In the one side by side of connie she went from somewhat normal tween/teenager proportions to bobblehead, and in the side by side with steven and connie in the doorway they went from looking like teenagers to 5 year olds in terms of height and proportions
The animators of Ren & Stimpy refused to draw the same face twice, and it leant an unnerving and very unique look to the show which was perfect for its tone and themes.
@@damianszymanski5301 buzzfeed published an article saying he creep-ed on teenagers had a 15 year old gf at the time and a load of hearsay anonymous sources and a quote from a book but its buzzfeed and every other news site is citing them and nobody else so probably a nothing-burger
@@damianszymanski5301 He was very cruel to his animation team and had very high standards for the episodes and would even scrap them if they didn't meet his high expectations.
That show was a big step for animation at the time, especially television animation. The lack of model sheets was used to make the animation more fluid and Bob Clampett-esque. As terrible as John is, he can make some damn fluid animation.
I love Steven Universe, but NOTHING is above criticism. I have the same complaints about the consistency of the character models. I would like my characters to STAY the same size throughout. Heck, it's a meme about the 'amazing shrinking Peridot', who seems to get smaller and smaller each episode.
It happened the same with Connie, in the first episodes, she was very, *VERY* taller than Steven, but by some reason, she became to get smaller and smaller at the point to look like a 5 years old girl (I know this may happened because Steven was growning up, but damn, the small height of Connie was very exaggerated) And yes, I think the same with Peridot, she was very tall, but when she was stripped of her armor, she was in a decent height, but whit every episode she was getting smaller and smaller. Honestly, I think that Rebecca Sugar has a lot of mistakes in the animation, such as bad proportionality.
How do you even criticize art? Do you just say that the most popular opinion is the correct one? Do you compare it to whatever came first or some other arbitrary standard?
SPOILERS. in Change Your Mind (the most recent episode of SU), i couldn't stop watching the scene where the two stevens fuse to create normal steven, because they brought in a former animator from the Disney renaissance era (James Baxter) to animate it. It was just so fluid and amazingly done, i spent almost 20 minuets watching it over and over and just admiring it. This was the type of animation the show really needed. (Damn almost 100 likes tf)
I understand that you like that scene, but it is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to create those kinds of cuts consistently without having even longer delays in the scheduling of the show. That 20 second scene took James Baxter, I'd guess, 1-2 months to make.
@@Quinhala11 Aren't you seeing Yellow Diamond sitting down an at an angle with Steven though? Wouldn't that change how you view and perceive someone's height in comparison to something/someone else?
As a person who LOVES Steven Universe, I’ve been bothered by the inconsistencies for a while. At the moment, they seem to have skipped that, but as the show began you could clearly see the differences. I am still bothered that Peridot and Lapis keeps shrinking... Like, what the hell?
Jojo Wolf I think the thing that annoyed me most was the whole lapis hair situation, it annoyed me so much to be honest. Her hair was so large and it was the first time I began to notice they’re being inconsistent :/
Blake the Dweeb Yeah, it’s really annoying. I mean, I like that she lets the storyboard artists draw them in their style, but keep the dang consistencies
I hate it how every shot is just shot reverse-shot like inconsistency in sizes are for the most part, at least for me, something I don't immediately notice but once you notice the shot reverse shot expecelly in songs like 'it's over isn't it' where the set up for good shots is there to evoke emotion and the only emotion you get is from the voices it's painful
When I saw that insane animation from Battle of Heart and Mind I thought 'Holy shit they actually tried new angles AND ANIMATION.' Till I realized James Baxter did it. Not mad about that, James is a god.
You guys remember Chowder? It’s hilariously off model every now and then because it’s meant too. Sometimes they make Endive bigger than she needs to be to emphasize how huge she is, same goes for most of the characters when they emphasize one aspect of the character.
Same with Ira Gamagori from Kill la Kill, it's hillarious sometimes how they blow his size out of proportion to emphasize that he's a giant of a character.
But there's a difference between the two. Where with Chowder it's a choice and adds to the overall feel of a scene (not to mention compliments the style of the cartoon writing wise), with SU it's just genuine laziness and lack of care for a show.
SonicDDRFreak Okay some people claims that they are SU fan but they dont like the characters changing? Wut? Rebecca Sugar allready said that thay have no heights and can be clearly different sometimes. But you low fans don’t even care and know about Steven Universe bet you guys don’t know about the diamond day about Rebecca Sugar and you says you are a fan of SU? If you guys are going to be fan of SU like this then just DONT. Get out of the SU family and no one needs you guys in the SU family!
going off model wouldnt be that big of a problem if they just followed rules - like "this character must never be shorter than x character" or "x character should always have this shape head" etc etc still would be annoying, but at least itd have better consistency
Yes, this what they should have done imo. It's so distracting when I see Connie or Steven look like actual midgets compared to other characters who looks like giants compared to them. Then the next scene happens and now Steven and Connie look like normal humans.
As an SU fan, I agree with you. Another thing to add; they toy around with characters badly. As an example; yellow diamond. This is because rebecca and one of her other workers changed how she acted, From afar, this show looks amazing. But if you look closer.. boy oh boy.
