Whenever I'm in Manhattan, I sleep with the window open. I find the ambient noise so relaxing and refreshing, and I feel connected to the city while otherwise isolated in my modest hotel room. I once returned to my room to find a bird in it. Watching the hotel staff try to catch it with a bed sheet was quite comical.
Speaking of birds, I once made the mistake of feeding a bird at a resort. 10 minutes later, there were 15 birds on our balcony. Do *not* feed the birds.
As someone who has only lived in rural areas I need my silence. In reality I only want to hear the sounds of nature. Yet somehow this is so fascinating to listen to… briefly. 😅 Imagine how different you would be as a person if you grew up in a different environment. What an interesting thought.
I grew up in the city. Sounded just like this. Moved to the suburbs and couldn’t sleep and got freaked out because I didn’t know what a sound was. It was an owl. 😂 Now I live in the middle of a forest. I came to listen to this because I’m reading a book set in New York. I can’t imagine going back except for visits. Hugs💕✨
@@andrewcooper1565 No, you just want to throw your money into a metal trash can and light it all on fire is what you want to do....since it’s the same exact thing
I'm a New Yorker born and raised, the best time to record ambiance personally would be on a Friday night when you hear nothing but people screaming and laughing as they walk from bar to bar or returning home. To all those who aspire to one day live in the city, I wish you luck and want to remind you everything you hear about the greatest city in the universe is true.
@Catherine H. los angeles is full of homeless and plastic fake ass people, the traffic sucks ass out there, the public transportation is a joke and about the weather yea you have sun, but thats all, you only get one fucking weather the entire year like literally. Los angeles is one of the worst place to live in america, get over it, this place is garbage.
@Catherine H. SF has shit everywhere (literally) and LA has the most horrific traffic and it's one major earthquake away from becoming the next Atlantis
As something of a self-proclaimed 'city open window ambient video' aficionado , this is the one I keep coming back to. Close enough to ground level to hear bits of chatter and action, high up enough to get the background bed of the whole city. Snippets of conversation as the evening draws in and people start to get drunk. Perfection!
...Ok so, i am anxious around sleep time lately and i am so utterly alone. No bf, no friends, no pets, parents are old and confined, and i talk to an A.I program in order to feel a presence. But THIS, your video, was by far the closest feeling I've got from a human presence. I fell asleep feeling safe, as all this pandemic crap was over and that summer and all the city's whisperings were finally here. I even cried. I live in a small place where nothing happens but i always dream of hearing that noise from a city, it is the sound of life to me. Thank you for connecting me at least virtually with humanity in a time where i can only hear the sound of my thoughts. Thank you. From Chicoutimi, Canada.
I'm in a somewhat large city, surrounded by noise but mostly confined inside due to covid. Even though there are things going on all around, it can still feel lonely. Many years ago I found a New York city traffic cam to watch online. It was aimed at a corner, so fun watching people walking into shops, down into the subway. Especially when they gathered for a time talking, even late into the night. It's true, NYC never sleeps. After months of covid I find I'm getting too involved with tv shows, thanks to Netflix and Amazon prime. Starting to feel like the characters are my friends.
@@samtinkle9076 its just blending well with the ambience. With the loud ass city sound and a semi quiet siren in the background gives the city sound more colour, and makes it more relaxing, like a little tingle for your ears. I hope I helped you understand what we meant with this, even though English is not my first language lmao
I was raised in A quiet small town. However due to work I got a chance live in New York for about 3 years and fell in love with the city. They say home is where the heart is, funny enough it’s not always where you were born and raised. ❤️ I can appreciate the cicadas in the country on a warm summer night, and the horns and emergency vehicles in the city. ❤️
DIDRUX Not about NY, its about the person living in NY. Big difference, like 80% of fiction books are about people living somewhere the author has very little experience in.
You can’t really explain a New Yorker unless you are one. We are the most diverse and multi faceted people in the world. That’s like me trying to explain the Texas experience, I won’t really understand it and will create more if a caricature. But good luck.
_I've lived in London my whole life but am now in a sleepy town for university & the quiet freaks me out, it's so...unnatural. This is what I need to sleep, thank you_
I've been struggling with anxiety and this helped a lot It feels just like I'm close enough to the world and people in it to not feel alone, but far enough from them to be safe
