Wow...that's an eased up 43.6 on an equilateral track (no wide curves) in a relatively open-air stadium. Probably a top 3 or 4 performance ever. Great video find.
Johnson was on another level by that point in his career. Butch Reynolds doing his customary late surge but either horribly misjudged his first 200 or just didn’t have the basic speed to compete with MJ…or both.
I am certain that MJ couldve gone sub 43 if he didnt try to run a negative split. (try, not DO). He always looked to be cruising too much for the first 200, and he always seemed to finish with some left in the tank. WvN was three quarters of a second ahead of MJ at 200 to go and still nearlyt the same ahead with only 100 to go. MJ flew home and couldve kept going. thats often the way with that approach- its very very difficult to get right whereas WvN had spent everything with 50m to go and held on.
Just once I'd have like to have seen him go out in 20.9ish.. he certainly had the speed reserve to do so and still come home with enough left to run sub43

Run through the finish line! Dam these athletes could have challenged his own world record at the time!