I miss the days when "artistic choices" were actually deliberately made to convey a certain look or feeling in a specific shot, rather than just being made to make production quick and easy while not paying attention to when something should and shouldn't be consistent with the character sheets.
Perfect case and point is Ren and Stimpy; which went purposely off model, for stylistic purpose; which resulted more fluid animation, extremely dynamic expressions.
More shows with ACTUAL stylistic choices are: Dr. Katz Professional Therapist and Home Movies. Which are meant to look crude and stick to that throughout the entire show’s run
Well on average the amount of money that goes into making a 2D cartoon is around 90,000 per minute it would be safe to assume that almost 1 mil. Is put into the budget.
@@axel8lover8 that is still no excuse. Shows with less buget still end up looking better. On top of that they use one of the most frequestly used koreon studio and Rebecca doesn't bother putting in decent story boards.
@@wetfart9813 That's my theory, anyway. Steven Universe is short, Greg is short, Ruby is short, Sapphire is short, Amethyst is short, Peridot is short and a bunch of other characters are short. It's harder to find tall characters in Steven Universe.
“She does a good job” and yet there are more than one videos pointing out all the things she did wrong in her video. Like how she lied about things, blamed Rebecca for everything even when Rebecca had nothing to do with it, ext.
Mystic System while I was a illustration major and needed to develop a character. My professor helped by telling me, you need to just keep drawing the character after you have a clear idea. Just draw them over and over, in every angle imaginable. Eventually you will be consistent and can work on the turn around sketches.
I feel even when you're making your style consistency is everything if you had a good high school art teacher they will teach you that you should know this when you're being an artist consistency is life for an artist mostly if you're making a character or a show
Ren and Stimpy is the only show I can think of that uses the constant off model drawings to it’s advantage, but probably because it’s done intentionally.
too bad the creator is a creep and has a hate boner for the Call/arts art style (not of today but he hates the cal arts art style of the 90's which was Disney inspired) and had this furious hate for anime/manga
Frankly, the Simpsons give the biggest burn to the creator in one of their episodes when he called it along the likes of it being crude or something of the sorts.
Sonichu TAS has a particularly beautiful use of off model animation that really helps create a shifting, no, *flowing* appearance, as if it's the arctic ocean's rippling surface shimmering the light of the aurora borealis. Never has such unquantifiable abstractism come together so harmoniously to form a visual symphony of colors and shapes that marry themselves to the unmistakably distinct stylistic tone of the original graphic novel series.
I feel like Steven Universe teaches a lot of odd, not very good techniques for animation, including disregarding being on-model. People respect this show, and emulate it, and try to copy it, and it teaches them real bad practices.
Lmfao, I like this thing but I will never try to emulate it. I know people that does, but SU didn't bring me the joy of animation, it was the old Disney cartoons like from 40's. I really hate the ''but planned and organized animation is boring and lack of spirit'' argument that some SU fan I know still uses. Even if I despise Disney's hunger for power, I admire its workers
@@berserker3414my thoughts were that the looks were part of the message. Think about what Steven Universe's message is: If all porkchops were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs. Steven Universe is a hot dog.
I wanted to make a show where the art style is very inconsistent. But that’s mostly because the machine for making the show is broken and the main characters have to fix it. So each and every episode has a different style, from a cartoony one to the anime one
Love that! And may the end of the show are the characters fixing the machine again, but they don't like their style and fimd it boring so they break it again and go back to their life.. You should really try doing a show about it, It's original as hell
@@ragdollbunniii6181 That sounds amazing! You should totally work on that once you're older. And every animator for the show could also have an episode where it's animated in their art style, that'd be so cool!
That's a brilliant concept! I'd love to see that happen. Also, age doesn't really matter most of the time, I'm making a cartoon and I'm under 15 at the time of this comment, so perhaps give it a go? The best thing to do is just to draw up some concept art and get those wheels turning? I'd love to help if you want. I could do some voice acting, perhaps?
considering Stephen Hillenberg was able to keep SpongeBob consistently on model in "Help Wanted" without model sheets... Rebecca doesn't have an excuse, it's just a poor cover up for laziness, and honestly an insult to animators who put effort into their cartoons.
Please stop assuming shit about Rebecca if you haven't even seen the show or if you don't even know her. Also of freaking course there won't be character consistency. You REALLY think they gonna be a professional at character consistency on their FIRST cartoon? Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep consistency?? It's not magic.
@@sicksquid So just because it's "hard", she's allowed to be lazy? Uh, no. It doesn't matter if it's hard. Making a cartoon is hard. Yet she decided to make one anyways and now you expect people to just be fine watching a shitfest just because it's "hard"? Grow up. If you can't even keep character heights consistent then you shouldn't even try to make a cartoon unless you want it to look like trash. Plus, keeping the characters consistent isn't even that fucking hard if she would just use a goddamn model sheet. There's no "artistic freedom" in making your show more shitty.