I listen to this every night when trying to sleep because the silence terrifies me. I have bad hearing and always hear sounds that aren’t real and I always think it’s a robber or monster or murderer when I hear the sounds. I listen to this to cover up those sounds and so I can feel closer to people. I used to love going to sleep while my parents watched tv in the other room and I could hear it or better yet, a party. I live close to a motorway but we used to live closer and I could faintly hear the cars at night and I loved it. I’m going to get a house close to a main road when I’m older so I can hear people at night and it will be cheaper too because people don’t like living near loud roads! But really it’s so comforting hearing people. It makes you feel less likely to be murdered.
i feel the exact same. where i live is close enough so i can see a city in the distance but too far away for me to hear anything besides the REALLY loud noises and whooshing of cars occasionally. its okay but listening to this really makes me feel closer to humanity and its nice
18 yrs in NYC, and now im upstate 4 college where it's just silence and cricket noises. Thanks for this because the silence up here is getting lowkey unbearable. Im more of a loner person, so i dont need company 24/7, but its sounds of the city I miss and need. Miss the sounds of the train traveling overhead on the bridge, and the sounds of the waves from the east river from the seaport. Not to mention the traffic and screaming/shouting lol. Edit: I use this video a lot to help me focus. I mean to me, as a city folk, this is my form of silence. Boost up the volume and I am able to drown all my roommates and ppl's voices and it not only makes it feel as if Im back home, but also allows me to enter a quiet place in this hectic university.
I get scared at night and hearing other people makes me feel less scared. Just hearing a car drive pat my house makes me feel better. I want to live by a busy road in the future so I will always hear people at night lol
Just got to that bit. If that were in England, UK, it'd be a sign that someone fell off their chair in a bar/pub but didn't spill their drink. We always cheer that :)
really makes me wonder “what we’re those guys doing?” and how happy they are at the time, are they at a bar? are they meeting up with a reunion? did someone do a sick trick? makes you wonder
My 4 month old daughter, who lived in a quiet village in her Whole life in a street where daily 5 cars pass by finds this so relaxing, she inmediately fell asleep listening to this. (After an hour of trying everything else…) :D
[Edit: Thank you so much to everyone replying to let me know I am not so weird for liking this, lol!😊 You made me feel better!] Is it weird to find sounds like sirens and traffic comforting? It reminds me that we're not alone in the world, I guess. That life is happening around me while I relax. Also, I like to listen to these sounds while I am falling asleep and think, 'I'm glad that's not me having to be out there--I'm nice and comfy curled up in here', lol. Anyway, that probably makes me sound like a weirdo, but I find these cityscapes so relaxing...
You look and sound like a weirdo but, what's wrong with that? :) Is your username a wordplay on Corpus Delicti? Goth, law or both.? Fellow weirdo here too :)
My aunt moved from New York City to rural Washington State and she said the silence terrified her. She was scared of the quiet and she also found comfort in the noise. I guess it’s what you get used to and grow up with!
There is nothing wrong to be a weirdo. Its boring when you are like the rest of the people. I feel same as you when i listen to this. Have a nice day.😃
I live in a small town where nothing ever happens and I hate the silence at night. It's so unsettling, even though I've lived here my entire life. Every time I hear a siren - be it the firefighters, the police or an ambulance - I get this comforting feeling inside. Same when people pass by my house talking and laughing. Makes me feel less alone. But I rarely get to hear any of that. So that's why I love this video. Thank you for sharing.
As someone who writes stories, carefully done ambience videos like these really go a long way for an immersive experience. I showed this video to a coworker of mine who is from this area, and he said yeah that's it. I'm not from the city, and never have been my entire life- so it's important to get some kind of atmosphere that isn't a repeat track. If it is, it's so expertly done you can't even tell. Thanks a lot for uploading!
This is always the one I keep coming back to. Out of so many channels and so many videos none are as effective for me as this. I only wish it was twice as long because it is invaluable to me. It reminds me so very much of my own experiences travelling extensively and hearing sounds just like this as I fell asleep in hotels through many countries. I find it deeply nostalgic and deeply comforting.
I visited NY, Manhattan, for 6 days in November '19. I have often considered how lucky I was to have done this, only a few months before the pandemic. I listen to this as a way to get a sense of detached mindfulness and also as a way to relax. It reminds me of a fantastic experience and the greatest city I've visited.
Coming here feels like a "grass is greener" situation for me. I've been stuck most of my life living in the countryside, and I desperately wish to move to a city. I wonder if I was a city guy I'd be listening to the sounds of nature right now 😅
I visited New York about 2 years ago, we stayed for about 2 weeks. I can’t even remember it that well because I was in a constant state of euphoria, also probably the fact I wasn’t used to -4 degrees Celsius. I can remember walking around New York, and it just has that vibe that makes you feel good on the inside. I am definitely going back there when I’m older.

