg me, lmao. Loved the use of teal/green/brown tho
This build has so much character, so funky! I really like it. You spent quite a lot of time and it shows. The length of the video is fantastic as well! I would love for you to do more of these refreshes!
The funny thing is, that I also just renovated this exact house because it looked so sad next to the new one 😂
It's interesting to see what direction you went with it! (Maybe I get some ideas what to add.)
44:30
James: *Talking about the ceiling*
Also James: *sounds very offended* "Hey my table! >:("
I love that we refreshed it to 1970 instead of 2025 😂 It's a vibe!!
That living room deserves a nice conversation put!!!!!!!!!!!😂❤❤❤❤
I love seeing refreshed of EA builds. It’s what helped me learn to love building in sims 4, I started refreshing the starters in willow creek and updating them using other packs I own.
I think it's called a taboret (?) but it's something in basegame that I use ALL the time whenever I build an art space. It's got paint on it and I think also paintbrushes, so it's super nice to have to make the space look a little more used :)
Me just shouting at my screen that you could have used that :') I love the crafty space tho, very nice :D
I love these build videos! I love how long they are, and how you show every step of the process, without having to watch all the extra fluff that comes along with a stream vod. Hope to see more refreshes like this :))
Include event stuff! They’re gallery accessible to people who didn’t do the events, so it’s not going to leave gaps.
You should move some of the extended Bigwallet family, that don't have their own home, into this!
Great job on this one 👌🏼
Edit: I will LOSE MY HEAD if they re-release Sims 2.
Love the longer videos. Please place a few lights before you start the layout. I can’t see what you’re doing very well!
I wish the fridge was in the other stone corner near the other door and that original cubby space was like a dry storage/pantry space
Great build! love going back to give a refresh for these old base game houses. It's nice to see your process too
I really like your build. It feels like my childhood ❤ I appreciate your positive energy.
James... I really should be studying for my exams, but how could I possibly resist an hour and a half long video from you?
Looooovee the refresh so much 😍😍
fav parts as I was watching
10:04 there is a dirt flooring instead of sand one
16:00 way to dark to see anything that's happening do to YT's compression
19:44 basic platform things 😍
20:55 testing in live mode
22:29 let there be light yay
I've redone this house a couple of times. Always fun!
I like long videos when I know they're long. I won't be able to watch this all in one go but I'll come back later
I love how this is a whole walkthrough process and you share your thoughts as you build.
40 minutes in and waiting for James to acknowledge that a fireplace in the desert is probably a bit weird 😅
🤣🤣
I think you missed a bit of platform trim in the kitchen. 😂
I seriously LOVE this house. Love the midcentury vibe and feel of like a 70's house. Fantastic job! Love your builds.
You should make this a series James. I'd love to see more.
Not me screaming at my computer telling James he missed an entire front section of wallpaper in the driveway and he doesn't realize until 3 minutes later LOL
This looks like a house I would build for some grandparents.
The 'teenager' room not having matching furniture feels so accurate for some reason...
I enjoy videos that show more of the noodling personally. This is a really awesome house refresh.
The cabinet above the fridge is still white.