It is an enjoyable show, Only when watching actually plot filled and interesting episodes, which are rare. Don't get me wrong Tumblr, I really enjoy SU but I don't obsess over it because of the poor animation and *way* too many filler episodes. *tumblr is going to kill me for this send help*

A very well put together and researched video with consistent points to back it up. The frequent off model inconsistencies of characters mixed with the usually lacklustre shots/framing really drags the show down. I was hoping it would get better because l started noticing inconsistencies within the same episode I'd be watching. I still really enjoy but a lot of people have stopped watching or decided against it because of this. Also wow a critique video on SU that doesn't insult the show or it's fans, haven't seen that since Robobuddies.
Indeed. Zi-Zi's pretty skilled with her critiques. I subscribed after watching her critique of Vivziepop's art style. Since I jumped onto the Hazbin Hotel hype train after Daria Cohen joined in as an animator. Can I be honest I think TH-cam and the internet in general has overtaken TV as the place to find interesting and artistic cartoons. There are exceptions but TV quite frankly is just dying.
Keoh 8 That really depends on how the critique is delivered, and how you perceive criticism Some people tend to mix in insults with their critiques, and others are more hyperbolic for the sake of entertainment But generally most people don’t take criticism very well because they don’t like to think they’re doing anything wrong
@Keoh 8 Simple difference is an insult isn't intended to help people its intended to degrade people. Screaming "Your art is Sh**" for example doesn't help anyone and is just there to degrade. Detailing why there are problems however is helpful and is not intended to degrade but rather help the creators and any other potential creators watching improve. So the intentions are different. Criticism can also still be delivered by someone that hates the subject of the criticism and still be criticism because it's still going through the aspects that are hindering it that can still help it improve. You may find very few of the things actually screamed to be insults on the internet by commenters are actually insults.
If I were to make a show, I would have intentional errors ie. colour changes, size changes, face swaps. However they would only last one or two frames and would happen once or twice per episode. It would mainly be a homage to all the errors in transformers G1 and how terrible/funny they are
Kittu Spelled With a U honestly I’m not using tumblr as the actual site, I mean it as in the type of people who do make assumptions based on the surface level. Tumblr is good, but tumblr is bad.
As an avid fan of SU I agree with this 100%. The show itself, the characters, plot, scenery, music etc. is amazing and some shots are beautiful. Unfortunately I feel like everything has become rather disjointed; it just feels like trying to read 7 different hand writings on an essay that should have been typed out in Times New Roman in the first place. I think the general aesthetic of SU is lovely but it's been haphazardly and flippantly stitched together, which honestly sucks because otherwise it's great. It just means that by the end of the episode the only thing hooking me is the plot, and the concept of the aesthetic, rather than the aesthetic itself. As contrast, an amazing short animated series with consistency and a lovely stylistic choice is Over the Garden Wall. As comparison, the characters are on model and stylistically the same. This means the story feels cohesive, and not like I'm in an alternate dimension every shot of every episode. I can focus on the story and the beauty of the show. Its a harsh truth; they are professional animators, and they should know better. And as someone who loves the show, it hurts.
Man, the attitudes of these "professional" artists reminds me of the plethora of kids on an art website I used to frequent who would get super defensive if you gave them the slightest criticism. Which is dumb because the website was literally built around a rating system, but NOPE anything less than 5/5 meant you were "hate rating".
Justine Martin someone being unprofessional being called unprofessional is the wrong term to use? It’s not like they tried really hard and went a direction people didn’t care for- which is how you’re making it seem. It’s a literal laziness that has lead to Steven being simultaneously 2 feet y’all and 5 feet tall and garnet being 8 feet and 6 feet and etc. I mean cmon. You’re telling me that one episode Steven is taller than the counter on his own and the next he’s having to use a stool isn’t just laziness and a lack of trying? They just draw them however because who cares. That’s unprofessional. It’s not like that’s even budget constraint or style choice.
I fucking love Steven universe and its actually one of my favorite shows, so I always take criticism with a grain of salt because most of the people are so quick to jump on the hate train that they cant appreciate the show for what it is. However, I wholeheartedly agree with you and think they need to change if they want to be taken seriously.
MuxyMadix is reword the sentence. When you say you fucking love a show and then take criticism with a grain of salt that comes off as criticism of your thing riles you up
You should take criticism with a huge hug if you were a true fan of the show, because you would like to have the maximum quality and for the director to actually use the budget and get more animators to work. If you are a "fan" (of the company) then go ahead and do what you're doing. At the end the animation will be made by one person and with a sloppy sad quality.
@@jane6547 This is not just to tell her but the ones who will read my comment, since she said that she did that on the past I've just told her why should ask for more quality in place of criticize other people who actually do it. According to Ian Jones Quartey, a former storyboard artist of Steven Universe and creator of OK KO, Steven Universe goes off-model because he thinks it's "funny" when characters go off model and to let staff art style be shown. That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. The first thing for a show creator and staff do to is stay on model, even Johnny Test and Teen Titans Go know the concept. This makes them look unprofessional, sloppy and lazy staff that they can't even get the height right. If he wants the staff art to be shown, then they can do it online, not on a cartoon show. Like for goodness sake, it's their job to be on-model of the character and they aren't doing what's it required!