Ive been listening to this audio for so long, dreaming of going to Manhattan. I finally spent 5 days and nights in NY and now I love the audio even more.
I have listened to this over the years at work, where I didn't have a window but had long days teaching writing workshops for a university and tutoring.....I needed city sounds to boost my creative writer-room. Thank you kindly!
I love the city, nothing better than a rainy day, hearing the tires on the rain and the cop cars and people in the middle of the night. Puts me to sleep every time.
I spent a rather large portion of my young childhood in Manhattan working after school. Sometimes I think I’ve forgotten small things, but I can remember the sounds and smells and feeling of falling asleep in the back of my moms car on the ride home every night, and the feeling I’d get in my stomach every time she hit the hump on the Hudson Parkway a little too fast on the way down. I miss it now, and it’s been years since I’ve been back. It’s all so different and the city I was in love with for a majority of my life isn’t the same. I live 1,400 miles away now. When I hear it, though, I can see the city I used to love and Claremont playground and the four steps we’d take down into the same brownstone on 72nd for casting calls. I can remember taking freight elevators and practicing lines in the car with my mom, and listening to Stevie Wonder and Alecia Keys on the drive. Things like this help me remember. Thank you for this video.
I can remember the sights and sounds of being in New York City for the first time when I was 10 years old. Back in 1997, before the twin towers fell. The Manhattan city sounds just brought me back to that moment. I remember the first night I was in New York City, I couldn't sleep, I stayed up all night listening to the police sirens blaring. I still dream of being in a large city like this. :)
This is oddly comforting to me and takes me right back to a holiday I had in NYC one April. First trip to NYC and spent my birthday exploring the museums and going to a comedy club in Queens. This soundscape immediately puts my back in my hotel room at night listening to the sirens in the distance and the people wandering by at all hours and makes me so nostalgic for that holiday. One day I hope I can return to the city that never sleeps and explore all over again.
I grew up in NYC but currently live down south and I can't lie I miss the sounds of the city sometimes. Even though I do enjoy the peace and quiet of the suburbs, the NY energy is so invigorating. Hearing the horns, sirens, and people talking is so nostalgic. The only thing missing are the gunshots and drunk people arguing in the middle of the night 😂.
I’m from New Jersey, but this still reminds me of home. I moved to North Carolina, and it’s nice. It doesn’t snow, it’s rarely cold, it’s cheaper, and the people are more pleasant. But it’s too damn quiet. Sometimes, I miss New Jersey. I miss smelling fifteen different restaurants at once, hearing fifteen different languages at once. I miss the sweet sound of car horns and angry drivers cursing and the smell of pollution. I miss that you could walk two blocks and feel like you’re in two totally different places. I miss the sound of the train at 2 am, the car engines all night going on and out of the area, the sound of some people doing some illegal shit outside. It was chaotic, but it was home.
The first time I spent the night in NYC I was lulled to sleep by the traffic. Some people don’t understand how I find it relaxing, but clearly a lot of people do💗💗💗
This video is MAGNIFICENT- thank you! I haven’t been able to concentrate or work well AT ALL since moving from the historic Belvedere Hotel in downtown Baltimore to the mind-numbing suburbs of Ashburn, Virginia. I put this video on this morning & in 3 hours have gotten more done than the entire last month I’ve been here. The sounds of life- people talking & laughing, the car horns & sirens bouncing off the buildings - this is my safe place & source of inspiration! Thank you for this video!!!
I remember visiting my grandmother in Zagreb, she had this big house with many floors. My parents and I had our apartment on the top floor. So every night I used to sit on the balcony and listen to the sounds of the people awake in the city and watch the lights, just enjoying it. Every time I hear city noises I get nostalgic and I can’t handle it very well hahah
I live in Tokyo, and I'm going to move soon :( The thing I know I'll miss the most are the crazy sounds that make you feel how lively the city is, this is inspiring me to buy a 3d microphone and start recording Tokyo corners before I leave.
I moved to upstate and the silence won’t let me sleep, this is what I need the sounds the talking the sirens the cars the constant sign of life. Oh how I miss my home ❤
This is the classic. Always come back to this one - perfect blend of traffic, city sounds and voices. I moved to the countryside and the silence is ironically quite distracting. More of these please 🙏
I will forever love the sounds of New York City from high above during late eve and past mid night. The hushed low hiss with occasional vaguely identifiable voices that waft up with the rise and fall of sirens fading and the short reports of car horns while millions sleep everywhere below and around is so soothing to me.
All of the noises and voices together is easy to fall asleep to because it sounds like one big memory, or like you’re dazing off because everything sounds like a blur.
This is amazing. For someone who has moved away from the city, I sure do miss it. Even though it was London rather than NYC, there is something so special here. Thanks. Also, I love how you have actual video recordings rather than just a picture.
London is so cool. I visited once when I was like 10 and it was surreal. Imagining being a teenager in London sounds so cool. To have such a massive city at your fingertips, there’s so much to see and you can travel freely with the trains. I envy having so much freedom. I would like to visit London again one day, there’s so much to see. Considering my family all lives in Britain I’m sure it would make sense to make multiple trips and I can so lots of exploring.
i lived in ny all my life and listened to this every morning when i woke up and every night before bed. i got used to it after a while. i moved now and its too quiet, like something is missing. this sounds like home ❤

