The pianist is a composer of this song Ihor Krutoi. ))) He composed this song for Lara Fabian. When he saw Dimash singing Sinful Passion in Sochi he was so amazed that invited Dimash in Moscow and gave him this song.

Dimash was...as always...incredible! Like you...I was distracted by the swans constantly moving in the background! They weren’t necessary! Perhaps a “still” photo of one or two swans...although, for myself I don’t think anything else was needed to inhance the performance! Dimash is such a “total package”...absolutely nothing but himself and his magnificent talents are needed!❤️🇰🇿🎶🥰🎼😍😎

A couple of additional notes about his hands and movements -- if you notice (in most of his performances), his top line of knuckle placements almost always aligns with the top of the microphone. Since he is also a master of his volume and attack control, that not only allows him to smoothly adjust the distance and range for the mic, it also allows him to angle it as needed (especially as the performance builds).
One thing the grip also does is it allows him to brace himself [sort of like we would normally do if told to prepare and brace ourself power wise to either hold our spot or to get ready for a strong push forward].
A couple of interesting things about the hand switching [in addition to the release of the strain on the hands as you pointed out] is that he has almost ambidextrous fluidity, regardless of which hand he uses (whereas most singers tend to handle the mic mainly with their predominant hand). That also allows for a number of other less obvious benefits...
For one thing, when a singer keeps a mic almost entirely in their favored hand, it also means that hand partially blocks a lot of the performance from full view of the audience on that side of the audience. If you watch Dimash, across many of his performances, he sings and performs back and forth to the full audience seating -- whereas a lot of singers tend to physically turn their body to sing just to one side or the other. Since he switches hands and can twist or lean so easily (again, helped a lot by his stance as you pointed out), it helps him to keep the full audience width entranced and locked in to his performance.
The other benefit of his ambidextrous mic control is that it allows his whole body to not only swing (building power as needed, including stretching to release any additional air that might be constricted), it also lets him cover a wider movement area across a stage without having to physically turn or move. i.e. rather than just a singer standing in one locked narrowed performance stance, it makes his performance and presence look even bigger. Additionally, by being able to move in place, he has less strain or tightness building on just one side of his body.
Another interesting point about his hand usage is that he regularly 'conducts' his own voice. This helps him visualize not only the notes or progressions he's feeling and wants to convey -- for the audience members, it also gives them a wonderful visual, following his hands as if they're guiding and controlling the sounds -- creating a subliminal or dreamy virtual illusion of both seeing and hearing the notes.
As he is also a master composer, you can see it really is as if he is a Conductor guiding his vocal musical instrument. His hand and body movements can also help draw in or surround the audience as the movements swirl to wrap them in even closer. It becomes almost hypnotic and entrancing (which is probably why it's so common for viewers to almost forget to breath themselves as they watch so mesmerized).
You can almost think of Dimash using his hands an movements the same way a snake charmer can guide a serpent's gaze and following.
Even his slow soft hand movements closer to his head brings the audience closer in conveying a loss or sadness. He feels and 'acts' the emotions -- without trying to "Act Out" the emotions. He creates his own world as he sings, and brings us in there with him.

@ Bill Tarling: thank you for such detailed description of your observation! Yes, I did notice how Dimash sort of hangs high notes on an invisible rope while singing S.O.S. in China, in competition "Singer". I have seen such an illusion of music in 3D in live performance of a great Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov. His hand were obviously busy, while he excavated that Stravinsky's music out of his great piano. But the illusion was there, yes.

The pianist wrote the song Tired Swans and was honoured and played at this performance. He may not have wanted to detract from Dimash. He also wrote Sinfull Passion. He did not play in that performance, however he gave Dimash a standing ovation. He was the gentleman dressed in white, in front row,. After he heard Dimash’s voice, he asked if Dimash would perform his songs. I understand this gentleman is held in very high regard.

I just have a couple of things to add to this comment. First, Igor is the writer and composer of this song. The admiration was for each one for the other. They teamed up and I honestly believe they make a perfect pair. I have heard there will be more from this duo. And I have already heard a couple of new ones from the Moscow performance. Dimash will also be performing with Igor at the Barkley Center in Brooklyn NY in October. And as in the other comment. Russians are not known for showing a lot of emotion but I have seen other videos where he and Dimash are performing together and what I do see on Igor's face is pride for Dimash.