I think we can all agree that “Mindful Education” (despite being poorly written) is the only good episode in terms of storyboarding. Although it was due to an experienced story-board being hired.
Well it's been a month. Still mostly civil discourse. The only person I've seen thus far who comes off as a ten year old is the guy that said "I don't like Steven Universe." Very insightful commentary indeed.
well i’ve seen a kpop fan who gives off the “i watch rick and morty and my intelligence is unmatched” guy vibe who tries to disagree with people who agree with the video.
Honestly I mean this in the nicest way possible, but 98% of the fandom are above 16 and I've scrolled through the comments for a bit and everyone who likes seven universe actually agrees with the video
the fact that anime rn is way more professionally animated than shows here is kinda hilarious bc anime typically dont have a giant budget(the whole reason they do the "cheek mouth" thing is that for some studios it's way too costly to try to animate normal mouths, not a style choice) and SU is said to have like $1,000,000 in the budget lol
yes, there are some beautifully drawn anime with decent animation, but you can't pretend that anime as a whole is doing great. just like in western cartoons style, we have accept mediocrity with plot and characters. you could put aside some anime and be like "but look! this has great characters and style!" (boku no hero, cells at work, your name), but we have to admit to ourselves that anime has become horribly oversaturated. with that said, western animation ain't doing so hot. we have a few good ones, like over the garden wall, bojack horseman, infinity train, samurai jack, and it goes on. all of those with unique and pretty decent styles, but they're not as polished. they are, however, a lot less cliche than a lot of popular anime in terms of character tropes and the scenarios. either way, we're kind of at an impasse.
@@ysabellamedrano3360 Not true, I've watch a lot of anime that, even tho, it has some poorly animations the stories are still incredibly good. High quality animations are still being made, and comparing to how Japan treats their cartoons to how mediocre western (trying to kill 2D animation with "live action" reboots") cartoons are, is laughable. There are so many well animated shows with great stories and art that to call them mediocre is a huge understatement. Hell, there are even high quality very well detailed anime movies with great art styles and beautiful animations still being made. Look at the anime on Netflix! There's barely anything cartoon related properties here in the US, mediocre or not, it is inmensibly better then what people do here in the US and is something that I'm glad Japan has not forgotten.
It's worth noting that lots of animators working on japanese anime have to deal with terrible work conditions and low pay. Thus churning out hundreds of episodes cheaply becomes slightly easier.
@powerstar 2028 Haven't you seen Devilman Crybaby, Violet Evergarden, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan? Look, I understand the animation used to be a lot more complicated back in the day, but they weren't perfect eather. When I first saw Ghost in Shell my first reaction was: "That was ok, the mouths looked terrible and the jumping made me dizzy". There are so many advances that japanese animation has now that sometimes it outshines the classics, transitions look smooth now, the mouths move better, the color grading and images looks stable, etc. Is only the annoyense of the use of cgi that makes me cringe everytime. I still have to see Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion, but they look like they suffer of similar problems like in GinS. I never ask for reboots, but I'm sure they can do a better job now then they could back in the day. There's still a ton of great modern anime out there, be glad they haven't reach levels of "Modern Art" cringe.😑 The stories are dope still.
Artistic freedom shouldn't matter in a professional animation that is viewed by millions. It is a show that should have a consistant, appealing style. Artistic freedom could be shown through new characters that are introduced or interesting background, color, or lighting choices. It's distracting to see a really cute Pearl with a wide nose and sweet face in later seasons versus an awkward Pearl with small eyes, a giant yaoi hand and long, thin nose in the first season.
I agree with everything except the storyboard part. They're not meant to be pretty, unless you're going to present them to a client who doesn't know shit about the process of making an animation and would think this is how the final product will look like, many artists consider polishing storyboards to be a waste of time. It's the quality of the shot that matters at this stage, not the quality of the drawing (see Miraculous Ladybug storyboards for example).
@Squidward I agree, storyboards are a very important part in the 2D animation process, and even if they don't(and shouldn't honestly, it's a waste of time) look pretty and clean, they should still look clear, have interesting angles and characters correctly proportioned to each other. I've seen some very rough\sketch like storyboards with the bare minimum in terms of polish, that still gave life to very cool animated moments, but the work was all done in-house(with a team of people working in the same building), not commissioned to other studios. When you commission to other studios you should be very clear with what you want and how you want it, to make the work easier for everybody. SU storyboards are bland and unclear, add to that the encouragement to not use model sheets and a lazy quality control, and you have a show that is as visually un-appealing as it can be.
While I agree that SU has some bad art faux pas (It's gotten better), I wish people would stop using the balanced breakfast example. That scene was clearly pushed was off model intentionally for comedic effect, and it's really effective.