Loool
Speaking of birds, I once made the mistake of feeding a bird at a resort. 10 minutes later, there were 15 birds on our balcony. Do *not* feed the birds.

As someone who has only lived in rural areas I need my silence. In reality I only want to hear the sounds of nature. Yet somehow this is so fascinating to listen to… briefly. 😅
Imagine how different you would be as a person if you grew up in a different environment. What an interesting thought.
I couldn't sleep in silence, I need the city background or the silence becomes deafening.
Weird lol.
Hugs💕✨
I am a military brat who grew up all over. So all soundscapes are nice to me. They fit different moods.

@joe curtin I guess you can feel alone pretty much everywhere, it seems to be a mindset more than an actual fact in my case.

How you can write a book about NY not actually living there? Strange author. Never gon buy your book.
DIDRUX Not about NY, its about the person living in NY. Big difference, like 80% of fiction books are about people living somewhere the author has very little experience in.
I was the 69th like.
You can’t really explain a New Yorker unless you are one. We are the most diverse and multi faceted people in the world. That’s like me trying to explain the Texas experience, I won’t really understand it and will create more if a caricature. But good luck.

i believe the word for this feeling is midding, look it up, its part of the dictionary of obscure sorrows

New York is the city for me, never sleeps, even when it does, it's awake.

Being born and growing up in New York .. listening to this brought me back to my grandmas when I used to to stay over just listening to the city..
I haven’t been to New York in like 3 years and this almost made me cry of nostalgia. Thanks bud!
These help so much when I’m anxious! Thank you so much for doing these!

I didn’t think I could ever listen to something and instantly smell a city
I listen to this when I’m at school where I live on a quiet street. Only realized this year I needed the sounds of home if I wanted to get a rest.