    • @DrMarcReynolds
      @DrMarcReynolds  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

After watching the video back as I was editing I noticed a lot of subtle emotional responses in Krutoy's face. I think you observation about being more reserved with showing emotions in this setting makes a lot of sense. My initial reaction was more about the visual contrast of seeing their physical expression back to back being visually jarring. But with your insight in place Krutoy's reactions are actually very touching to see in some moments here. It's just much more subtle. I definitely do no mean any disrespect. Even if he wasn't famous - anyone on stage deserves respect for giving an audience the gift of their music and of themselves.

Well said. Honestly, if the performance was absolutely perfect in every way possible I don't think it would feel human - I don't think it would be as captivating to watch. For perfectionists like Dimash seems to be it is really hard to let get rid of tension in all its forms. But like I said in the video - there are much worse places to carry tension than the hands- it is admittedly nit picky.

I think, other than his amazing range, the fact that he can change over and octave instantly with no apparent effort... his lovely hand gestures. He is so graceful and elegant. He's 6'3" and painfully slender, and could easily come across as gawky but manages a maturity and grace beyond his years. He is, to me, such a gift to the world of music. I agree about those tired swans. Such a distraction. I know the pianist is the composer, and probably is tired of his own swan song, but he should have shown more engagement or asked them to leave him off camera and let the song and performer carry the audience. Dimash is all that is needed. When he performs he owns the stage, and rightly so. Best instructive reaction ever. Glad I found you.

What makes me lose my grasp on what is happening around me, is how angelic his voice is, how much emotion he puts into the song he sings, and how much you can tell he cares about his fans. Oh yeah, and how much he thanks the band he played with. I can't think of anything that hurts the performance, but what helps it so much, is how the band look at him with Gobsmacked eyes as to what he is doing.

But...Igor Krutoi !!!! He is a legendary Russian master composer. I believe that Russia has opened its doors to Dimash because of Krutoi's patronage - Russia is a closely guarded and extremely competitive market, near impossible to penetrate. That is the reason why most artists looking to break into the Asian market flock towards friendlier (more accepting of external influences) China instead. Krutoi deserves every second of footage...Thanks for the reaction. Very interesting.

ah... they focus on the pianist, Igor Krutoi, because he created this song in 2014 for Lara Fabian, and because he's the composer of that song, he was the one who asked Dimash to sing his song, in fact that song is Igor Krutoi feat. Dimash, and that's why they focus so much on him... hehe 🙂✌

As mentioned by others the pianist was Igor Krutoy. He was escorting Dimash to a few places in Russia to get him known. Mr. Krutoy is an incredible composer--I can't think what title he has, but he is revered in Russia as a proven artist. But Mr. Krutoy would probably agree--he would not have wanted the attention on himself but on Dimash. After Dimash was finished singing, he tried to give honor to Mr. Krutoy, but Mr. Krutoy didn't want it. So that was a camera person's choice, I guess, because of WHO was at the piano. I had noticed the tension in his hand on several occasions, sometimes tense enough that I thought it must be aching a bit. I really enjoyed your analysis. Thank you.

🤣🤣🤣 Your face says you were bursting to say something during that performance! I really like your new format though, you talk about his whole performance and not just his voice. ♡♡♡
This song and this performance is truly one of my favorites by Dimash. To me, Dimash is not just about hitting those high notes, he's rounded and so versatile. His voice draws me in and his body language keeps me with him. Together, it puts me in a trance and I can never look away. He's so inviting and hypnotic, and on top of that, he's very handsome. The expressions on his face convey so much emotions that sometimes I literally forget to breath...

What's always drawing me in is the movement of his hands. It's like they have a life of their own, they tell a whole story, they paint, they point all the highlights in the song. I've seen Dimash in backstage videos or interviews...his hands are always moving, he's tapping, he gesticulates a lot. He uses his hands to express himself while speaking and singing. So for me his hands are the "drawing in" part. They could be the "distract" part if they wouldn't be so on point with the music. As for Igor Krutoy, first time I saw him, I thought the same...that he looks so unimpressed by Dimash...but then I learned that he is like a volcano....hard, cool, still from outside but hot and burning inside....and he is very, very impressed by Dimash's voice and vocal abilities...only that you won't see this on his face.