@@KonEl-BlackZero That's a fine opinion you got there, but it's still a bad example, because it's not laziness on the artists' part, it's an intentional gag. Personally I like it. That face perfectly describes how I feel after making a bad pun.
Exactly. Another example frequently referenced is Steven's melting face when trying to avoid telling Connie about the time Amethyst cracked (can't remember the episode name). The face was so ridiculous in that scene that it couldn't have been anything but intentional.
Ok, I'm not a critic or anything of that sort, but, let's compare Rebecca Sugars animation to, say, Vivziepop, an animator here on youtube. Viv's art style is consistent with both her art, comics, and her animation. And here's Rebecca Sugar with a HUGE animation budget and dozens of professional animators, and well, just... Look at it.
Stylistic choice is "Hey, let's make Hugo the biggest character in any SF game he's in to emphasise his HUGENESS No model sheets screams of stylistic indifference
I don't think the SU animation is terrible, there are some really great scenes... when the characters are on model. I can agree that these characters go off model way too much, I can understand doing it for comedic effect but that's rarely the case for SU, most of the time they're off model just because there's no supervision over the artists. When the fans can clearly tell which episodes were drawn by which artist, it's sort of a problem. a lot of the characters (peridot, lapis, steven, connie, etc) all seem to be getting shorter, for example. I try not to let it bother me too much bc 1) I know next to nothing about animation and 2) I enjoy su for the story (even though that has it's issues as well), but even as a casual fan, the animation errors are unfortunately very noticeable.
The problem with this show is doesn't know what it want's to be! Is it a Action show or a Comedy show? Don't get me wrong it can work both, but you need to structure some ideas that can work on not, and not only that some of this storyboard's are good at telling comedy rather than action, and you can see that fight scene in SU, they are lazy, boring, flat and a lot of inconsistencies, there's not even weight to the character's! Great video as always Miss Zi-Zi! ^^
@Squidward That wouldn't explain the filler. There's many stories, cartoons, and movies that just waste your time with tons of character. LOOK AT THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! THAT MAKES US GOOD! They thought with no level of sense or forethought. On top of that, clearly a lot of the filler is due to a severe lack of focus.
Honestly. You're so right though. It's...really scary tbh, I just don't know why they can't even keep the same height for the main characters- the crystal gems. Sometimes in the original show Steven is like the height of my lamp and then all the sudden he's twice as tall. Most of the time I didn't notice this until watching videos addressing these things.
It works out well for Gumball since it's a comedy show and having every character in a different style (Paper, 3D, pixelated etc.) is an interesting and unique choice for a cartoon and considering all the weird stuff in Gumball and the fact that it's being called Amazing But for Steven Universe it just makes everything look worse. It's supposed to be a serious, deep and refreshing cartoon yet they make it look like a comedy. It's fine if it's both comedy and a deep show but changing the character looks every two scenes just makes it look a bit lazy. I'm not saying that the people who worked on it are lazy, i'm just saying it LOOKS LIKE it's lazy and that they haven't tried to keep the characters' looks as they are If they want it to be both comedy and a serious show maybe they could add some fun jokes from time to time or make the characters chibby in a certain scene where it's needed, like in some other shows (Can't give examples but i'm sure i have seen it somewhere else) but to not change the looks every five seconds and just to keep the characters as they are most of the time But that's just my opinion
@@dollartreejadenyuki6046 Thank you OwO Glad to see somebody to agree with me in the comments for one time ! I mostly get stated that my opinions are wrong
What's more funny is that the episode "Mindful Education" and the Pink Steve fusion at the end of "Battle of Heart and Mind" had an amazingly done and *consistent* animation that was just beauty for the eyes to witness! ... Funny thing is that they had to get external help for those... A storyboarder guest from Trigger Studios and James Baxter himself. Its just so sad that there has to be a guest animator for the show to look at least *descent*.
I never liked Steven Universe. Steven's voice alone is enough to make me want to set something on fire. Also, the fanbase acts like someone built Auschwitz on their Minecraft server when people make any negative comments about the show and that's funny.
I mean, every fandom is like that so... eh? You don't have to like it, but to not like a show based off of the idiotic actions of other people doesn't make sense. You can like the show and hate the fandom, it's 100% ok. Don't let other people define you're feelings for something I'm sure you haven't seen more than 5 episodes of. And if you have, then my bad ^^
To be honest, I came into this thinking I was going to click off within a minute or two because it would be another mad person ranting at how "a show like this could get so popular" but you made a very compelling argument! The reason Rebecca Sugar gave is something along the lines of what a young fanfiction writer would give for killing off a character so their OC could be with the hot protagonist. It's just sloppy and I totally agree with you.
