      You will still get some spam for sure. Not everyone follows the law. You can also check the spelling of "unsubscribe" in the emails getting through. Sometimes people replace the I or E with a 1 or 3

    this is wonderful, ive been cleaning out my email once a week every Friday morning to keep a fresh start and overtime I begin to realize most of it is junk mail, even though I hit the "unsubscribe" button in the email it seems as if I get more junk. This video is helpful, now I can have all this junk mail in one place and open each mail individually to "unsubscribe". The goal I have is to NEVER have to delate junk mail again because there is NO junk to delate. I'll try this hack out. Thanks for the video! Also be careful who you get your phone number and email out too, to limit unless email

    All you are doing is moving emails, spam mails have an unsubscribe, but all this does is inform scammers that this address is alive and being used, your email then goes on to a list and you end up receiving even more than you had in the first place

    • @derekthornton
      @derekthornton  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Clicking on the link does inform them the address is real, but this does not do that. And, as mentioned previously, it is a solution (one, single) not a cure all. It will work for some and not work for others

    Thanks for providing this great tip. I use Outlook, and I was wondering what happens if you use your suggested rule combined with adding the e-mail addresses of third parties I want to receive e-mail from to the safe recipients list. This option can be found in the Junk dropdown (choose "Junk E-mail" option from the dropdown) at the top left of Outlook. The "good" third party e-mails will have the word "unsubscribe" in the body of the e-mail, so which rule will take precedence? In other words, will these desired e-mails stay in my in-box in spite of the fact that they contain the word "unsubscribe"? I am trying this out now, so i guess I will answer my own question!!
    Jim

    • @derekthornton
      @derekthornton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. You should be able to set the priority of the rule. That is, you can filter "good" junk first and then the bad stuff.

    • @jimvinci8295
      @jimvinci8295 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@derekthornton Thanks Derek. I will check this out. There is one more glitch to your rule that has a pretty easy fix. I just received a piece of junk e-mail that did not have the word "unsubscribe" in it. Instead, the words "Click here if you no longer want to receive e-mail promotions from.." (the word "here" is a hyperlink - obviously something you do not want to click!). I am going to modify the rule to have it move e-mails to the junk folder if they contain the words "click here" or "unsubscribe" (I don't think case matters)
      Jim😀

    • @derekthornton
      @derekthornton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip. You may end up with a few extra false positives, but likely not many.

    • @jimvinci8295
      @jimvinci8295 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@derekthornton For some reason, the "unsubscribe" rule is not working for spam messages (i.e., messages from individuals I have never communicated with). I had more false negatives than false positives. Outlook automatically hides from view the text and images for the spam e-mails I am receiving, and when I display the full message I do see words like "unsubscribe" or "if you no longer wish to receive these advertisements..." but the rules I set up do not move these into the Junk folder. I am not sure how the spammers structure their e-mails to keep them in my in-box, but it is quite frustrating. One alternate solution that appears to be working is to select the option to only retain e-mails in my safe senders list. With this option, I no longer have any false negatives and only a handful of false positives. I review my Junk folder and, if I find a false positive, I right click on the message and automatically add the e-mail to the safe senders list by selecting the "Never block sender" option.
      I think this is the best long term solution. There will always be the situation where someone new sends me an e-mail (e.g., a proposal from a contractor), but I will know to look in the Junk folder and can quickly add that sender to my safe senders list. I suspect that the average person will have less than 100 safe senders so this solution is both manageable and effective. Eventually, I will turn on the option to automatically move Junk e-mail to the trash. This way, I can search the trash for those rare e-mails I want to keep and add them to the safe senders list. Then when I exit Outlook, the Junk will automatically disappear since I already have the option to automatically empty the trash upon exiting Outlook.

    • @derekthornton
      @derekthornton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a perfect solution, but covers a lot of junk. Without seeing the emails that are getting through, my guess is 2 things... 1)the words child actually be images or 2) there is a mix of letters and numbers (ie. Unsubsr1be or un5ubsribe) throwing things off

  • @carolsplett1582

    What happens if there is no unsubsribe in text because they are hacked emails selling sex?

    • @derekthornton
      @derekthornton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately you would then have to add other words to filter for. Many service providers do block a certain amount of this spam automatically, but nothing is perfect.

  • @chipbuttytime3396
    @chipbuttytime3396 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If I did that and checked the folder every 6 days I would be checking through 500+ emails so it would be harder to locate the odd non-spam one. You have solved nothing

    Most spammers are not going to give you the option to unsubscribe, what they are doing is already illegal so they dont care if there is a law about including an unsubscribe link, that link could be a trap to download a virus and also you are confirming to them that your email address works and you are reading their spam

      Even the OGs should be able to benefit from this method.

    The emails I'm trying to get rid of does not have unsubscibe anywhere in the email.

      It's not a perfect system, but it definitely helps. If the email you have doesn't have the unsubscribe link, it should be filtered by your service provider at the source. You could contact them for further help.

    This is not a solution. Many friendly emails have an unsubscribe as well.

      Might not be THE solution, but it is A solution. It's not perfect, and for sure there are false positives here, but it greatly reduces the workload to get to my legitimate emails

      So, what this doesn’t do is mark previous emails with this label. So, I continue the quest to deal with my 5400+ unread emails, 99% of which are junk and maybe 1% of which were non offers😂

    I listen to the first 10 to 15 seconds on any youtube video .. If you cannot get to the point in less than 20 seconds then your video is garbage and a waste of time . This one is actually pretty good wtg !!

    Terrible way to block junk mail! If any import emails contain the word unsubscribe good luck finding it.

    No! Don't do this! You will wind up having rule-abiding e-mails that you WANT or NEED wind up in your SPAM box. Sure, some spammers' e-mails will wind up in there, but in addition, you'll still wind up with SPAM e-mails in your inbox from those who don't abide by the "law" that he mentions. 😠