Dimash is absolutely amazing. He's only 25 and is being labeled as the "greatest singer in the world". He obviously loves performing but I can't even begin to imagine the kind of stress that label must inflict. Between the need and/or desire to continuously outdo his previous performances and the negative aspects of celebrity(fans, paparazzi, lack of privacy, etc) it's not the least bit surprising that he is carrying around some stress. He's also extremely critical of his performances which doesn't help.

Great reaction! I feel like I learned some things. Things that draw me into his performance: the dynamics of his voice seem to change so rapidly that I feel my attention constantly stimulated. Like someone is telling a story with a lot of clever plot twists; his physical expressions (especially his hands) seem to really mirror where his voice is going; how he takes his time building the song is something I rarely see other singers do, it really gives a sense of anticipation.
Things that took me out of performance: I agree a bit on the pianist who is the composer of the song, but it didn't affect the song much. I actually think he was very engaged in the performance though because his face is always like that even though he seems very impressed with Dimash.
I don't know if I buy the hand thing. I think it's difficult to tell if his hand is actually that tense. He's a skinny guy and if he closes his hand, his knuckles are going to show like that. If he really carried that much tension in his hand, I'd think it be difficult for him to smoothly pass the mic off so much.
I don't really have an opinion about the format. This was nice but if you go back to stopping during the performance, maybe just try to let him finish a full phrase before stopping so that it doesn't ruin the flow as much and hinder your comprehension of the performance as a whole. I hope you do more reactions for Dimash, your opinion is very interesting and detailed. Thank you!

And here I thought he was amazingly relaxed for singing at the Kremlin for the first time. The panning WAS taking off Dimash but he was Igor Krutoy, the composer of the song. I feel he was proud as punch of Dimash and scanning the audience for their reactions. Russians really keep in their emotions in so well that I have to look harder (the eyes) to see how they are really feeling.

The man at the piano is the composer of the song. He wrote it for Lara Fabian, a french singer. He asked Dimash to perform it at the Kremlin. Also the background video of the swans was to make a connection between song and picture. The name of the song is The Love of Tired Swans

  • @maykachaphan6909

Interesting thoughts. I always enjoy them. I will say his hands can occasionally show some tension. He is though 6’3 and 60 kilos so very thin. I have very long narrow fingers and my bone structure is easily seen under them. If I hold something I don’t want to lose it looks like I am holding it hugely tight. I think some of it is how slender his hands are. 😊
Maestro Krutov. Asked Dimash to sing his song. I can see the expressiveness in his eyes. At times he ahas almost the doting uncle warmth in his eyes. I think it goes to the nature and culture. Dimash will be singing in Maestro Krutovs NY show with artist like Andrea Bocelli and Lara Fabian. He is more widely known than Dimash in Russia in a sense. So with him playing the piano it would be very odd for them not to put him on camera.

Great reaction; a couple of things I don't agree with you on. 1. The hand tension, I mean he certainly does, to want to drop the microphone. 2. The swans in the back ground I thought were appropriate, after all the song is titled the love of tired swans. Who doesn't like a great stage setting? 3. Panning to the pianist I think was a respect thing, as this man Mr Igor Krutol was the composer of the song, a very respected Russian composer, and the lyrics were written by the poet Mikail Guceriev. Song was composed in 2014 for Lara Fabian. They also panned to the orchestra at times and I like that. I'm sure Dimash would have had his say in where the cameras where to aim. Regards Erich

Don't think his hand is in tension, he's played with the mic from the childhood. Agree it's more he is very emotive singer.
I'd also prefer other format of editing of this performance but it was some kind of state/political event no concert, guess that's the reason why it was edited this way, not only concerning the singer but also Igor Krutoy, because he's more famous person in Russia than Dimash.

To me, Dimash's facial and bodily expressions really draws me further into his performance. This song is mesmorizing, Dimash is mesmorizing, almost hypnotic. He did something really cool and threw the lyrics to the bridge out the window and turned it into a vocal instrumental. Both of Lara's original versions, Russian and the French "Je T'aime Encore" (which she wrote the lyrics to) have lyrics on the bridge. Between Lara and Dimash I genuinely can't imagine anyone else ever covering this song. The video in the background kind of annoys me, it's something Russians seem to do a lot. I would love to have you do Lara's "Llora", from Moscow 2014 (white shirt, black skirt, this a live performance). It's another really beautiful song by Igor Krutoy. That's why they cut to him a lot. I wish they did it less but it doesn't pull me out, maybe just because I'm aware of his part in this. Keep up the great work!