Something that many people don’t know is that this isn’t necessarily just the storyboarders fault, it also depends a lot on which studio animates it, Steven Universe is animated by 2 different studios: Rough Drafts and Sunmin. The first on is the one that tends to go off model and even have shots that look worse than the actual storyboard, this studio is responsible for episodes like Laser Cannon or Same old World, the other studio (Sunmin) on the other hand, is the one were they do follow the model sheets and outline instructions and the one that tends to be more off model, this studio is responsible for episodes like Mr. Greg, Mindful Education or the second half of Reunited. There are many storyboarders who are criticized for their style , although there are episodes were their characters looks great but in others bad, so its not a coincidence, its the studio that animates the episode, here’s an example of how much the storyboarders style is affected depending on the studio: modestmondays.tumblr.com/post/160098938975/alonetogether-made-a-small-comparison-chart
ok one thing about storyboards, it's supposed to indicate composition, action and storytelling. whether things are on model or not is up to the lead animators. which they don't do, because ms Sugar says no and encourages/pushes different styles and inconsistencies. do not blame the artists. because a storyboard is drawn poorly doesnt mean the show will look poorly too. please for the love of god look at storyboards from other shows. it is how its done.. do not blame the artists. blame the direction.
I'd argue everyone is to blame. Everyone is a piece in the puzzle. The direction itself (as it is here) is often the main problem sure because they are the guiding hand and that is what Zi-Zi did state by the fact that the Sugar pushes all this through like this. But everyone is still a cog in the product and still does take some of the blame.
@@kodey1m The thing is, the show looks good. The perspective isn't off, the lip-synch is on point, the lines are smooth.. meaning the skills are definitely there. When the characters are off model in animation they are usually off model in ways that go beyond proportions. When everything else is professional and only the proportions are messed up it tells me it's intentional, not a mistake, just artists following directions. So I disagree when she says the characters have been drawn 'terrible' they literally are the same except when it comes to the head/body ratio, which is obviously a choice on Sugar's part.. I'm not saying it's a valid choice, I think it's confusing, but the artists are not to blame in my opinion ^^
@@carliteaux In this sense it is quite plausible this is the case. I haven't watched the show so I can't say for sure if these constant changes look deliberate or just haphazard. It would largely be Sugar's fault if that is the case. And it does sound like it would be very confusing. Though at the same time if the artists work closely with her and she is entirely to blame surely the artists would be critiquing this choice wouldn't they? Since artistic teams generally do work closely with each other (though the actual animators probably aren't close to the storyboarders). EDIT: I mean a lack of internal critique is the reason the Star Wars prequels were so bad.
@@kodey1m Oh right well if you haven't watched the show your critique is damned biased. Same goes for everyone who's only watching still frames of any cartoon depicting its flaws without having watched the piece (even the big studios mess up royally i.e bloody Elsa with the hair that goes through her limbs and defies physics). Now, some people who watch the show like myself, still find it confusing, but obviously the show is doing so well therefore most people don't find it confusing at all. Some might even think it's interesting and bold, or even simply but a detail (which in fact more often than not goes unnoticed)
I feel like Steven Universe could have really benefitted from a Kill la Kill-esque style, but sadly we’re stuck with this terrible animation quality that, frankly, makes the show difficult to watch
Steven Universe is wonderful, i really dont care the animation quality, have a great history and plot twists, im talking about ''Change your Mind'' too
For me personally, in terms of the storyline it's fine but I fucking hate the animations. It's done inconsistenly especially with the unruly character sizes changing each time throughout each episode. Oh God, they don't even follow the character models.
I’m late to the party, but to be fair, 3:36 those aren’t storyboards, those are layouts. It’s true that animators copy what they see, but it is also an animators job to keep the characters consistently on model. If you look at some storyboards for other shows, they can look like shit all they want, it’s a matter of the *artistic direction* and references they receive. I’m not here to defend the show, believe me, it looks like trash, but, yeah.
I’m a SU fan and some of the art inconsistencies bug me. I don’t even care for the art style of SU, but I adore the character’s designs and the plot. I agree completely about all of your points.
I have never been on your channel before, but shall admit that your objective criticism is necessary for any aspiring animator to pay close attention to the consistency of their work. Thank you! 👍👍👍
Yeah having a style is great and all but when it's done poorly with minimal effort, then that's the issue. The whole arguments for this is just wanting to promote lazy ideas and technique for the sake of having it out. In the wise words of shigeru miyamoto - "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."
I do think this style of animation can work, but only if you know what the hell you're doing. Ren and Stimpy did the whole "artistic freedom" thing, but it worked because the people working on it were talented veterans (well, talented veterans and animation's answer to Jared Fogle, but that's neither here nor there), to say nothing of the work put into both the storyboards and even the layouts (the latter concept appears especially foreign in a lot of today's cartoons). The problem with SU is that the artists seem to think that whatever slapdash doodle they come up with will work as a finished product. I don't know whether it's because of laziness or inexperience, but either way it proves that in the wrong hands the style is, in your words, a recipe for disaster.
I actually think this is SVA’s fault. I’ve taken SVA’s animation courses, and I was taught that “the motion is all that matters” and it “doesn’t matter if it’s off model or the anatomy is off.” And I was like, “I think it does!” Yeah it’s definitely SVA. Rebecca sugar has been brainwashed by them.

Its not really a problem to me i just find it funny, but I agree that she should work on it
@gorkamorka zorgamorga Peridot Is Pretty Great.
It happened the same with Connie, in the first episodes, she was very, *VERY* taller than Steven, but by some reason, she became to get smaller and smaller at the point to look like a 5 years old girl (I know this may happened because Steven was growning up, but damn, the small height of Connie was very exaggerated)
And yes, I think the same with Peridot, she was very tall, but when she was stripped of her armor, she was in a decent height, but whit every episode she was getting smaller and smaller.
Honestly, I think that Rebecca Sugar has a lot of mistakes in the animation, such as bad proportionality.
Peridot is just a fucking gremlin at this point
How do you even criticize art? Do you just say that the most popular opinion is the correct one? Do you compare it to whatever came first or some other arbitrary standard?

in Change Your Mind (the most recent episode of SU), i couldn't stop watching the scene where the two stevens fuse to create normal steven, because they brought in a former animator from the Disney renaissance era (James Baxter) to animate it. It was just so fluid and amazingly done, i spent almost 20 minuets watching it over and over and just admiring it. This was the type of animation the show really needed.

Blake the Dweeb Yeah, it’s really annoying. I mean, I like that she lets the storyboard artists draw them in their style, but keep the dang consistencies
Honestly, there is *so* much time in between episode being released, I didn't even notice the inconcistencies at first
I hate it how every shot is just shot reverse-shot like inconsistency in sizes are for the most part, at least for me, something I don't immediately notice but once you notice the shot reverse shot expecelly in songs like 'it's over isn't it' where the set up for good shots is there to evoke emotion and the only emotion you get is from the voices it's painful
When I saw that insane animation from Battle of Heart and Mind I thought 'Holy shit they actually tried new angles AND ANIMATION.'

You guys remember Chowder? It’s hilariously off model every now and then because it’s meant too.
Sometimes they make Endive bigger than she needs to be to emphasize how huge she is, same goes for most of the characters when they emphasize one aspect of the character.
Too bad this show sucks at that
Same with Ira Gamagori from Kill la Kill, it's hillarious sometimes how they blow his size out of proportion to emphasize that he's a giant of a character.
That was done on purpose though.
But there's a difference between the two. Where with Chowder it's a choice and adds to the overall feel of a scene (not to mention compliments the style of the cartoon writing wise), with SU it's just genuine laziness and lack of care for a show.

From afar, this show looks amazing.
@the hevy mmm, no, it is'nt

Theres actual passion in one
Keoh 8 not really, it’s a critique, listing the flaws that their methods have caused and acknowledging the quality of the work as a result
Keoh 8 That really depends on how the critique is delivered, and how you perceive criticism
Some people tend to mix in insults with their critiques, and others are more hyperbolic for the sake of entertainment
But generally most people don’t take criticism very well because they don’t like to think they’re doing anything wrong

It would mainly be a homage to all the errors in transformers G1 and how terrible/funny they are
Well, if it is a comedy section of the episode, it could work. But if it a serious section then maybe it would look just silly and very outplace.

They just draw them however because who cares. That’s unprofessional. It’s not like that’s even budget constraint or style choice.
I honestly don’t really care about the inconsistencies. It doesn’t distract me from the plot. But I agree about it being unprofessional.

Saying it's a stylistic choice is the equivilent of someone saying "ITS MY STYLE" when criticizing anything in someones art
characters should only go off model for a visual joke other wise they should be consistent

If I sounded rude I apologise but I will not retrive my words, in the animation world, to unappreciate the work of an animator is so common that people overworks them a lot to pay them a misery.
So please, for the actual show tell Rebecca Sugar to use the budget well and pay animators decently at least.

i absolutely LOVE SU, but i have to agree. its very distracting at times.
@Wow Wow Wubbzy ._.

Although it was due to an experienced story-board being hired.

the fact that anime rn is way more professionally animated than shows here is kinda hilarious bc anime typically dont have a giant budget(the whole reason they do the "cheek mouth" thing is that for some studios it's way too costly to try to animate normal mouths, not a style choice)
and SU is said to have like $1,000,000 in the budget lol
yes, there are some beautifully drawn anime with decent animation, but you can't pretend that anime as a whole is doing great. just like in western cartoons style, we have accept mediocrity with plot and characters. you could put aside some anime and be like "but look! this has great characters and style!" (boku no hero, cells at work, your name), but we have to admit to ourselves that anime has become horribly oversaturated.
with that said, western animation ain't doing so hot. we have a few good ones, like over the garden wall, bojack horseman, infinity train, samurai jack, and it goes on. all of those with unique and pretty decent styles, but they're not as polished. they are, however, a lot less cliche than a lot of popular anime in terms of character tropes and the scenarios.
either way, we're kind of at an impasse.
You're incorrect, the average anime budget is higher than the average Western cartoon budget.
Being a Steven Universe fan
I actually agree
"I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed."
Excruciating words to hear. Lol
*gets the megaphone*
Its cringy at best
Look at it.

Funny , an hour ago i was like "Miss Zizi hasnt uploaded nothing in months " and then this pops up, cool.
I try not to let it bother me too much bc 1) I know next to nothing about animation and 2) I enjoy su for the story (even though that has it's issues as well), but even as a casual fan, the animation errors are unfortunately very noticeable.
as a huge steven universe fan,,, i completely agree with you lmaooo i love the show so much but oh geez the inconsistencies
Yeah, one of the biggest problems with the show is its immense lack of focus.
Its fantasy
In SU
Every single thing is in a fuked up shape and become taller smaller fatter thiner or even different
That face in the thumbnail killed me
The only SU styled show that I like is gumball. but still, Almost every character is in a different style.
Oak synia same.but i also like Gravity Falls and the first few seasons of SVSTFOE if that counts
It works out well for Gumball since it's a comedy show and having every character in a different style (Paper, 3D, pixelated etc.) is an interesting and unique choice for a cartoon and considering all the weird stuff in Gumball and the fact that it's being called Amazing
But for Steven Universe it just makes everything look worse. It's supposed to be a serious, deep and refreshing cartoon yet they make it look like a comedy. It's fine if it's both comedy and a deep show but changing the character looks every two scenes just makes it look a bit lazy. I'm not saying that the people who worked on it are lazy, i'm just saying it LOOKS LIKE it's lazy and that they haven't tried to keep the characters' looks as they are
If they want it to be both comedy and a serious show maybe they could add some fun jokes from time to time or make the characters chibby in a certain scene where it's needed, like in some other shows (Can't give examples but i'm sure i have seen it somewhere else) but to not change the looks every five seconds and just to keep the characters as they are most of the time
But that's just my opinion
_Sponchi_ i agree 100%

Great video!

When she said "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed." I really felt that
Yeah having a style is great and all but when it's done poorly with minimal effort, then that's the issue.
I’ve taken SVA’s animation courses, and I was taught that “the motion is all that matters” and it “doesn’t matter if it’s off model or the anatomy is off.” And I was like, “I think it does!”
Yeah it’s definitely SVA. Rebecca sugar has been brainwashed by them.
